Description

Review “This highly graphic, exciting guide has enough variety with simple technique to match any interest. It will appeal to budding artists and seasoned crafters alike.”— Library Journal “These handmade smash books are glorious. … Make Your Own Ideabook is so fun and inspiring, and will make you want to make your own books and fill them with all sorts of great stuff.”— CraftGossip.com “It’s one thing to make a handmade book, but it’s another to fill it. Make Your Own Ideabook with Arne & Carlos has fantastic ideas and techniques for both!”— Cloth, Paper, Scissors About the Author Arne Nerjordet and Carlos Zachrison launched their Arne & Carlos knitwear line in 2007, gaining notice with their witty reworkings of classic Scandinavian motifs—for example, intricately patterned sweaters festooned with space invaders rather than reindeer. Their brand hit big when Rei Kawakubo of cult fashion house Commes des Gar?on commissioned a mini collection in 2008, followed by a line of garments for US-based Urban Outfitters in 2009, as well as Dale of Norway. Arne & Carlos were motivated to empower others to recreate their fabulous designs, so they have backburnered their ready-to-wear lines and instead travel internationally, teaching knitting classes and promoting their five books, which show knitting-lovers how to recreate Arne & Carlos’ unique knitwear patterns with step-by-step instructions. Their books are now published in fourteen languages and have sold almost half-a-million copies worldwide. Arne & Carlos have starred in features in numerous online and print publications, as well as appeared on television morning and talk shows in Scandinavia and Europe. They are charming, personable, quirky, and sophisticated—superb conversationalists and the utmost professionals. They are the authors of the international best-selling books 55 Christmas Balls to Knit ; Easter Knits ; Knitted Dolls ; Knit-and-Crochet Garden , Norwegian Knits with a Twist and 30 Slippers to Knit and Felt also available from Trafalgar Square Books. Their creative base is in the Valdres region of Norway, north of Oslo. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. FOREWORDIt’s all about the joy of owning one book or several, and how nice it is to leaf through all types of paper, sewn together by you and for you. This book shows you how to make and use your own homemade ideabooks. We’ve heard about the “paperless society,” but we think paper is no less important now than it ever was. There are beautiful books and magazines that are all about the paper. Paper continues to make people happy. Reading with a tablet or computer can’t compare to the feeling of owning and holding a book. Every home should have some bookshelves—and some books to put on them. You can collect your thoughts, recipes for cooking, inspiration for handcrafts, notes, secrets, and pictures in your own hand-made ideabooks. You can glue in tickets and cuttings from tours you’ve been on, holidays you’ve taken, places you’ve visited. Make your own notebooks nice and thick with soft and ragged edges, and fill them with ideas and memories. Glue and repair spines and cracks between the pages, because you’ll want to put in everything—and that can be a little hard on a book. And what do we mean by “ideabook”? A book you’ve made yourself can hold anything you want! It could, for example, be a memory book, a planning book, a renovations book, or perhaps a gardening book. Well-worn books are like old people—they are lovelier because they’ve lived a life with good memories! Most people who work creatively have one or more such books. Some are satisfied with a loose-leaf system. They place page after page in a ring binder or preserve the papers in folders; others collect their papers in plastic document folders or glue their chosen memories in sketch books. We’ve sewn and created our own ideabooks for many years, and used these books to document all aspects of our creative lives. To look into our ideabooks is the nearest one can come to looking into the creative right sides of our brains. We welcome you in! Read more

Get this beautiful book now!

I really enjoyed this book! I did not necessarily learn anything new like how to make or bind a book or-get new ideas for idea books to make-most of the idea books that were in the book; I am already making or keep, but I was happy to see that I was on the right track and different options if I wanted them.

I will say though it was cool to see all of the collections that these 2 authors have created. Their work is bold, there are beautiful pictures in this book and the pages are luscious, inspirational, and such a great way to store ideas and found paper and keepsakes. I love the way they store and keep history and collectibles right in front of you by turning it into another form of artwork. My favorite idea books were the crocheting, fashion, cookbooks, quilting and sewing idea books.

I am a fan and really enjoyed the book. I would recommend for any artist, archivist, scrap booker and book maker. Highly recommend adding this to your library.

A lovely idea book...

I was looking for a general "how-to" book of ideas and instructions for making various journals, journal cards, pockets, belly bands, tucks, altered paper clips, covers, signatures, paper and fabric snippets, etc. This book is not that kind of book.

It is a lovely book, full of photos and ideas for making personal journal books. The authors demonstrate their favorite way to bind books and offer many theme ideas. It reflects the authors' styles more than offering general how-to ideas. Because it is a very nice book in its own right, I gave it five stars. Just because it's not what I was looking for is no reason to knock it down. (I did return it with no problem.)

Why buy when you can make your own art journal!

I have this book.....a friend recommed it and glad I bought it. I love this book....fun....creative...lots of ideas if you don't want to be an archivalist and perfectionist in the bookmaking world. Can use stuff you have on hand ....use what you have concept....doesn't have to be one of those "precious" journals that you end up never using. I found the instructions to be easy and clear to follow (having made some of those fancy books before) so it was easy to make. Nice photos and lots of inspiration.

Great Technique and Inspiration

I love the ideas and inspiration this book offered. I buy a lot of books about bookmaking and this was a totally new technique than I've seen before.
The only fault I could find was some of the directions were unclear. Could have used more step by step instruction on the construction, but I figured it out!
I think part of the trouble is that this book was not written in English as a first language. I believe that Arnie and Carlos are from Sweden.
Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys journaling and bookmaking. Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys journaling and bookmaking

Great content, bad translation

I recommend watching the video on Arne and Carlos's YouTube channel to better understand the instructions. The book is obviously translated by a non-native speaker and the translation is at times not only bad but wrong. If you're familiar with the video you don't really need the book but it's still fun to have.

Love these guys and their vibe!

I am in my late 60s, and have a crazy amount of art supplies that I want to use up before, well, you know. Specifically paper. So I've seen that people are making their own "sketchbooks" incorporating different kinds of paper. I bought a few "Make a Book" tools at Michaels and Blick, looked at things on YouTube and Pinterest - Waaaaay too complicated, most of them. Defeats my purpose. Then these 2 guys from Sweden popped up on YouTube. They are designers and do a lot of high-crafts and also bind journals using found paper, old paper. I found this book on Amazon, and took a chance and ordered it - the easiest instructions yet on how to easily bind a journal type book. They have a few quick vids on the topic too on YouTube. They have a nice way about them that's very Zen and soothing - like, hey, you can do this - it's fun and play! Very inspiring layout too. Very creative and fun.

Beautiful pictures and lots of book idea themes

Arne and Carlos never disappoint. This book explains how to make your idea books and it gives you samples and themes for you to choose from. This book explains one way to bind your book and how to use it, it is not a bookbinding book. It shows you the kind of idea books (or visual journals) that you could make. I really liked it and it sparked my creativity

Amazing ideas for creating books!

I began creating junk journals a few years ago and really wished I discovered this book back then! Arne and Carlos are insanely creative and share their ideas with the readers. I was fortunate to get a tip on a youtube channel that this book is a "must have" and it truly is! Don't hesitate to buy it, it's fantastic and inspiring!

Absolutely inspired and inspiring!

I am gathering all kinds of things to write my family history during the coming year, and the many ideas that are in this Idea Book are just so exciting. These two fellows who were the authors must just be a delight in person. The pictures make the transfer of their lovely final products into ideas for one's own finished product quite achievable. I am so pleased that I took a chance and ordered this, and will surely have a book, or possibly more than one, to leave for my family, that will be a great source of pride. Thank you, Gentlemen!
