Description

"With skill and deftness she pulls together research in British government archives and elsewhere..." Irish News '...Cadwallader has written a brave, powerful and forensically detailed book...' --Irish Times Anne Cadwallader is an experienced journalist, originally from London. She has worked for the BBC, RTE, The Irish Press, Independent Network News and Reuters, spending a large part of her time reporting from Northern Ireland. She is the author of 'Holy Cross - The Untold Story' (Brehon Press, 2004). In 2009 she gave up journalism to work for The Pat Finucane Centre for Human Rights in Armagh as an investigator and case worker.

Features & Highlights

  • Farmers, shopkeepers, and businessmen were slaughtered in a bloody decade of bombings and shootings in the North Irish counties of Tyrone and Armagh in the 1970s. For years there were claims that loyalists were helped and guided by members of the RUC and Ulster Defence Regiment. But, until now, there was no proof. Drawing on 15 years of research, and using forensic and ballistic information never before published, this book includes official documents showing that the highest in the land knew of the collusion, and names those whose fingers were on the triggers and detonators. It draws on previously unpublished reports written by the PSNI's own Historical Enquiries Team. It also includes heartbreaking interviews with the bereaved families whose lives were shattered by this cold and calculated campaign.

Very informative

Shows how a Government can go to great lengths to cover up its assault on its people. Its a typical British method of brutal suppression of descent.

A compelling read.

The author provides an in depth account of how various agencies of the British government have conspired to conceal the truth of police (RUC) and military involvement in murders and assassinations in Mid-Ulster during the period 1972-78. The author's research and presentation of known facts leaves no doubt as to the involvment of the British police and military in the sectarian violence and the coverup that is now plus 40 years. A must read for students of 'The Troubles'.

Many of those lost their lives in horrible ways. The victims' families have been left without ...

This is a very clear illumination of the facts of the matter around the chronic and tragic ignoring of the constabulary and the British Government of all the murders perpetrated against Irish Catholics in Northern Ireland during the troubles and beyond. Their out-and- complicity in eliminating Unionists and the protection and blindness towards murdering Loyalists and Protestants is also made clear.

The consistent press trick of calling all retaliation by the IRA "Murder" and "terrorism," and calling the murder of innocent Irish Catholics a necessity is sickening to read but certainly a relief after all the years of bland denial and castigation of Irish Catholics and those who either stuck with the wish for a united Ireland or who even refused to participate in choosing sides, Unionists or Loyalists. Many of those lost their lives in horrible ways. The victims' families have been left without any closure or justice until this book! So hooray for Anne Caldwallader for taking the time and care she has to chronicle what actually happened and the collusion of the British government in this whole mess. Super powers should be held accountable for the bullying and manipulation, the outright murder thay have caused and supported. This book will help toward this goal.

I would advise all who seek justice in Northern Ireland to read this book

The focus of the book is the result of extensive research by an English reporter who has become a positive part of the process. I was fortunate to be able to hear her present about the book and hear first hand just how "the troubles" were engineered by the British. A very important part of history of Ireland that should not be ignored.

Must Read

The author has produced a very comprehensive account of the collusion between British security forces and loyalist terrorists mostly in Mid Ulster but also including the Dublin/Monaghan bombings during the 1970's that lead to the murders of numerous innocent Catholics. The book brings much to light in a very detailed way about who did what and naming names as much as possible as many of those involved are know. It shows just how deep rooted the collusion between British forces and loyalist terrorists was and how all this seemed to achieve was more and more death and misery all around and prolong and worsen significantly the conflict. The Irish government is also shown to be very weak doing little despite early on knowing what was happening as not unsettling the British government seemed more important then seeking justice.

Odd how this book makes no mention of Provo-British collusion

Lethal allies? Like Stakeknife? Agent Carrol? Agent Christine? The IRA were/are littered with British collaborators so one does wonder why the author makes no mention of this fact. As a result it's just another of the one sided biased viewpoint we come to expect from the Provo apologist.
