Description

"Susan Conrad writes of the things that make solo sea kayaking challenging, rewarding and life changing. The tides are not always in her favor and the crossings are not all sun drenched and paddled with ease or certainty. At times her fatigue is as palpable as the taste of salt from tears or sea spray or both. When Susan reaches her goal, the reader will understand there is so much more to a solo endeavor than the physical act of paddling 1,100 miles. --Chris Duff, expedition paddler and rower, author, On Celtic Tides and Southern Exposure Susan Marie Conrad grew up on a small farm in upstate New York. By dint of exploring the mountains of Colorado, Oregon, and Montana, she eventually discovered the dynamic and addictive environment of coastal British Columbia and Washington State, where she thrives as an adventure-seeker. Susan is a writer, photographer, personal trainer, kayak instructor, and outdoor enthusiast. She lives with her second-half-of-life partner, along with a ridiculously large dog and two normal-sized cats in Oso, Washington. Learn more at SusanMarieConrad.com

Quite Disappointing, book is solely for kayakers

The author would have benefited from having a co-author. She is not a good writer and thinks that using as many adjectives as she can she is expressing feelings. I didn't want to find out in the middle of the book that she had once been married to Jim, her mentor. Similarly, in the acknowledgments she thanks her life-long friend. There is no indication that she had any friends in her brief summary of her childhood. I recently read a book by a woman who bikes to the Himalayas and at the end had a clear idea of who she was and what motivated her life. Not so with this book. This book will only appeal to those who kayak. I don't cycle or walk long distances anymore, but memoirs by those who do reveal the writer, his/her past, psyche, emotional life. This is a book I would have picked up for ¢50 at our library's resale room if it were open and not finished it. Having paid full price I was compelled to read every word. One is left wondering if she ever contacted her biological siblings. She refers to her family - who were they? How did she end up in Montana? So much of who she was, her motivations, her love for the outdoors has been left out. How did she meet her second half of life partner? A good memoir reveals the person and his/her history. I know as much about Susan Marie Conrad as I do about the new neighbor across the street.

Just ok

Not the greatest adventure book, but an ok read. It reads as more about the author’s motivation, tiredness, and friendships than a description of scenery. Less of a motivation book and more like a poorly written journal. But hooray for doing as a girl at 50. Definitely inspiring for that. More pictures needed too.

A very unique experience

I’m lucky enough to live in Bellingham and Juneau and cannot imagine kayaking the distance Susan did. I could not put the book down, as much as the adventure was incredible, you understand what drives her as she shares her fears and frustrations.
You can’t help to be inspired by her devotion.
I highly recommend this book ! Enjoy!
