A Great Resource For Writers

I just started writing a crime/mystery novel, and I bought this book to help navigate some of the police procedures I wasn't familiar with. I think this is a good resource for any writer who needs an inside look at how the police work and how investigations progress. It's been very useful so far. If you're going to write a book/series involving the police, and you don't have firsthand or inside knowledge, this book is probably your best bet for learning what you need to know.

had good info but wasnt what I wanted

I am writting a thriller(sort of) and I had a swat team sent to a house but only mu main character whas there. In trying to make my scenes more authentic I purchased this book. If gave me alot of info but didnt answer the questions I had like under what type of circumstances will a swat team be deployed? Is there a specific time when criminals can be processed? I could go off of tv but I am told that prof police officers roll thier eyes at alot of the scenes and I dont want my readers rolling thier eyes at my book so It helped but not really

I couldn't recommend this fantastic book enough

I came across Lee's book while trying to gather some research material for a series of thriller novels I was writing. I downloaded ten samples onto my kindle and Lee's book won hands down. It is a vital resource for any writer out there who delves into police procedure in any way. Lee's chapters are comprehensive and take you through every aspect of police work. I couldn't recommend this fantastic book enough.

Police Procedure and Investigation

I really enjoyed the book. It was an
eye opener to see how the criminal justice system works ( or doesn't
work in some cases ) It is also refreshing to see the difference between reality and Hollywood. I recommend this book for anyone in law enforcement and the criminal justice system.

Slightly out of date but an accurate and useful reference

This book is a must have for writers who need to cover police procedures in their stories but have only experienced these procedures through the eyes of Hollywood. Author Lee Loffland does an excellent job of both presenting the procedure, explaining the hows and whys of it, but also presenting methods to incorporate these procedures in your writing. Loffland takes very mundane and technical processes and places them before the layman in an understandable, and useable, format.

The only issue with this book is that, since technology has changed police procedures dramatically in the past few years, the techniques may be somewhat dated. The principles are still there, but the actual physical process may have changed. Digital fingerprint technology is an example, replacing almost all standard printing techniques. But these shortcomings are not a detriment to the book, just an area where an author may need to do some follow-up research. Which they should be doing anyway.

If you write in crime, mystery, thrillers or even many romance and drama genres, this is a reference work that should be on your bookshelf. Or electronic reader. Technology hasn't just changed police procedures...

A MUST HAVE for Any Crime Writer

I own just about every book in WD's Howdunit series but Lee Lofland's Police Procedure and Investigation is far and away my favorite. This book gives you everything you need to write accurate and detailed scenes involving criminal investigations and so much more. Police Procedure and Investigation is always open on my desk while I write--it's like having a cop on speed dial, no joke! If you want your crime writing to ring true, you need this book.

Solid reference material

A good resource for writing about police procedures from the perspective of an experienced police officer. It is a solid starting point and reference for the basics, especially crime scene investigation, autopsy, and the many rules and procedures that get glossed over in fiction. The e-book itself could use better organization, but the writing was good, and explained for beginners.

Some of it is useful

There are sections of the book that are useful if you are a budding crime writer. The book as a whole is interesting, but not all of the information is relevant to what I'm trying to do. I read somewhere that cops really hate it when writers get it wrong. This books helps with that, but I would have liked a lot more specific information on some subjects.
