Can't recommend this book enough for beginners!!!

This is an OUTSTANDING book! I have never had a green thumb and am an absolute beginner so I after I bought three houseplants, I thought I better do some reading. I have several books now and out of them all, this has been far and away above them all. It gives you the basics... and then a little more so that you understand the why behind it. While I was using another book for the basics, I am now referring to this as my "bible" for keeping my houseplants. I really can't recommend this book enough. I am now excited to have houseplants and think I now have the tools to actually keep them alive!

PACKED with information!!!

I really love this book! Just like there is no such thing as too many plants, there's no such thing as too many resources and this book delivers.

It's not just plant profiles (which I love!) - it's practical advice on how to care for your plant friends. It's a wonderful addition to my library and I recommend it to all plant lovers.

Good, but with some shortcomings

The book is OK, but I wish the pictures of plants were a bit bigger, and showed how it looks in a pot. It’s hard to see what the plant looks like when it’s just a close up of a leaf or a branch, which is the case with many pictures in the book. Also, some popular houseplants are not event covered. Ie, I just bought the UFO plant (pilea peperomioides), and had to search for care tips online.

Best plant book in my library

I bought this book along with a few others, and I wish now I had bought this one first as I would not have purchased the others. It's very thorough, well organized and has amazing photographs that not only help me to identify my plants, their issues and other varieties I may like, but the staging of the photos are so inspiring for home decor. It's hard cover, but light, and packed full of information. My only gripe is the catalog of plants at the beginning of each section has very tiny thumbnail photos, but all one has to do is keep flipping for the larger photos. This book is a good resource for beginners or even very green thumbs. I found the propagation section especially helpful. If you have a love of plants, add this book to your library.

Best I've seen.

I love this book. It is very comprehensive with a section on all of the usual how to's and information about all kinds of house plants. The back half of the book is pictures and profiles of 194 house plants. It is divided into 3 sections with easy, moderately, or challenging to grow. Most plants have complete page of full color photo and description and care. A few are half page shared with another plant. The only complaint I have is one of my pet peeves with books anyway, photos without heading, name or titles. About half dozen times, in the front section of care and how to, the are photos of plants that aren't named and they are not in the individual plant pages. There is one plant I really like and I have searched everywhere (and I am a good internet searcher) and I can't find this particular plant. Authors, don't put in illustrations or pictures without identifying the subject!

This could have been a great book.

This could have been a great book. On the positive side, it features a wide variety of uncommon or formerly popular plants that grow well indoors. The author provides detailed, accurate information for growing these plants.
The big negative is that the photographs of the plants are small and many times misleading. Most photos show only a small portion of the whole plant, such as an extreme close-up of only part of the plant, just the flower, or even just a leaf, which leaves the rest of the plant to the imagination of the uninitiated. The photographer sometimes used a fish-eye lens, further distorting the actual structure of the plant, making identification difficult even for those of us who know the plant well.
Readers should not have to research each plant online or visit the author's blog to obtain a clear and complete photograph.

Very useful information on many indoor plants requiring low to medium light requirements

Great book for care on several different indoor houseplants requiring low to medium light. Also gives advise on how to handle pests that may occur on plants. As well as defining which plants are easy to grow to plants that can be difficult if environment requirements aren't met.
Very informative.

Very helpful book.

I am very happy with this book. It gives quick basic info on most houseplants that you can find at your local store. 1 plant is featured per page and gives a quick rundown on basic requirements of lighting, watering needs, soil preference, growth habits and any special features or important notes. It comes in handy if you want to pot something up quickly and just need to know what soil type and lighting requirements.

Staple plant parent book

This is my go to plant book. Contains the most pertinent info on growth, care, and propagation for common species. I love that the plants are organized into sections by “level of difficulty.” This makes it easy to decide if I have the right living conditions for certain plants.
There’s great and must read info on pests and I find the step by step methods of various ways for propagation very intuitive and better than most books I’ve read. I do wish the photos for each species was larger and more than just a circular snapshot, but other than that, it’s a great go-to.
