Features & Highlights

  • Life at the Dakota is a deliciously entertaining social history which describes the lives of the rich and trendy who have lived at the Dakota, a New York apartment house daringly erected in 1884, “too far up” and on the wrong side of town.In Stephen Birmingham’s witty chronicle, the atmosphere of this elegant edifice is so powerful that the building itself becomes an unforgettable major character. From its start the Dakota has attracted a lively mix of people, from celebrities Leonard Bernstein, Roberta Flack, and John Lennon, to a ground-floor tenant who kept a stuffed horse in full armor in the living room, and yet another older tenant who was spotted wandering naked through the cellar by some workmen, mistaken for a ghost of the building. While detailing the active and often contentious life within the building from the nineteenth century to the present, Mr. Birmingham also brings to life the New York social scene and that of other fashionable American cities. Just as the sixty-foot rooms, the elaborate moldings and rococo ceilings are lushly described, so is the changing atmosphere in Central Park, the smell and sound of the street below, the judgments about what was fashionable and what was not throughout the years. Here is a window into the marvelous world of The Dakota and through it, the changing view of New York.

This book has't been updated since it was written near the end of the 70s, thus it has nothing in it about John Lennon's murder, surely the most momentous event involving the Dakota.

Don’t Waste your money

Do not waste your money. A bunch of very bad, black and white, fuzzy pictures . The book is so small you cannot even see them well. The blueprints are so small you cannot read the writing.

Not what I expected

I was very excited to get this book and begin reading it, but almost immediately it became clear it was not going to be what was advertised. It was a very detailed historical account of The Dakota with only a few anecdotes, stories or information about the list of famous tenants, like Lauren Bacall, John Lennon, Roberta Flack, Rex Reed, etc. The interesting parts were few and far between, scattered paragraphs buried in the luminous and boring stories that went into painful detail about the disposition of the building itself. Just disappointed.

A real page turner!

This is a wonderfully written book that is an easy read that both edifies and entertains. I have enjoyed myself as I have learned about this fabled address, its builders, occupants, and its transformation throughout the years. It provides a real peek behind the scenes at this exclusive address.

A good interesting read

I loved the book as it took me from inception of the building in pre-central park era to present day. A good read.

Fascinating read Highly recommended

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. What started out as an expansion of my interest in the history of the Dakota where Rosemary's Baby was slightly filmed and John Lennon was killed turned out to be a most fascinating history of New York in the late 1800's and the nouveau riche emergence there. I learned so much about New York City in general and as a country girl it was very enlightening. From there I read "The Address" by Fiona Davis which was excellent. And now on to "Time And Again" by Jack Finney which is a time travel novel from the 80's I believe set in the Dakota. Total Dakota immersion. A fun trip!
