Don’t order the paperback

It’s A great book, any book by Raina Telgemeier is a great book in my (I’m a teacher, and Raina is one of the students’ favorites) opinion. However, very disappointed in the way I received it. It is a paperback, and was shipped in an envelope. Look on the spine and you can see where the book was bent before I even opened it or started reading it. I know it’s a paperback book, but it should come looking at least like a book not like damaged property already. Very disappointed.

My honest opinion

I feel like the author demonized the black girl in this book. In the "true" story of Raina's 5th grade life this black child bullies her to no end, producing anxiety and the eventual need for a therapist. This characterization of the only significant black girl in the book reinforces racial stereotypes to a young and impressionable age group. I think the author could have used her poetic licence to do the responsible thing. But she chose to do the opposite. My child tells me the author and the bully become friends at the end. But for me, it's too late; the damage has been done.

My 10 year old daughter devoured the book in 1 sitting

My daughter (age 10) saw the book on her bed and devoured it in no time. Relatable characters and relevant story lines. I'm looking forward to reading it when she's done with it so we can talk about it. Thank you Raina for this wonderful mother-daughter binding opportunity - absolutely priceless!

Daughter loves!

Daughter loves these books! My girl is 9 and began reading these last year, third grade. I love these books because they opened her to the world of reading in her own. She struggled with reading for a bit although she always loved books. With these she will sit and read..and finish in a day or two! But she re-read them and is also into reading other books by Raina. So very thankful for this author, hoping this love for reading stays with her.

Period/puberty talk and are you child talking about her parent getting drunk.

Bought this at the school book fair yesterday for my Second grade, seven-year-old who is in advanced reader. It was in a section where there were plenty of rainbow unicorn flippy sequin journals, so I thought it would be a good choice for her. From Carline to bedtime she devoured the book completely. I did not cover but towards the end of the book I walked up and These two pages caught my eye. Now, I recognize everyone is different but my seven-year-old is nowhere near ready to know about a menstrual period or discuss what it means to have a parent getting drunk. I wish there was a rating system on Books like there are on moviesthese two pages caught my eye. Now, I recognize everyone is different but my seven-year-old is nowhere near ready to know about a menstrual period or discuss what it means to have a parent getting drunk. I wish there was a rating system on Books like there are on movies! This is a great book and kept my daughters attention for hours, however I would recommend this for someone who is ready for those two topics!

Highly inappropriate for young girls!

The books for this author are HIGHLY inappropriate for the age group that is targeted. These books discuss topics that are barely appropriate for teenagers, much less you girls in the 8-10 year old range.

If you aren’t ready to have conversations about sex, drinking, drunk parents, being gay, being bisexual, etc with tour young girls, then please refrain from purchasing this smut.

Hated it

Books like these are dumbing down our children. Can't we suggest books that life, inspire, and encourage creativity and higher thinking? Yes, graphic books can be fun and I am sure you think I am overly critical, but do we really need books about puking, farts and pooping - and showing girls (drawn, not photos) on the toilet??????

Don’t surprise parents with the puberty talk!

Suggested age is 8+. Most kids don’t get “the talk” in school until 5th grade. Age 10. My kids have all loved her books and my 9 year old daughter was so excited to get this at her school book fair. She loved this one also and read it the same night. However, she then proceeded to ask me about puberty and periods. Not a conversation I was ready for! Please keep the content age appropriate!

Makes girls look weak

This book is about fear, anxiety, bullying, and early teen drama. The majority of the main characters are in therapy, parents are of little support, bullies are excused from bad behavior. Menstruation is portrayed as something that makes one ill, cramped and moody. It was also poorly written and has no particular literary value. The only good news is that it shows good friendships between girls and there is no boy drama. Unfortunately, boys are also pretty irrelevant in the book.
I can see how it might be useful for someone who lacks empathy or who is coping with anxiety.
