  • How to Make Your Money Last
  • , you will learn how to turn your retirement savings into a steady paycheck that will last for life.Today, people worry that they’re going to run out of money in their older age. That won’t happen if you use a few tricks for squeezing higher payments from your assets—from your Social Security account (find the hidden values there), pension (monthly income or lump sum?), home equity (sell and invest the proceeds or take a reverse mortgage?), savings (should you buy a lifetime annuity?), and retirement accounts (how to invest and—critically—how much to withdraw from your savings each year?). The right moves will not only raise the amount you have to spend, they’ll stretch out your money over many more years. You will also learn to look at your savings and investments in a new way. If you stick with super-safe choices the money might not last. You need safe money to help pay the bills in your early retirement years. But to ensure that you’ll still have spending money 10 and 20 years from now, you have to invest for growth, today. Quinn shows you how. At a time when people are living longer, yet retiring with a smaller pot of savings than they’d hoped for, this book will become the essential guide.

How to make you money last is as easy as holding a broad stock index fund and a ...

I have always appreciated JBQuinn's sound, sensible advice on personal finance and her role as consumer watchdog, looking out for the little guy, investor/retiree. This book focuses on the retirement decisions that boomers are faced with. She puts it all together and at age 77 she has lived and is living the decisions, choices and challenges of being retired and aging. No surprise the sections on Social Security and Medicare are clearly written but still complicated, and each of us is in slightly different circumstances. If you have been a "black belt" saver and resisted the slimy sales pitches of variable annuity salesmen and the temptations of high flying loaded stocks and mutual funds; How to make you money last is as easy as holding a broad stock index fund and a intermediate term bond fund and withdrawing 4-4.5% per year and re balancing annually. No silver bullet, magic wealth potion, just common sense, bravo Ms. Quinn. I will reread and use as a reference. If you are young and not thinking about retirement yet, start saving and save, save, save.

Financial information for non-experts

My husband and I just finished a financial review of our next 30 years--the "Golden Years"--in terms of making our money last. This book explains the mysteries of investing, insurance, IRAs and 401(k)s, annuities and other financial products in ways that make sense for non-experts. I will keep it as a guidebook.

Makes sense when reading

A financial advice book that is readable. The author does not go into a lot of esoteric detail but points readers in the right direction to learn more about things that will apply to their specific situation. I have seen books that try to explain every option, but those end up with 80% content that is irrelevant to any one reader.

Best Financial Retirement Book I've Seen.

Just a great book. It can be used either as a primer for someone looking for an overview of retirement planning, or as a reference book on specific topics like mutual funds, annuities, social security, etc. Was recently "downsized" into early retirement and I wore out the financial planning section of our local library. This was hands down the best book of the bunch so I ordered a copy to own. I view this as the first book I would recommend on financial retirement planning. I'll probably order additional copies for my 30-ish year old children; you can't learn this stuff too early!

Good read for the retired among us.

Great book for the retired. Gives insight into the question of Annuities. I liked the section about getting old and having someone you trust to handle your money. Big problem for many in our society with all the crooks around trying to steal from our seniors.

This book if worth having

This is a good book but the reader should confirm the author's recommendations with at least one other source before taking action. I found several things that seemed different than my understanding. Easy and fun to read. Good source for people learning about managing money and also experienced people who think they know it all already! I borrowed it from the library first and gave it a quick read and then decided to buy it for my own library.
