Description

"Children are not the only ones that need to learn how to be truly happy. It's all in the bucket, that invisible bucket that follows you everywhere. . . teaches young readers valuable lessons about giving, sharing, and caring. This guide to daily happiness, though, is not just for kids. We all need reminders of the benefits of positive thinking and positive behavior. It's an important lesson to teach and remind us all . . . that showing kindness and appreciation of others goes a long way to making this world a happier place for everyone, including ourselves. A classic tale, beautifully told and beautifully shared." - Emily-Jane Hills Orford, Readers' Favorite Book Reviews This book was first published in 2006 to teach young children, primarily ages 4-9, how to be bucket fillers. Since then, bucket filling has spread around the world to help millions of people of all ages have happier and more rewarding lives. In this revised and updated edition, the verbs "bucket dipping" and "bullying" have replaced the nouns "bucket dipper" and "bully" to help readers understand that "bucket dipping" and "bullying" are negative behaviors (what we are doing) and not permanent labels (who we are). Readers will also learn that you can fill or dip into your own bucket.I first learned about bucket filling in a seminar for early childhood educators in the 1990s. The speaker, a brain research expert, said it is helpful to think of every person as being born with an invisible bucket. The bucket represents a person's mental and emotional health. You can't see the bucket, but it's there. She said that it is primarily the responsibility of parents and other caregivers to fill a child's bucket. When you hold, caress, nurture, touch, sing, play, and provide loving attention, safety, and care, you fill a child's bucket. Giving that love is filling buckets. In addition to being loved, children must also be taught how to love others. Children who learn how to express kindness and love lead happier lives. When you care about others and show that love by what you say and do, you feel good and you fill your own bucket, too.As you read this book with children, use it as an opportunity to model this concept by filling their buckets. Tell them why they are special to you. Help them imagine whose bucket they might fill and what they could say or do to fill a bucket. Tell them whose bucket you filled that day. Practice with them to become daily bucket fillers. Very quickly they will experience the pride and joy of filling buckets.Learn more about bucket filling through our website, bucketfillers101.com, and be sure to sign up for our free e-newsletter,BUCKET FILLOSOPHY® 101. Keep filling buckets and your bucket will always be full. This heartwarming book encourages positive behavior by using the concept of an invisible bucket to show children how easy and rewarding it is to express kindness, appreciation and love by "filling buckets.Updated and revised, this 10th anniversary edition will help readers better understand that "bucket dipping" is a negative behavior, not a permanent label. It also explains that it's possible to fill or dip into our own buckets. For more information on bucket filling and free downloadables and resources, visit bucketfillers101.com. Features & Highlights

  • While using a simple metaphor of a bucket and a dipper, author Carol McCloud illustrates that when we choose to be kind, we not only fill the buckets of those around us, but also fill our OWN bucket! Conversely, when we choose to say or do mean things, we are dipping into buckets. All day long, we are either filling up or dipping into each other's buckets by what we say and what we do. When you're a bucket filler, you make the world a better place to be! This 32-page picture book is perfect for children, parents, grandparents, teachers and people that want to teach empathy, nurture kindness and create a positive environment in their home, classroom, workplace and community.

I love this book

I love this book. My 6 year old was having issues in school and at home, so I was scanning amazon for reviews on books that might help. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it helped a lot. My son decided he wanted to be a bucket filler instead of a bucket dipper. I'm not saying the book is some kid of miracle fix, but it definitely helped. That's also why I decide to start writing more reviews on products we buy from amazon. I never was big on writing reviews, but realized that's what I looked for before I purchased something. We also bought the coloring book that goes a long with it. It's good for coloring, but your chid really needs to be able to read if they're going to get something out of it. Hope this is helpful.

Downloadable materials online

I'm very impressed by this one. Not often do you find the entire book...in the preview of the ad. The entire book was viewable before purchasing. That actually made me buy it. I really enjoyed the kindness of that act.

As for the book itself, it's very nicely made. It will definently survive my 4 year old reading it alone. He's gentle so if your child is still rough, this may be a parent and them type adventure. The colors and drawings are beautifully executed and there are no errors that I noticed up front.

