Description

Yuki Fumino's first manga, I Hear the Sunspot, received a great deal of attention upon its publication in 2014, quickly leading to the development of a feature film. She is presently working on the third installment in the series. The exceptional talent on display in her debut project has made her one of the most watched and up-coming manga-ka in the BL world.

Features & Highlights

  • Because of a hearing disability, Kohei is often misunderstood and has trouble integrating into life on campus, so he learns to keep his distance. That is until he meets the outspoken and cheerful Taichi. He tells Kohei that his hearing loss is not his fault. Taichi's words cut through Kohei's usual defense mechanisms and open his heart. More than friends, less than lovers, their relationship changes Kohei forever.

Kohei and Taichi.

Magnificent story that talks about the problems that some people with hearing problems can go through, a love story that flourishes when two people meet and the way to new feelings never experienced before. It is definitely a story you must read. The incredible thing is that you can read the first two volumes and stay there, with the present of the characters or you can continue and read the last two volumes and see what has happened to the characters over time.

Beautiful Unique Story

I hear the sunspot immediately sets it apart from other English language romance manga using both its college setting as a unique piece but also a hearing disabled (from a fever in middle school) character with a potentially declining hearing prognosis to its fullest effect. The main characters, while not necessarily new or unique for the genre, do at least avoid the typical bullying or overly popular trait that these characters typically find themselves in, which, in my view, sets it apart from others as well. So, in sum, this is a unique and incredibly intriguing romance manga.

The romance itself is kind of subtle and really at times dwells in the land of one’s interpretation for most of the story until the final few pages. This aspect kind of makes me wonder about what happened during the drafting and development stage especially with the author’s afterward and editor’s conversation, and wondering if she planned for romance to come up a bit later in their relationship or maybe not at all(?), I mean there is clearly a continuation and on one hand one could say everything they faced was just each of them experience what real friendship was all about. Kohei never really had friends before and Taichi seemed to have the type of friends who are just schoolmates or there to do stuff with but not the type to really get that deeply involved in his life. Thus, for both of them, meeting the other and getting so deeply involved with each other and seeing what types of things arise in the situations they found themselves in, as well as the jealous feelings of seeing either spend time with someone else or simply to blow off each other’s messages or harbor their deeper thoughts when the other asked, could drive the emotional outburst and tears they felt in the story.

Overall, loved this manga and hope to see where it goes and how their relationship deepens further. Taichi never gave any sort of reaction to the kiss (assumed kiss?) in the story or even the feelings after their movie date (?) so it remains to be seen what they are, lovers, friendships, just classmates?

I have every book to this collection! Including the newest on on pre-order, it's one of my favorites. I like how realistic the series is in terms of ppl whom are deaf. I would totally recommend this to people in the older teen to young adult audience. I believe there's even a film for this Manga!

Perfect condition for a perfect manga

I love this manga! I was really excited when it was finally released here, so I pre-ordered. It came very quickly and I had no problems with it. Translated well with crisp details on the art. I would include a picture, but I accidentally spilled water on it haha. Will definitely be buying the next volume, "I Hear the Sunspot: Theory of Happiness" !

High quality release

This is a slow burn romance where two college aged men trip all over themselves before even confessing feelings for each other. I'm hearing and abled, but the story seems to handle the main character's hearing loss respectfully and from many angles (including calling out the fetishization of disability based on stories just like this one!)

But I really want to rave about the quality of the localization and physical release from a publisher I haven't purchased anything from before! The translation really flows, with different characters' personalities coming through. The lettering matches the art very well and it looks like care was given to spacing and aesthetic. The physical edition is a good quality of paper, printing and cover considering this is a smaller title! As a collector of physical manga, I will definitely be checking out future releases from this this company, One Peace Books.

I really liked this manga when I read it online because it ...

I really liked this manga when I read it online because it dealt with issues that you normally don't see in manga, and showed how we do somethings that harm others without meaning to and what that can do to a person. If you like a story that deals with diversity and human nature/interactions I would definitely recommend this book to you. If you are looking for a stepping in point for manga I would recommend this book for you. Don't be put off by the fact that it's considered a BL manga, it really focuses more on a growing friendship than anything else. And if that bothers you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .
The only reasons I gave it 3 stars instead of 5 is because some of the drawings are extremely lighter than what was in the original and even in the European releases, which made some parts hard to read. Also, I wish that it was slightly larger (as in the size of the physical book) and a hardcover, but that is simply personal preference.

Horrible! Misprinted!!

What a joke. My daughter has been asking for this book so I went ahead and ordered it from Amazon. It’s printed backwards and upside down on some pages. It’s all out of order, double pages printed and missing a few chapters. What a waste of money, now I’ll have to look elsewhere as I’m not going to go through this again.
