Features & Highlights

  • A century after his death, Viennese artist Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) still startles with his unabashed eroticism, dazzling surfaces, and artistic experimentation. In this neat, dependable monograph, we gather all of Klimt's major works alongside authoritative art historical commentary and privileged archival material from Klimt’s own archive to trace the evolution of his astonishing oeuvre.
  • With top-quality illustration, including new photography of the celebrated Stoclet Frieze, the book follows Klimt through his prominent role in the Secessionist movement of 1897, his candid rendering of the female body, and his lustrous “golden phase” when gold leaf brought a shimmering tone and texture to such beloved works as The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, also known as The Woman in Gold.

Needs A Simple, Definitive Listing Of Page(s) On Which Finished Artwork Is Visually Reproduced

Book has been organized into 7 Sections, whose subject-matter is identified only by the often vague title assigned to the Section. Artwork, including any applicable discussions, is often replicated in more than one Section. Though there is an index, identifying where a particular work of art is located, it is often confusing due to how the index is constructed. For example, it "lumps together" paintings and friezes, but lists completed & titled drawings separately; it further includes any & all references, with no distinction between the visual vs narrative. What is missing, in other words, is a simple listing of titled, finished artwork and the (single) page number on which it's visual representation is contained. As for the visual quality of the artwork, it is compellingly immersive.
