Description

"Lavash is an incredibly complete book of foods from Armenia, part cookbook, part coffee-table photo journal, and part history book. The culinary culture of Armenia is ancient, profound, and a doorway to understanding the people and culture of that country--and this book and John Lee's incredible photos truly do justice to this culinary tradition.-- Serj Tankian,xa0poet, visual artist, activist, composer, and lead vocalist for System of a Down "At last, Armenian food gets its due! Lavash takes us on a captivating journey through Armenia, sharing stories of this ancient land's history and people, along with the secrets of its remarkable cuisine. The flatbread recipes alone are worth the price of the book, but there's so much more revealed here--piquant salads, whole-grain porridges, and soothing soups and stews. This eye-opening book belongs on every library shelf and kitchen counter." --Darra Goldstein, Founding Editor of Gastronomica: The Journal of Food and Culture " Lavash is a beautiful love letter to Armenian food--bright, layered, soulful--and its culture and hospitality. Through its words, photographs, and, of course, recipes, Lavash brings a vividness to this special place at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. It's a must read for all lovers of food and travel." --Anna Jones, author of The Modern Cook's Year " Lavash takes readers on a colorful culinary journey to Armenia, past and present. From its investigation into the history of that part of the world to its vivid images and diverse recipes, this book explores what Armenian cuisine looks like today in a very authentic and beautiful way." --Marcus Samuelsson, award-winning chef, restauranteur, and co-owner of Red Rooster Harlem "Much more than simply a cookbook, Lavash is a living portrait of Armenia, its people, and its history, illustrated through its culinary heritage. With each turn of the page, the careful selection of recipes, narrative, and imagery unfolds the country's complexity and beauty." --Halle Butvin, Director of the Cultural Sustainability Program, Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage Ara Zada is a chef, recipe developer, and television personality. I’m so thrilled! My book is here!!

I’m SO excited about this cookbook! The storyline behind each recipe is very well done and really captures what is authentic to the lands of Armenia without surrounding influence! I can’t wait to try preparing some of the recipes in this book! The two that caught my eye that I will be executing this weekend is the Salad Vinaigrette and Panerkhash (like an Armenian macNcheese). I think my guests will love it... also photography in the book nailed it! Well done!! Very happy with this purchase!!

Its a cookbook, I guess

Why is the font so small? Why are there not pictures of every dish? How did they find these alternate spellings for all of the foods?

Its great that there are "wonderful stories", but its supposed to be a cookbook too. I can't read it in any kind of low light.

Not impressed, at all.

Who is giving these 5-star reviews? this is a coffee table book more than a cookbook.

More than just a recipe book.

Haven’t been this excited about a cookbook purchase before. When I discovered “lavash” it was still pending availability to purchase, I preordered and finally got my book today.
First off, it’s a beautiful coffee table or in my case kitchen island book to have. Such an entertainers piece and a conversation starter. I believe everyone in the world should know what lavash is and where it came from. This book gives a beautiful history lesson, well captured photographs and of course priceless Armenian recipes. I can’t wait to start making some of those in my kitchen!

Delicious photos and beautiful recipes!

This cookbook is great! Great layout with lots of amazing full page photos. So many delicious and easy to follow recipes - some familiar ones from my childhood and some new ones that I’m excited to try. I think it really captures the essence of Armenian cuisine and brings it to the modern world. This review is sounding like a fake one, but I assure you that I am real.

A Taste of Armenia

Who couldn’t love a cookbook with a recipe for jingalov hats? This melodious dish and others researched in the bakeries and restaurants of Armenia form the heart of Lavash, a beautifully written and photographed book that gives a rare insight into the food, history and people of Armenia. I found the recipes approachable with steps clearly explained and ingredients accessible in American grocery stores. But this book is much more than its recipes. It is an invitation to meet the people of today’s Armenia in their kitchens and at their tables, sharing the recipes passed down for generations.

What a treat!

I bought this book just looking for other ways to make bread. I was so surprised and honored to find what was enclosed within these pages. This book is like taking a tour. It’s like visiting people who have so much pride in their arts. I never really thought of this part of the world before, but now I am addicted! The cooking is quite different than what I’m used to and although I don’t think I’ll make everything that way, it will definitely find it’s way into my cooking. This is one of the very few books that I will call a treasure. I want to thank you.
