Description

"A diagnostic study of Giuliani’s auto-destruct apparatus is probably beyond the capabilities of psychiatric case study. . . . [Kirtzman] possesses the salient advantage of having covered Giuliani close up for decades, witnessing his evolution from an Eliot Ness crimebuster to the Sheriff of Rottingham. . . . . . . . .Whatxa0this biography conveys is that Rudy’s breaking bad wasn’t a sudden turn to the dark side. The hairline cracks in his moral and behavioural make-up were there from the outset." -- James Wolcott ― The London Review of Books “Cuts through the myth and caricature that has too often defined Giuliani. . . . As a former television reporter for NY1, Kirtzman knows the man better than the pundits who have often scratched their heads about the Giuliani they thought they knew. . . . If Giuliani’s story is a tragedy, Kirtzman argues that it’s self-inflicted through a combination of alcohol, sanctimony and a bottomless need for attention.” -- Chris Megerian ― Los Angeles Times “Masterful and engrossing. . . . Capture[s] what made the man tick and what led to his fall from grace. Kirtzman’s critique is leavened with bittersweet impressions and references to Giuliani’s accomplishments.” -- Lloyd Green ― The Guardian "A lively new biography explores how the man once celebrated as 'America’s mayor'xa0fell into disgrace." -- Louis Menand ― The New Yorker "The same 'fanatical sense of righteousness'xa0that propelled Rudy Giuliani’s rise set him on the road to ruin, according to this richly detailed biography. . . . Axa0comprehensive and alarming portrait of Giuliani’s downfall."xa0 ― Publishers Weekly "With a cinematic made-for-TV sense of scene and pacing, gossipy insider revelations, and sharp analysis, Kirtzman vibrantly depicts the sad and tawdry unraveling of Giuliani’s reputation." ― Booklist (starred review) "A veteran political reporter ventures an answer to the question so many have asked in recent years about Rudy Giuliani: 'What happened?'. . . .xa0A sad tale, expertly told, of corruption, bad judgment, avarice, and treason." ― Kirkus Reviews (starred review) Andrew Kirtzman has covered Rudy Giuliani for three decades as a political reporter for print and television. He began as a City Hall reporter and then wrote what is considered a definitive book about Giuliani’s mayoralty. He was with Giuliani on the morning of September 11th and chronicled their experience together. He has covered more than a dozen national political campaigns and hosted two of New York’s most widely watched political shows, winning multiple Emmy Awards. He has written for The New York Times , The Washington Post , Thexa0New Republic , and other publications, and authored a book about the Bernie Madoff scandal. He appears regularly on CNN and MSNBC to discuss politics and government.

  • Rudy Giuliani was hailed after 9/11 as “America’s Mayor,” a national hero who, at the time, was more widely admired than the pope. He was brilliant, accomplished—and complicated. He conflated politics with morality, made reckless personal choices, and engaged in self-destructive behavior. A series of disastrous decisions and cynical compromises, coupled with his need for power, money, and attention gradually ruined his reputation, cost him political support, and ultimately damaged the country. Kirtzman, who was with Giuliani at the World Trade Center on 9/11, conducted hundreds of interviews to give us an insightful portrait of this polarizing figure from the beginning of his rise to his high-profile role as Donald Trump’s personal lawyer. Giuliani was a celebrated prosecutor, a transformative New York City mayor, and a contender for the presidency. But by the end of the Trump presidency, he was reviled and ridiculed after a series of embarrassing errors and misjudgments. He was a significant figure in both of Trump’s impeachments and ended up widely ostracized, facing both legal jeopardy and financial ruin. This is the “lively new biography” (
  • The New Yorker
  • ) of how it all began and how it came crashing down.

As John Oliver said, "he's always been this way"

Like may people who are probably interested in reading this book, I initially thought author Andrew Kirtzman made a bit of a mistake with the subtitle of his book. I mean Rudy Giuliani has undoubtably rose and fell, but I was skeptical of the word "tragic" being included what-so-ever.

However, by the time I had gotten to the end of the book, I guess I did feel a tinge of sadness for Giuliani - even though I honestly didn't want to. I don't know if it is so much the story of this fallen icon that triggered sympathy in me or if it was just the accessibility and life imbued in Kirtzman's prose. There were parts that made me think about Giuliani and Trump's curious "dynamic" in a new light (it's pretty interesting why those two have been stuck together like glue) and well, when you get to the parts about Rudy's outright poisonous vendetta to take down Biden, it's difficult to not to wince when witnessing a person becoming utterly consumed by their obsessive hatred. It's that last part I think anyone reading this book can relate to. We've all been mad at another person, but if you're tripping over yourself (to an embarrassing degree) to get back at them to the point that you're essentially chasing down/creating boogiemen, YOU may have a problem that's bigger than your problem with them - even if it is real and nit just perceived.

But in the end, I think John Oliver said it best on his episode that contained a piece centered on Giuliani - "he's always been this way." Indeed. The only difference now there's a lack of guardrails. And if you think that a person like Giuliani would care about the legacy he will leave behind, the answer to that may surprise you.

Disappointing Bio

If you are a political junkie like myself you will find this bio of Rudy Giuliani a disappointment. I would have loved a more detailed description of Rudy's three mayoral runs in 1989, 1993 and 1997. Did you know that Rudy was the nominee of the Liberal party in his three runs, while the Conservative party refused to endorse him. What was the deal there? Kirzman just spends a few paragraphs on those campaigns. Also there are a few accusations of racism which are just thrown out there with no examples to back them up. When Kirtzman writes of Al Sharpton that whether he is a civil rights champion or a racial asonist depends on who you speak to oh c'mon. Rudy was a great mayor. Crime plunged under his administration and his economic policies revived a moribund city. Yes his behavior changed drastically once he left office and he has no one else to blame for his current predicament.

Excellent Read

I am a native New Yorker who recalls the years Rudy Giuliani was mayor. This book shows the reader what a disaster he was before becoming mayor …during the years as mayor and after. His fall from the heights of popularity right after 9/11 to a pathetic person he is today.

Excellent!

Extremely well-written. In fact, it reads like a novel. What a sad, sad man.

Engrossing tale of a tragic downfall.

I have been a follower and fan of Andrew Kirtzman and his husband Kyle for decades and I knew that if someone could write the definitive book on what happened to Rudy, it would be him. The Mayor is no longer the person I worked for and enjoyed a cordial relationship with. It is an engrossing look at what happens when thirst for despotic power, mental illness and alcholo can do to a once functioning human. I am also glad that Andrew spent time to discuss the story that mainstream media avoids. That is Rudy's financial support and harboring of a pedophile priest. I highly recommend this book.

This is the best book out there about Rudy Giuliani. It shows how power and the pursuits of the good life take a man from the top to the bottom. This book is very well written and an easy read.

Good insight into Rudy’s motivation and behavior.

How does someone go from being successful and respected to a complete fool? This read does a good job explaining that journey.
