RECOMMEND WITH ONE WORD OF CAUTION

RECOMMEND WITH ONE WORD OF CAUTION: Like this book very much. Empowering for my 7 year-old daughter and probably healthy for my 6 year-old. I can literally see their viewpoint opening up with the wheels turning behind their eyes when I read these short biographies about women that have impacted the course of "HIS"story more than credit is probably typically given. But one work of caution...at the risk of being ostracized as a bigot in today's world of LGBT acceptance.....which I am usually on board with 100%, there is one biography on a young child that chose to undergo gender transformation that - quite frankly - made me uncomfortable reading to my same-aged daughter and son amidst the Amelia Earharts, Helen Kellers, Cleopatras, and Marie Curies of history. I also believe it is important to not contribute to disenfranchising groups of people for traits that may differ from your own, but I was surprised to discover how disappointed I was with this particular page in this particular book. Sounds to me like a populist appeal to be the most liberal voice in the room. Not a kids book element of feminine heroism that belongs alongside Queen Elizabeth.

Now feel free to eviscerate me for perhaps thinking differently from you...call me a bigot...I don't mind. The kids I'm telling you about were baptized by a homosexual pastor, and I'm comfortable with a number other examples and - more importantly - knowledge of my own principles to be comfortable making this post despite what might be considered its non-politically-correct sentiments. I just think the next parent that buys this book should be informed all that it contains. Overall, though, a well-written work about strong, historically-accomplished women.

... bought this for my 4 year old and it's perfect! Short

I bought this for my 4 year old and it's perfect! Short, one page stories of kick butt women that reinforces to my child she can do anything! There are even stories about young girls, which was an added bonus because she saw the picture and asked me to read the story about the girl who is 'just like me'! I love anything that gives my child more confidence and shows her that the sky is the limit!!!

Story of Transgender child

PARENTS/GUARDIAN BEWARE!
I just wrote this to the publisher.

I bought this book for my 8 year old granddaughter. No where in any of your (or where your book is being sold) is the mention of a story about a transgender child. As I support the LGBTQ community, I do not support a book that is recommended for a child of 5, 6, or 7 to introduce this unless the parent/guardian is fully aware. This subject, like sexual intercourse or how one gets pregnant needs to be left up to the parent/guardian of the child. My eight year old read this to my 6 year old granddaughter. This is extremely confusing to them as they are not ready for this information. I strongly suggest that the story of Coy be brought to the buyer’s attention before it causes emotional confusion to a child. I am terribly disappointed in this.

Poor quality writing and fluff in content.

The goal of this book was very noble and important. But, it just fails when it gets to content. The stories are so short and poorly written that they are not even a survey of the different women included in the stories.

There are much better books written for girls. This book was more about politics and one would think after raising almost a million dollars from donations, they would be embarrassed to charge 35 dollars for this book.

The bright spot in this book, the artwork was very good. Had the writing been up to that level of quality, this would be a real winner

Mostly great

This book, in theory is great. For the most part I am excited to read it to my 5 year old daughter. I wasn't really expecting to have to explain gender reassignment surgery at this point in her life, so I am glad I read ahead and can skip that particular story. These are simple very short stories that read on a preschool level, so I would expect the content to be that as well. Any young reader would probably be happier with stories that were more in-depth.

Wonderful Inspiration Book for Everyone!

I bought this book for my almost-6 year-old daughter for Christmas and I'm so glad I did. We've already read through many of them, and she seems genuinely enthralled with the stories and interesting images. After one, she whispered almost imperceptibly, "Wow. She's so powerful," and it brought tears to my eyes.

The only reason why I'm docking a star is because the fumes coming off this book are really bad! It smells so bad! After reading it up close for half an hour, the back of my throat felt like it was coated with chemicals. I need to find a way to air it out or something!

Lovely Except for Inappropriate Chapter (and Anti-Israel Bent)

Beautiful book with an excellent message that needs to be conveyed to both boys and girls today...I would highly recommend it, but with two qualifications/critiques:

1 - There is one story about a boy who undergoes a gender reassignment surgery to become a girl. Aside from being a bit off-putting to those of us with more traditional beliefs, this is also not exactly age appropriate for the target audience, i.e., children who are being read bedtime stories. The judgment of the authors in including this story is highly questionable.

2 - There is a noteworthy preponderance of Muslim and Arab women and an equally noteworthy absence of any mention of the State of Israel. This is despite the fact that Israel, although located in the Middle East, was led by one of the greatest female Prime Ministers in history, Golda Meir, among many other female political luminaries. The introduction to the book explains that it was "crowdfunded" to the tune of over one million dollars from supporters in over seventy countries. It is difficult to escape the conclusion that fear of political backlash, actual political pressure, and/or outright anti-Israel bias of the authors inspired their decision to omit any Israeli names from an otherwise wonderful and diverse volume.

In summary, this book is outstanding and worth adding to your library. However, its political and ideological biases are so starkly obvious that they can be disconcerting and cause discomfort in those of us who are more moderate in our views. I hope future books of this nature seek to represent a more balanced perspective.
