I can’t recommend it highly enough for beginning and experienced clinicians alike

It’s remarkable that a textbook for beginning clinicians can so deeply engage, inform, and enlighten seasoned as well as new clinicians. This is no cookbook of techniques or cursory review of clinical approaches. Rather, it rests on a coherent conceptual framework asserting the centrality of the human relationship in every clinical encounter and the critical importance of a clinician’s self-awareness and attentiveness to her own and the client’s context. “Multiculturalism”, that buzz word of the last few decades, informs the authors’ perspectives in a genuine way, woven throughout the book as a powerful dimension of people’s lived experience for both clients and clinicians alike.
This latest edition, the 5th, demonstrates the authors’ commitment to exploring and incorporating the latest findings and topics in the field of mental health practice. Positive psychology, empirically-supported treatments, online counseling, diagnosis and the DSM5, to name a few, are all examined in the light of the core relational, ethical and multicultural principles that undergird the book. The opportunity for continuing self-reflection and practice using exercises and video clips makes for an engaging and lasting learning experience.
I know I will return to sections of this book to recharge my batteries and refresh my awareness. I can’t recommend it highly enough for beginning and experienced clinicians alike.

These authors just keep making this book better and better

These authors just keep making this book better and better. The writing is so clear and to the point (and so not like other text-books) that it practically reads itself. This latest edition has been substantially updated with notable sections and inclusions on neuropsych and positive psychology, two of the juiciest areas in current research. The video accompaniment is updated significantly as well and to excellent effect. The core of this book remains the strongest I've seen in my 30+ years of practice as therapist, clinical, supervisor, and university course instructor. It covers every aspect of the clinical relationship in a way that transmits the authors' deep empathy for both client and clinician. The sample questions and comments presented as possible interventions in a wide range of clinical situations are outstanding and happily include the reasons why they are effective. I have certainly had the experience of reading some of their examples and then tweaking my own clinical language with good results. The two authors are outstanding clinicians themselves as well as skilled communicators and that expertise shines through in every chapter. So much of the material here is of universal application, I would recommend Interviewing In Action in a Multicultural World not only to related college courses where it would be wonderful, but also anyone who does any kind of interviewing for a living.

Received in poor condition

The back page of the book looks like it was cut with a box cutter. Pages in the middle of the book are no longer bound and are actually falling out. The whole book in general is only a few flips away from falling apart the rest of the way. Entire binding of the book is detached from the pages. Almost afraid to use it because it’s literally that fragile.
