Description

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Perennially popular Little Blue Truck returns to welcome a new neighbor. As Blue and Toad travel along, they are met by each of their animal friends, who have concerns and questions about the animal who has just moved in. Blue takes them all to meet their new neighbor, who lives in a hill with a round door marked "Woodchuck's House." When the door opens, the animals desperately hide and watch as Blue offers Chuck a loud, "WE ARE VERY GLAD YOU'RE HERE!" Chuck expresses his thanks and reveals his shyness, and the other animals are inspired to make friends. While the story offers a lovely message on being welcoming and inclusive, there is great value in the fact that none of the animals are ridiculed or criticized for their fear of meeting their new, "different," neighbor. Blue simply models kindness. That lack of commentary offers young readers a nonintrusive normalization of these feelings without accompanying shame or guilt. This increases the book's relatability and its utility as a discussion prompt on topics ranging from making friends to creating broadly inclusive communities. Typical of this series, the rhyming couplets, animal sounds, and truck beeps make this an excellent choice for a read-aloud. While some couplets do not flow as smoothly as others, this is unlikely to bother most readers. As in more recent entries, John Joseph illustrates in series artist's McElmurry's style of friendly creatures frolicking through detailed pastoral settings. Some adults may be amused that the exterior of Woodchuck's house looks like a Hobbit hole. VERDICT A welcome addition to the Little Blue Truck canon, recommended for general purchase.—Elizabeth Lovsin Instant #1 New York Times Bestseller! "Little Blue is a brave, helpful, and hopeful character young readers will root for. Always a great choice!

Adorable story and darling illustrations as always for another Little Blue book... My nephews enjoyed Little Blue and shared their love with my grandson who has loved the natural and a bit (in a good way) predictable rhyme and rhythm presented in this new book. It is nice to see tha same cast of characters along with Blue as well as somebody new.
I am disappointed, I admit, that this is not available as a board book for my grandson's 1st birthday next month. In reading the description and referring to the age recommendation, I expected it to present with more complex "friend/friendship" related context... Perhaps even some social skill-building geared material, but no. Same as we've read (and loved) from the very beginning. I guess he'll stick with what you know and what you do, isn't that right, Little Blue?
Hoping my baby loves his birthday book...even if we can't leave it down low for him to explore on his own.
Little Blue should always be available in board book upon release - Allow the youngest readers to get their hands (& slobber) all over their most loved books & all of their new friends. [JMHO]

A new friend in town! Yippee!!

This completes our LBT collection, for now! In this story, LBT and friends find out someone new has moved in town. They all hop into LBT to ride to their home, one that no one has seen before. They all hid when they discovered it was a woodchuck, something they’ve never seen before. In the end, a new friend was added to the clan.

This book came in paperback. The story is longer than the original LBT story and the other board books. However, I’d say it’s perfect for a preschooler who “grew up” with the board books and is now ready for longer stories but still loves LBT. If you’re familiar with the title “Little Blue Truck Goes To School,” it’s similar in length to that one. My son just turned 4 and he really loves this story.

Cute story, but we disliked the art this time.

Once again another cute story in the Little Blue Truck series. The storyline itself is great. The animals learn how to make a new friend, which my toddler loved. The cadence is off in a couple of places. It tripped me up reading it out loud for the first time, which rarely happens to me.

My biggest complaint is actually about the art. There isn’t much consistency in the look of the animals this time. The horse, for example, has always had big, bright eyes and a consistent head-shape. This time, the variation is extreme. I’ve posted some pictures. My kid thought the horse was a dog jumping up on the truck. The animals also look more like new parents (or stoners) than they should on a page or two. Check out the bags under their dull eyes!

It’s only ok.

The cadence is off with the writing and the whole thing is long winded. We love the other Little Blue Trucks and have them all memorized- I have gone through multiple copies of each! But my two year old left 1/4 of the way in and my four year old left when it was finished and left it behind. This one just doesn’t have the charm of the others…

There is a new illustrator, John Joseph, and he did a great job matching Jill McElmurry’s style.

Overall we were just disappointed. Maybe it will grow on us.

Different than the rest

My son loves, loves, loves these books and so does my wife and I. We have every single little blue truck book and that is why we were surprised to notice not only is this is different Publisher but the quality of the pages are lower for some reason. Great read and book but if you compare to the rest before this you I'll definitely see and feel a difference in quality of material

Another book my son loves...

My son loves this series. The illustrations are so colorful he loves to point out the butterflies, bees, and animals as we turn the pages. This book was also printed in Italy, where previous books in the series were printed in China.
