Description

"Heartbreaking, inspirational, and uplifting, this is an engaging story of one remarkable woman's will to survive." — Library Journal "Utterly compelling, heartbreaking, truthful and yet redemptive, a memoir of the Holocaust, a testimony of irrepressible spirit and an unforgettable family chronicle, written in lucid prose by a truly remarkable woman about her life from Hungary to Auschwitz, Israel to London. I couldn't stop reading it." — Simon Sebag Montefiore “Unforgettable.” — Daily Mail (UK) “Though Lily saw and experienced inhumanity at its lowest ebb, her reaction was not one of bitterness or cynicism, but of hope and compassion. Lily has dedicated her life to sharing her astonishing story so that the world would never again descend into such depths. Yet Lily’s Promise is only half of the battle. It falls to us to heed her words and to internalize and learn from them. This book calls every reader to action. Lily’s message of hope over despair is more necessary today than it has ever been.” — Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis LILY EBERTxa0lives in London near her large and loving family, which includes thirty-five great grandchildren. She is a founding member of the Holocaust Survivors Centre and was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to Holocaust education. Lily’s Promise is her powerful memoir. DOV FORMANxa0is Lily’s great-grandson. At the age of sixteen he was separated from her during the COVID pandemic and became determined to record her story for posterity. He now has over 1.5 million followers on TikTok and received the Points of Light award for services to Holocaust Education.

Features & Highlights

  • INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
  • In this life-affirming intergenerational memoir, Lily Ebert, a Holocaust survivor, and her great-grandson, Dov Forman, come together to share her story—an unforgettable tale of resilience and resistance.
  • On Yom Kippur, 1944, fighting to stay alive as a prisoner in Auschwitz, Lily Ebert made a promise to herself. She would survive the hell she was in and tell the world her story, for everyone who couldn’t. Now, at ninety-eight, this remarkable woman—and TikTok sensation, thanks to the help of her eighteen-year-old great-grandson—fulfills that vow, relaying the details of her harrowing experiences with candor, charm, and an overflowing heart.
  • In these pages, she writes movingly about her happy childhood in Hungary, the death of her mother and two youngest siblings on their arrival at Auschwitz, and her determination to keep her two other sisters safe. She describes the inhumanity of the camp and the small acts of defiance that gave her strength. Lily lost so much, but she built a new life for herself and her family, first in Israel and then in London.
  • Dov knows that it is up to younger people like him to keep Lily’s promise. He and Lily bridge the generation gap to share her experience, reminding us of the joy that accompanies the solemn responsibility of keeping the past—and our stories—alive.

Amazing True Life Story

I saw Lily on TikTok. I have followed her and watched many of her TikTok‘s. In one of them she talked about her book and I went right away and ordered it. It is an amazing story. It is true and it needs to be read so that nothing like this ever happens to anyone ever again. I ordered a copy for my daughter-in-law and my cousin to read as well

Incredible true story of a Holocaust Survivor

In all of my reviews, this is the first time I felt so honored to be entrusted with the memories of a Holocaust survivor. Lily grew up in a happy family environment in Hungary, happy that is until the Holocaust. Along with her great grandson, she narrates her horrific experience at Auschwitz. But more moving to me is how she kept the truth of her experiences so as to protect her family and friends. The book details life after Auschwitz and how she moves on. Eventually, she helps to start the Holocaust Survivors group, to help others process their pain.

She tells the tale of how various people see her tatoo. That made the story all too real to me as I once saw a survivor's tatoo. While I knew that the Holocaust had happened, this symbol made real the tragedy, the loss of life. And I do not consider it a coincidence that I had started reading #Lily'sPromise on #InternationalHolocaustDay. Never, ever forget. God bless you, Lily.

While I was honored to receive an advance copy for review, all opinions are my own.

Heartbreaking

I really enjoyed the book. Lily had so much courage to get herself and two of her sisters through what Hitler and the SS did to all the residents of the concentration camps. She had amazing strength to survive. When I was 18yrs, I had a chance to visit Europe with a college group. We were able to visit Dachau, outside of Munich. It really left a very deep impression on me that people could be so cruel to another human being. The world, now days, almost has that much hate again.

Read it!

I follow Lily and Dov on TikTok and Twitter. I bought the book as soon as it came out in the US. What a lady she is! What an attitude after being through the suffering she endured.
This book does have some bad things but they way she tells the story it's clean enough for you to know her suffering without every gruesome detail (that's left to the imagination) so you can know the horror she and the Jewish people went through but you can stand to read it ... even to a child. She is extremely tactful in her descriptions though I'm not sure how she managed it.
Lily is still kicking at 98 and what a joy she is to see on TikTok. How Blessed Dov is to know his great-grandmother and help tell her story. She is a light in this dark world, a testament to the love of Christ for His people....all the people He came to earth to be a sacrifice for.

Fabulous Read!!!

This book should be required reading for anyone living in this world. As painful and difficult as it is to read, it's equally as powerful and moving. We must never forget what happened to the Jews. The disgrace and horror of these events are a part of the fabric of history, never to be repeated again. I cannot endorse this book enough. Thank you Lily for living up to your promise.

Wow just wow

All I can say is I haven’t had the book for more than 4 hrs and already read almost half. The history of Auschwitz’s has always fascinated me. But reading about is not the same as reading about someone who lived it. This book had changed my view in life, complaining about dumb stuff like what. When people actually suffered bad stuff. I even bought it for my friend to ready of how good it is. Thank you so much Mrs. lily for sharing your story and your pain. I hope one day I can meet you or a family member and hear it in person.

Lily teaches every reader what true joy and happiness are.

Lily teaches every reader what true joy and happiness are. Thai book broke me to read. But it was profound and amazing at showing the Jewish spirit of coming together and not letting anything breaks that which they still had. These men and women could teach so much to others about true suffering and job to bounce back from it. Appreciate the small things. They mean what they say when they say it. Straight from the mind thinking and talk. The world needs this so much these days. Lily should be a truly celebrated person everyday for the rest of her days. And honored for her commitment to remember and share the true story no matter how many painful for her.
