Jenny Slate is an actress, stand-up comedian, and the New York Times bestselling author of Little Weirds. She has been in many movies and TV shows and also plays many cartoon animals. Jenny is a graduate of Columbia University and has a young heart and an antique soul. She lives in Massachusetts and California, with her husband Ben, her daughter Ida, and their dog Sally. Dean Fleischer Camp is a writer, director, editor and New Yorkxa0Times -bestselling author. Since directing internet sensation MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON in 2010, Camp’s work in film and television has been profiled in virtually every major American media outlet. His first feature film, the experimental documentary FRAUD (2018), was released to widespread controversy and acclaim after fighting broke out among attendees at its HotDocs world premiere. Described as a “brilliantly provocative”( Filmmaker ) and “exhilarating”( Sight+Sound ) “masterwork”(IDA’s Documentary Magazine ) that “pushes the boundaries of documentary”( Variety ), the film has since developed a cult following and is routinely used in educational settings to promote media literacy. His first narrative feature film, 2022’s MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON, starring Jenny Slate, Isabella Rossellini, and Lesley Stahl, will mark distributor A24’s first animated film and its first family film. As a commercial director, Camp has created content for HBO, TBS, Comedy Central, Kellogg’s, P&G, and others. He lives in Los Angeles with his dog, a terrier named Arthur.

Fun for Adults and Kids

Earlier tonight, I went to an event for this book. The authors did a reading, and the whole audience loved it--especially the kids. I bought a copy for my old elementary school's library. Kids will love Marcel and his companions, and adults will appreciate the humor and beautiful illustrations.

Disappointing - children can't read on their own

The pictures are great and the story is ok. The greatest disappointment though is the printing or writing. It is a strange cursive, that is very difficult for children to decipher what the words are, so reading on their own is not possible. When reading with children, it is great for them to see words that look familiar and they can identify time after time. It is not possible with the print in this book. I think descriptions on Amazon should alert buyers when something is this different from the norm.

Wanna know what I use as a hat?

... a lentil.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is perhaps the biggest and best underdog of modern youtube experience. As a tiny shell with shoes, Marcel gets caught up in many different issues, but he never let's them get to him. Instead, he keeps a positive outlook and replaces the things he doesn't have with things he did.

The World could learn a lot from Marcel. He has some self-esteem issues, but, he is a shell, so he gets over them quickly. He is optimistic to the very end, and always adorable.

If you aren't familiar with the character of Marcel, go to youtube nd watch the original video (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On) and then the sequel (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, 2). They are near masterpieces. Then buy this book. Kids will love it, adults will laugh at it.

I am 17 years old, and a pretty intellectual guy. Last year, after taking the AP exam for AP Biology, my teacher would let us watch youtube videos during class. This was one we kept watching. Marcel is an inspiration for all ages. Please don't pass him up.

(P.S. I think this review has a higher wordcount than the book itself, but the pictures are really really nice, and it is a nice keepsake/gift.)

Good but...

I had this book sent to my grandson after seeing a story about the authors on TV and watching the very clever videos. My son reported that my grandson really liked it but he was not able to read it himself. For some reason, the authors (publisher?) printed it in cursive writing. They are teaching cursive in very few elementary schools now so that makes it difficult to use as a "read it yourself" book.

as expected

You may not "get" this book if you haven't seen the videos, but it's really cute! I bought it as sort of a coffee table book for my friend who enjoys the videos. The drawings are well-done and not too childish. It's a fun purchase if you love shells with pet dogs that are actually pieces of lint with strings tied on them.

a fabulous addition to the video

If you have ever watched the video that made this little shell famous, you will be amazed at how much reading this book out loud will make you sound just like Marcel from the video. My three-year-old daughter doesn't quite know what to make of this book -- she's a practical child, so a shell with an eye and shoes is a bit too far fetched for her. But it has quickly become one of my favorites!

Brings joy to both adults and kids :)

One of my best friends loves the Marcel the Shell youtube videos and telling joke in the Marcel voice. I got her the book as a Christmas gift that I thought she would get a kick out of and she ADORED it! She said she read it to her whole family that morning and they were all laughing during the story. She also read it to the kids she babysits and they loved it to!

Not for young kids

This book is a little too "avant garde" for young kids. Not sure how it might go for preschoolers. It's very "artistic" and the snail looks like a nose. It is cutely written as if a first grader was telling the choppy story but for a youngster it has no story that is understandable. Written in first person narrative.

This is such a cute book! Marcel is so ...

This is such a cute book! Marcel is so endearing. The only thing is the font is a bit hard for kids to read - it is the same as the lettering on the book cover. It's a very cute and clever story.

Love it but...

I liked the book, but I was a little dissapointed with it. I was expecting it to be exactly like the video. Hopefully they make it one day. The shoud make the letters a little easier to read for kids.
