Description

From AudioFile Ed McMahon made his living as Johnny Carson's second banana, bantering with the "Tonight Show" host through 30 years of shows. This book brings no surprises; by now fans are familiar with the shy talk show host who was always "on." Still, with an emphasis on classic "Tonight Show" moments, McMahon's recollections will bring back warm memories for viewers. Brief audio clips from the show remind us that McMahon hasn't got his Johnny voice down pat, but he's an engaging reader with a conversational style--and sharp comic timing as well. There's an extensive photo album on CD-ROM to jog memories about some of the bits McMahon mentions. J.A.S. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Features & Highlights

  • Here's Johnny is like sitting with Ed and Johnny over lunch: The last time I saw Johnny, about a year before he died, we had chicken, a couple of glasses of red wine, and then we just sat there and reminisced, going back and forth the way we did on the show. We talked about our kids, and our careers and the state of America, just two lucky guys who loved each other and the good luck of our careers. Ed McMahon is the only person who was with Johnny Carson, even before The Tonight Show, when they both first appeared on Who Do You Trust. Now, with Johnny's blessing before he died, McMahon can finally share all the stories that only he knows. From the sofa at Johnny's right, to backstage, to their personal relationship - McMahon will provide a real view of the man who was so careful to only show one side of himself to the public. Brilliant in front of the camera, but shy in person, Carson seldom gave interviews. Only McMahon can tell the stories and provide the insights into the personality that made Johnny Carson more of a friend we invited into our home than a television star. This entertaining tribute is read by Ed McMahon and includes a CD-ROM with photographs, many never before published, from both McMahon's and Carson's private archives.

Ed tells an interesting story

This biography tells the story of how Ed Mcmahon met Johnny Carson. This is a biography of Johnny, but also an autobiography of Ed McMahon. Ed tells many things that the audience never knew. Like, many times they would just dialog back and forth and make up things to see how long they could go with it. I bought this biography in audio cd form and listened to it while driving on vacation. The book's story was entertaining and made they drive go by fast.

Ed's Second Go Round

Ed McMahon was Johnny Carson's second banana on the Tonight Show during the years of the late 1960s thru the1990s.

He wrote a book (and did an audio for Time Warner audio) a few years ago called "For Laughing Out Loud : My Life and Good Times ." In this production, Ed recanted his times with Johnny on the Tonight Show.

His second volume, Here's Johnny (three CDs and one cd-rom, three hours, abridged, Oasis Audio) is half retreads and half new material.

However Ed is a natural storyteller, so even these anecdotes sound semi fresh to someone who has not heard them before.

For those who don't remember the classic Carson tonight show, this will all be new to you.

Save your money and pass on this dull book.

If you want to read a rehashing of bits, that don't read as well as live performances, and if you want to read Ed fawning about a 'perfect" Johnny, then this is for you. There is little insight into the real Johnny in this book. The latest memoir “Johnny Carson” by the bombastic Henry Bushkin may be very one-sided, but it is a much more enjoyable read. Save your money and pass on this dull book.

Thank god it was on sale!

A lifelong Carson fan, and lover of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, I was delighted to find a copy of this audio book at Tuesday Mornings for just $3.99! WOW! About 10 minutes into the book, and I knew that $3.99 was just about what this book was worth.

Ed McMahon is no writer - that's quite obvious right off. You'd think that his ghost writer, or editor would have been able to give him some help with this project. He rambled on, and skipped back and forth so much that I often thought I had mixed up the CDs. I agree with all the viewers who mentioned the fact that he offered very little new information. Mostly, it was as though he were just re-telling the various great moments of the Johnny Carson Show as just seen on DVD.

I was fortunate enough to be in the live audience twice and witness Mr Carson in action. He will surely be missed by millions of people for years to come.

Five Stars

Ed was an announcer so the narration is wonderful, and so are the tales .