The concept of the story is awesome. I've heard of this before but I love how it's illustrated for younger children. I disagree with other parents who complained the book didn't explain about "filling your own bucket" because that's something YOU should be going into depth with. This book can't cover EVERYTHING but it opens a GREAT conversation with you and your children. This book gives you key words to work with and they even have additional free printouts available on their website. There are other books in the series that seem like they will be also fun to explore.

I would reccomend this to parents who are trying to teach manners, emotions, and possibly as a tool to explain mean people or sad people.

Great book, easy to understand!

Ever since the purchase of this book and another “filling your bucket” book from the same authors we reference it on a daily basis. We have a VERY strong willed, and independent 4.5 year old. I wasn’t sure how much of the book he would understand but my gosh he does! We talk about filling others buckets in school, family etc. and just this past week he said something to me, stopped and said “is that bucket dipping” (he was saying a few mean things). I said yes, talked about it and he apologized. GASP. My 4.5 year old recognized and apologized for his behavior. Now, that was one instance and we have a long way to go but we are laying a foundation. It’s amazing.

Life lessons made easy!

SUCH A GREAT WAY TO GET YOUR KID TO BE A GOOD PERSON! I'm not even kidding! I read this to my 3 year old son once, and there was a curious/confused look about him. He wanted it read again and asked many questions. From then on, he is ALWAYS talking about filling other people's buckets, filling his bucket, and bucket dipping! It's a great way for me to explain to him when he does something that makes me or someone else feel bad, and also a great way to encourage him to make other people feel good!

The book illustrates (written/pictures) the social rule/"Golden Rule" of treat people how you'd like to be treated (sorry don't

I bought this after buy "How Full Is Your Bucket" for my son who is on the spectrum (ASD). The book illustrates (written/pictures) the social rule/"Golden Rule" of treat people how you'd like to be treated (sorry don't remember the exact quote, but you get the idea), in a simple and concrete style. For my son, this is important. But this book is great for any school age child, for sure!

Helps kids understand how their behavior affects others

My son is 5 and we have been working on understanding how his actions and choices affect others. We've read this book twice in the last 2 days (once each day we've had it!), and initially I didn't think he was that interested in it. He loves books, but this one didn't seem to catch his attention. However, tonight, he had a disagreement with his little sister (she's 2), and was angry. I went to talk to him and asked him what happened. He told me what happened and then said, "She dipped into my bucket." Then he thought about and said, "But I dipped into hers too. We're both bucket dippers." Then we talked about what we can do to be bucket fillers, and discussed things he did today to be a bucket filler. It was a great moment and I think using imaginary buckets to illustrate how our words and actions affect others as well as ourselves is helping him to see and understand how he is connected to others. I also appreciate the fact that the illustrations are diverse and not just a single child and their family. That seems to reinforce the concept that everybody has a bucket.

This book is fantastic - should be required reading in every primary school classroom, and should be on everyone's shelf. What a great way to show how the way we treat others not only affects them, but affects ourselves.

Buy this book!!

A friend recommended this book to us, and I'm so happy we got it. Great lesson! Easy for my kids (3.5 and 5) to understand. They implemented the lessons immediately, helping others and talking about how it makes their friends and themselves feel better. We routinely talk about what they did to be "bucket fillers" each day. This is a fantastic book. I recommend it!

Research shows that Empathy must be taught. Empathy, learning to care about how other people feel and how our actions can affect other people negatively or positively. The BUCKET SYMBOLIZES EACH INDIVIDUALS SOCIAL NEEDS TO FEEL LIKE THEY BELONG. Maslows Heirarchy of needs lists social needs (belongingness) right above the basic survival and physical needs such as shelter; food; clothing; warmth SAFETY etc. When a person has those basic needs met they still need more in order to be able to learn progress and be successful in life. "Belongingness" or 'fitting in' is a big motivator. Learning to fit in in ways that help others to also feel accepted and encouraged. This book and others in her set is loved by children, teachers and families - Empathy for others can promote harmony in just about every relationship and will when each person in the relationship strive to be A BUCKET FILLER! i hope you love it too.
