Based at the University of Lincoln, he combines his behavioural and clinical knowledge to offer a referral clinic for animals with behaviour problems, provides consultancy to a range of organisations in the animal care and science industries, and co-ordinates independent trials of potential new products. In addition, he develops his own initiatives that focus on improving behaviour without compromising welfare. He lectures internationally in his field. Peter Baumber is a multi-skilled photographer with specific expertise and experience in the fields of classic motorcycles, portraiture, dogs and cats.

Features & Highlights

  • Every year millions of puppies enter homes, carrying their new family’s expectation of a wonderful relationship. Sadly, many are re-homed or lose their lives as the result of behaviours which their owners find difficult to live with. Helping a puppy to grow into a resilient dog, capable of  coping with the challenges of daily living, whilst retaining a good quality of life and exhibiting behaviours acceptable within society, is not an easy task. This book aims to simplify puppy education by presenting the skills that are required to achieve these goals within the context of everyday life. By enabling owners to incorporate teaching into each interaction they enjoy with their puppy, it not only becomes easier for them, but also enables the puppy to practice appropriate behaviour choices within day-to-day situations. By teaching skills such as self-control, respect for rules, and clear communication, owners can spend less time directing their dog, and more time enjoying their relationship with him, as he takes more control for his own good behaviour. Beautiful, specially-taken photographs illustrate the points made, and each chapter includes a worksheet to help owners chart their puppy's progress.

Wonderful book for anyone with a puppy.

This is a really well-written, well-organized book with some succinct yet really important info. It's a pretty quick read too. Wonderful for new puppy people who may get overwhelmed by the amount of info out there and touches on critical LIFE skills. Not limited to obedience behaviors but true life skills needed to help your pup develop in to a safe and confident adult who relates well to it's human family. I love the focus on relationships as well as the fundamental understanding of how puppies learn covered in this book. It'd make a great text-book for puppy class.

Very handy, good philosophy

This book was recommended to us by a trainer helping us with some issues we were having with a 5mth old pup. The book went along hand in hand with her philosophy in what she was trying to train us as well as what our vet believes. Its simple and straight forward in its layout, easy to understand or use as a reference. It has room for notes or if you want to write down the progress your dog is making/skills accomplished.

Checklists for Training Included

Laying the foundation for a loving, lasting relationship By Helen Zulch and Daniel Mills

When I ordered this book hoping to bring in a new dog, I didn't know its value. The authors' built-in checklists prove their knowledge of canines and canine learning.

Loved that the foreword by Jean Donaldson tells the reader that a dog lover should be concerned with fear in our puppies and dogs. Why? Fear behaviors start with growling, and snarling and then lead to snapping and biting. Too many big dogs lose their lives from biting accidents. We want our puppies to feel confident and free to sometimes say, no.

Repetition.

Kind and patient repetition of skills learning remains key to socializing and training a family dog.

There happen to be many styles and methods of training dogs. Unfortunately, Animal Shelters and the Humane Society report homeless canines as 3.1 million in the U.S.A. Plus, each year in the U.S., 3.9 million dogs are abandoned or given to shelters. Shocking facts.

We dog lovers need to do a much better job socializing and training our best friends.

Great starts for puppies

This book is such a wealth of information about how to raise a healthy, well-adjusted dog. It gives great examples of the skill sets puppies need to learn when they are puppies to avoid the problems that older dogs can exhibit. Following this book would make for a much better adjusted, happier dog.

Superb book for new puppy adopters!

Finally, legitimate, good information to get new puppy owners off on the right foot focusing on what will actually affect how easy your life is with your dog. I just wish the price stayed lower so we could continue to provide it to our puppy adopters at the shelter!
