Description

"Eddie Lee Sexton is evil incarnate. Like Charles Manson, he exercised a cult-like mind control over others who did his dirty work. But unlike Manson, both Sexton's victims and his subjects were his very own flesh and blood." As strong as they are, these words from an assistant district attorney barely hint at the depravity hidden for years within the Sexton family. Strange notions about "Futuretrons" and hand markings that convey absolute power, revelations of incest and physical abuse, bodies buried in the camping area of a Florida state park-- House of Secrets has so many layers of weirdness that it will amaze even seasoned readers of true crime. Lowell Cauffiel has a talent for combining quotations from interviews and unembellished facts into prose that reads like a novel. Two people are dead, and the children who suffered the cruel fate of being born into the Sexton family may never completely heal from their injuries--but at least their story has been told.

Poorly Written/Increadible Story; Should have been rewritten

This was one of the most interesting stories I've ever read. I was truely dissapointed by the way it was edited. I still don't think I know who is who because they referred to the kids by different names every time you turned around making it extremely hard to follow. I think this could have been a fabulous story had it been professionally written and edited. The only reason I give it three stars and not two is becuase the content was fascinating.

Horrifying, disgusting, fascinating

My husband and I have been looking for a house for several months. We couldn't find much that we liked, and our realtor said there was the cutest house nearby, and she couldn't understand why it wouldn't sell. We thought we'd have a look, even though we'd heard it used to owned by the Sexton family. I had only the haziest memory of the story, and had no objection to looking the house over. We went and saw the place and just fell in love with the house, but the owner(we didn't know who) wouldn't come down on the price. Yesterday, my husband came home with the Massillon Independent with the story of Willie Sexton going to trial. I was fascinated, did some online research, and went out and bought the book. To make a long story less long, I read it in less than a day, and my skin is still crawling. I have read a lot of horror and true crime stories, and this one beats them all by a long shot in creepiness. Maybe it's because I have a personal interest, but I don't think so. It is the best true crime book I have read to date. A Must Read!

A hard to accept reality

I have just finished this book and was unable to put it down. Included in this book are many photos of the Sexton children. They could be the child living right next door. I feel now that I will be more aware of children that seem to be having problems at home and will try to keep the kind of abuse stated in this book from continuing. A must read! Your heart wiil go out to all abused children after reading this.

Good book, poorly written.

This book is very interesting and I enjoyed reading it, but I would agree with other reviews and say that it wasn't written well and the use of all the different names was confusing. I didn't completely catch on to which nicknames belonged to which person till I was towards the end of the book. The part that I disliked most was when the author would use the real name AND the nickname in the same sentence, it was just unnecessary. Other than that I would recommend this book for the content.

very good book

I read this book because a friend recommended. I now recommend it, too. It is very well written and the tells a very sick and twisted tale of a true family. It is sickening to realize what the sexton children endured... and an unfortunate man to marry into the family. This book gives lots of details.

Mesmerizing!

If you are endlessly fascinated by this genre of book, it's a "must read". A truly gripping account of probably one of the most dysfunctional families of all times. You won't be able to put it down, and when you're done reading it, you'll be looking for the publisher's address -- as I did -- to write and ask about how the survivors of the family are doing. For any of them to have turned out even remotely "normal", whatever your definition of that term might include, is extraordinary. READ IT!

What a shocker!

It's horrifying to think that these types crimes are being committed, and that it could be taking place in your very own neighborhood. I could not put this book down, every page added a new detail, and a new twist to this "madness". Cauffiel does a wonderful job of bringing the reader into this highly disfunctional (this is a total understatement)family, making you a part of their "world". This is a must read for any true crime fan.
