Features & Highlights

  • Most travel titles are put together in a few weeks by visiting travel writers. Wizard guidebooks take over a year to compile and the writers are residents who personally and anonymously review every facet of the island. Their maps are the best you'll find. From restaurants to helicopter companies to scuba to beaches to trails. They see it all and show you the best the island has to offer. They also reveal who's the worst and who to stay away from. All told in a frank, humorous way that keeps the reading fun.

Totally Worth It

This was probably the best purchase I ever made in connection with traveling. With these tips and
"secrets" we felt like real insiders on the Big Island.

From spot on recommendations of restaurants to out of the way sights to great beaches.... all with tips on how best to get there and what to avoid; we used the book like a bible.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Best Guide for all Hawaiian Islands

This guide tells you like it is. These people actually go and revisit sites. I especially like the restaurant section. So important if you want to experience the culture as many 'local' restaurants are reviewed...not just the ones you can only afford one time during your stay due to high prices. Andrew Doughty does it right!

Excellent reference for finding any venue in the Big Island

Tips for best beaches to see sea turtles and hikes in Volcano. The lei on the post is a tribute to Pele, the goddess of the volcano. Bring water shoes for walking on the lava rock along the beach. Great reference book.

Best guidebook I’ve ever used.

Has everything! Great recommendations for sights, activities, dining, etc. Helpful opinions about what’s must see and what’s skippable. Lots of stories about the island and it’s culture. Plenty for history buffs too.

Can’t go to Hawaii without it.

Over 15 times to Hawaii but still have to get the latest edition of this before I go. There is always something new or updates that I want to know about. Don’t hesitate to buy it.

Great Guide Book / Highly Recommend

We used this book extensively while on Hawaii over the summer.

I found it to be an excellent book, and extraordinarily detailed. We were particularly happy to find a small swimmable beach (cove area) w/ clean facilities, tucked away in a spot we would have never found without the book. I also appreciated the descriptions of areas that had roads that we would prefer to not drive on (steep scary grades, bad conditions, etc).

I could go on and on about the helpful information in the book, but no need to take up the space. It was indispensable for our two week trip. I read it cover to cover, enjoyed the humor of the author, and then referred back to the book constantly during the two weeks we explored the island. Great purchase, would highly recommend to a traveler to the Big Island.

Great informative book

My 3 star review is for the condition of the book, not the content, that part is spectacular. Ordered brand new and came with tears on the spine of the book, everything else in my package was fine, just this one was not.

Good overall, but outdated in many spots

It's hard for a printed book to keep up with reality and that's where this book falls shorts. Beaches that are supposed to be uncrowded are crowded. Restaurant recommendations are hit and miss. Overall, the maps and other parts of the books are good, but this doesn't take into account the massive influx of tourism to Hawaii. Also, the prices for activities and good listed are all wrong. Use google.

Great guide to everything

This is a long but detailed book of the Big Island! I enjoyed reading through it to help my understanding of the island before our visit, although I didn't have time to finish it until we were on the plane above the Pacific. We then brought it with us as we drove around and it helped our decisions about where to go, giving us some good ideas. It's 2022, so we obviously followed some of the ideas up with some basic googling before we headed out on longer adventures, but this was a great start and overall guide to get us started!
