Description

"This is the most up to date, reliable source of information I've seen in any form for up-and-coming bands " - Ross Robinson (A&R for I Am Recordings - Slipknot, The Cure, Glassjaw; Producer - At The Drive In, Korn, Deftones) "This is a must-read for anyone marketing themselves in this new age of media. Jesse has one of the most diverse ranges of real-life, do-it-yourself music industry experience I've ever seen. - Benjamin Weinman (Guitarist, Songwriter, Manager for The Dillinger Escape Plan) "If you had to go with just one book on DIY music biz, this would be the one." - Clyde Smith (Hypebot.com) "Astonishingly packed... $10 well spent indeedy" - Adrian Fusiarski (Buzzsonic.com) Adapted from our popular music business blog,xa0Musformation, Get More Fans: The DIY Guide To The Music Business , gives a complete answer to a question musicians ask us everyday, "What should I be doing to build a fanbase?" While many books have given insight to this answer, none has given as extensive an answer to the techniques, resources and methods to build a fanbase from day one for a group. With no stone left unturned, the book goes step-by-step through every bit of the process of building a fanbase and what we have done when working with groups who built themselves a music career they can make a living from. I wrote this book so my friends would have an answer to the questions of how to build a fanbase and I am happy to be able to share it with everyone.

Features & Highlights

  • How Do I Promote My Music On A Small Budget? How Do I Get My YouTube Videos to Spread? How Do I Turn Casual Fans Into One's Who Buy From Me? How Do I Get On Huge Spotify Playlists? How Do I Increase Turnout At Shows? How Do I Make Fans Using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram And SoundCloud? With every day that passes, the power the major labels once had dies a little more. The chance to get the same exposure as your favorite musicians gets easier and easier. The hurdles that would only allow you to get popular, if the right people said your music was good enough, are gone. You can now get exposed to thousands of potential fans without investing 1% of what musicians used to by building a fanbase based on listeners love for your music. No more writing letters hoping that A&R writes you back. This book explains how you do it. While many books will tell you obvious information, legal mumbo-jumbo and marketing catchphrases that don't help you get more fans. Our experience working with real bands - from upstarts like Man Overboard and Transit to legends like The Cure, The Misfits and Animal Collective, has led us to understand the insider tricks and ideas that go into some of the most important groups of our time. We produce records, do licensing deals, negotiate record contracts and get the musicians we work with written about on websites like Pitchfork and Vice. We have worked with bands who started off as nothing and became something. Unlike any other book written on the subject we have compiled the knowledge no one else has been willing to print in fear of obsoleting their own career. We give you thousands of ideas on how to get people to hear your music and turn them into fans who pay to support your music. Whether you are a label owner, musician, manager, booking agent or publicist there is information in this book that will help you do what you do better. Enjoy! An incredibly detailed and comprehensive book written by someone who not only has serious music business expertise but developed his marketing expertise working with major corperate clients (a PLUS in this context--Jesse is not a pretender).

An invaluable resource

No book could be more thorough, knowledgable, or passionate on the subject of DIY band survival and success in the current overwhelming, post-retail, file-sharing underground. An applicable and invaluable resource for bands and artists of any genre who want to thrive on their own terms.

Every conceivable angle and approach a smaller band can use to gain exposure and profit while holding onto personal ethics is examined in detail by Cannon (culling from his own 20 years of experience traversing the ever-changing punk underground; recording and working with and in bands) with an insider, no-BS frankness and sense of inspired motivation that only a true lifelong fan of music and band-culture could provide.

A book as useful to any band as amps, instruments and a van.

Easily the best.

Having read several books, consumed heaps of articles and podcasts, and even purchased an expensive video-based online course on the DIY music industry, this is easily the best, most to-the-point and complete resource.

One small complaint I have is that certain websites listed as resources in the 2016 edition were gone…long before 2016. That includes the author's own website which he refers to frequently. So I don't know how carefully each edition is being updated. What I now recommend to every musician I know is: (1) buy the newest edition available of this book, and (2) sign up at indpreneur.io.

I recommend this book because of how thorough and common-sense it is on all the little details of the industry, and I recommend indepreneur for in-depth, continually-up-to-date advice on marketing your music online.

Must Read For Anyone in a Band

This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to play music in a serious capacity. It reads as a blueprint and timeline for how to achieve your goals. Whenever I'm stuck between a decision or feel that my band is in danger of stagnating I consult this book. The really great thing about "Get More Fans" however is that it gives you ideas you never would have thought of. The examples given in this book often serve as a jumping off point for your creativity to work from, The business advice in this book is universally sound and many of the tactics for marketing and networking can be applied to any area of your life and business outside of music. Overall, it's up to you to sail the ship but this book can serve as a map so you can avoid the pitfalls so many musicians fall into, and steer into the right course for your music.

You know what would suck? It would suck if you made my favorite album and I never got to hear it because you had no idea how to reach your audience. Don't get this book for you - get it for me so I don't miss out on the best album I never heard.

By far the best book for every band/manager to own! This is your bible.

Get More Fans is an incredible resource I constantly turn to for an educated view point to just about every facet in the music industry. I've been working in music for about 15 years now and I learned a ton of new tricks and tips from Jesse's writing. I recommend this book as the music industry bible to all bands that reach out asking for any advice. Don't sleep on this as it's worth every penny.

Best Music Business book out there today!

I've read many books about the music business during my years studying Music Business Management, pursuing an MBA, and working in the industry both on the business side and as a musician. Most books on the music industry are either too heavily focused on a specific aspect of the industry (legal, licensing, management etc) or don't say anything new (and/or contain completely outdated/irrelevant/incorrect info). "Get More Fans" offers the best advise to bands I've ever heard. While most readers will probably skip around the book a lot, I found myself reading it straight through from cover to cover. In today's music business, bands are empowered to do a lot of the legwork themselves. This book provides an excellent road map for bands that are willing to put in the work to become successful.
