Description

"Readers will be delighted... This entertaining and lighthearted look at the life of a woman who took control of her own future is a perfect nonfiction crossover for fans of British chick lit like that of Sophie Kinsella." — Booklist (starred review) “It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me long for a dog! Incredibly moving, very funny and wonderfully wise, this is a brilliant debut memoir and a beacon of hope when we need it most. I shall be recommending it to everyone I know, dog-loving or otherwise.” — Annie Lyons, author of the bestseller The Brilliant Life of Eudora Honeysett “This is a glorious treasure of book starring a cornucopia of canines and their hapless humans. It tickles the funnybone and tugs at the heartstrings. Hugely entertaining.” — Ruth Hogan, author of the bestseller The Keeper of Lost Things “A joy from start to finish. I loved it.” — Stacey Halls, author of The Familiars “With gentle humor, this charming coming-of-age story captures the ups and downs of a young woman defining life on her own terms…warmly uplifting and wise.” — Kirkus Reviews “ Sparkles with humor, joy and wit. If MacDougall is as skilled with dogs as she is with a pen, it’s no wonder her agency became number one. London’s Number One Dog-Walking Agency bounds along with the energy of a rambunctious pup and exudes the wisdom of a beloved canine with an old soul (you know the type). ” — BookPage "MacDougall's fun, brisk storytelling and cleverly rendered details largely focus on growing, improving upon and sustaining her business. However, philosophical undercurrents profoundly define how work--and canine companionship--can enrich the soul and spirit, ultimately giving shape and form to living a more meaningful existence." — Shelf Awareness "A really lovely book for dog lovers."xa0 — #1 international bestselling author Jilly Cooper Kate MacDougall is a writer and journalist who now lives in rural Oxfordshire with her family. She writes features for publications including Country Life , the Telegraph , Horse & Hound , Homes & Antiques whilst also wrangling three small children and two disobedient dogs.

Features & Highlights

  • “ Sparkles with humor, joy and wit. London’s Number One Dog-Walking Agency bounds along with the energy of a rambunctious pup and exudes the wisdom of a beloved canine with an old soul (you know the type)."
  • BookPage
  • The irresistibly charming memoir of a young woman who started her own business as a dog walker for London’s busy, well-heeled dog lovers. A true love letter to London, dogs, and growing up.
  • Aside from the odd biter or growler, the occasional bolter and the one dog who didn’t want to walk, the canines were the easy part. They were a muddy, messy joy in all shapes, sizes and breeds, from greedy Labradors to pampered pugs and everything in between. It was the owners who were the real challenge, a giddy mix of the over-protective, the clueless, the eccentrics and the perfectionists. There is no rule book on how to navigate the obsessions of the London dog owner. A degree in human psychology would have been far preferable to any sort of animal qualification. Not that I had either…
  • In 2006, Kate MacDougall was working a safe but dull job at the venerable auction house Sotheby’s in London. After a clumsy accident nearly destroyed a precious piece of art, she quit Sotheby’s and set up her own dog-walking company. Kate knew little about dogs and nothing about business, and no one thought being a professional dog walker was a good use of her university degree. Nevertheless, Kate embarked upon an entirely new and very much improvised career walking some of the city’s many pampered pooches, branding her company “London's Number One Dog Walking Agency.”
  • With sharp wit, delightful observations, and plenty of canine affection, Kate reveals her unique and unconventional coming-of-age story, as told through the dogs, and the London homes and neighborhoods they inhabit. One walk at a time, she journeys from a haphazard twentysomething to a happily—and surprisingly—settled adult, with love, relationships, drama, and home ownership along the way. But, as Kate says, “It’s all down to the dogs” and what they taught her about London—and life.

Too many people, not enough dogs

I went into this excited to get to know more about the business of dog walking and to get to hear about some interesting and lovable dogs. Stories of the clients consumed the book--we didn't get to know much about any dogs, even Mabel, the author's own dog. Dogs have huge personalities that would have been fun to explore but the space was spent on people which we get plenty of in other books.

Well written memoir

This is a book I recommend to any person who loves dogs and loves to read. Actually, It is a good book for anyone who enjoys reading. The author lives in London and she writes about her efforts and success at building a job for herself---dog walking. She has interesting adventures with this activity.

Dog Lovers will enjoy

A lot is about the dog owner's actually and is a nice light read. It was not as humorous as I somehow thought it would be so that is why 4 stars.

Slow off the mark but then good.

I don't think this is the ultimate book on dog walking that it could have been. I nearly gave up but hung in there and the middle is good and the end is kind of okay. I guess there are sparks of fun and laughter and I don't think I could do better, but the reviews on the outside made me think it would be much better.

Exceptionally well-written & engaging - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I read a lot of memoirs, biographies and nonfiction. A few Amazon reviewers complain that the book isn't just about dogs but clearly they didn't read the summary. The book is a heartfelt journey of a young woman in her late 20's making a career change from her boring desk job to starting a business and all the craziness it entails with walkers, clients and dogs.

Her writing drew me in instantly as her use of words, ideas and observations are emotional, thoughtful, entertaining and self-deprecating. I found myself lingering over certain sentences to let them sink in.

I encourage everyone to read this book or at least read a few sample pages - it is different from most in its thoughtfulness but is also highly entertaining. I loved reading about her many issues with hiring & managing dog-walkers (some unusual characters), dealing with crazy demanding clients and the never-ending situations that arise when working with dogs.

I also loved the London setting - I found myself looking up mentioned locations on Google maps, and she uses many British phrases and references that give the book a lot of fun foreign character.

Each dog is unique….and worth understanding.

She is happy to share her mistakes, her personal stories, her successes and her love and respect for each dog she meets. She has you rooting for her personal and business success. She respects the individuality of each human client and even more importantly her dog charges. She is very honest about her own ups and downs. I thought the last few chapters were particularly moving. Like so many storytellers you realize at the end you have benefited from this tale. You laughed, teared up and wanted to thank her for her insights.

enjoyable and entertaining

When Kate MacDougall decided to quit her dull job at Sotheby’s in London she didn’t really have an alternative in mind. She just knew that her current job wasn’t enjoyable and, truth be told, she wasn’t all that good at it either. It was 2006 and, after some debate, Kate decided to start a dog walking business. It was a fairly new concept in the UK, but it seemed like it could be quite successful - even though Kate knew next to nothing about running a business and very little about dogs.

London’s Number One Dog Walking Agency is a delightful memoir that is told with humor and grace. Meeting the many dogs and their owners that inhabit the pages of this book was a delight. Ms MacDougall’s observations about London, people, dogs, and life in general are thoughtful and descriptive. Even though memoirs are not a typical read for me, I couldn’t resist a book about dogs. I’m happy to say that I wasn’t disappointed and I recommend this enjoyable book.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.
