Description

Review
“This classic, gigantic work is the record of Christian faith and endurance from the first century to the Anabaptist persecutions in the 16th. Baptist, Brethren, Mennonite, and other descendants of the Anabaptist will be especially interested in these stories of men and women who died for their belief.” —CBA Marketplace
( Endorsement ) From the Back Cover Martyrs Mirror is a record of the path of the early martyrs. The price of their own life, limbs, and blood was a gift they gladly gave to preserve what they believed to be a pure faith and the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. Tortures, persecutions, and sufferings were endured with a fortitude and heroism that is unparalleled in history. About the Author
Thieleman J. van Braght (1625-1664), an elder of the Anabaptist congregation in Dordrecht in the Netherlands, collected accounts of martyrdom, intending to enlarge a Dutch martyr book of 1631. When he finished in 1660 with the publication of Martyrs Mirror, he had doubled the size of the original. A large book of 1290 pages appeared. The author hoped that the book would inspire the reader to hold as tenaciously to the faith as did the Christian martyrs. The heritage of bloodshed and persecution for the sake of a clear conscience and a pure faith grounded in the Word of God is the heritage of the Christian church.

Story of...

.. persecution of Christians from the Anabaptist (Mennonite, Amish) standpoint. The book was first published in Holland in 16th century, then translated into German in Pennsylvania early in the 19th century. The English translation came much later, probably because while present day Amish and more conservative Mennonites still speak Pennsylvanisch ("Pennsylvania Dutch"), derived from SW German and Swiss German dialects, most of them no longer read Hochdeutsch so well as English. In his excellent history of German migrations into southern Va. in colonial times ("The Virginia Germans"), Klaus Wust recounts how late in the Civil War immigrant German Union soldiers from Illinois were shocked when, in primitive cabins above the Shennendoah Valley (Allegheny side) they found copies of the Martyr's Mirror in German. In any case, the reader is treated to brief accounts of beheadings, burnings, and drownings without pause.

Amish Classic

The Martyr's Mirror is a Seventeenth Century Anabaptist work, still actively read and used in Amish and Mennonite homes everywhere. Many of these stories will bring one to tears as they consider the suffering of those who gave their all for their faith.
This edition contains many beautiful illustrations. I like how well bound it is, sturdy and attractive. Well worth the price for such a large volume.

An Old Friend

Shortly after my family moved to the Amish community in Tennessee, I was introduced to "The Martyr's Mirror." Up until that point, I "knew" about Christians who had given their lives for the sake of the Gospel, but didn't have a clue as to their passion for Christ and the unspeakable tortures they endured, rather than deny Him.

At the age of 12, I had read every one of the stories multiple times, and began to expand my research on the history behind them.

As an adult, it still amazes me how so many are oblivious to the persecutions of the church in the past two thousand years; and many that have some knowledge of history actually believe that the Church was dead for a thousand years until Martin Luther came along with his 95 thesis.

The Martyr's Mirror is a full-sized book with 1200 pages of history; starting with the apostles and ending in the year 1660. It is an incredible account of the steadfastness of the saints. The lives and deaths of 4,011 are chronicled in this massive volume, but many references are made to groups of unnamed believers who were martyred for Christ.

This book made a tremendous impact on my life as a child, and for the past 20 years I have desired a copy for my own library. My wonderful husband ordered it for my birthday and it came in the mail last night.

As I scanned the pages, it felt like re-uniting with an old friend.

One of a kind

Martyr's Mirror is a one-of-a-kind book, nothing else quite like it. As a pastor who likes to share credible stories on the lives and deaths of earlier Christian martyrs, I use it all the time. Others borrow it all the time. Great gift for pastor or teacher types too. Only downside: it's big and it's heavy! Also, if you demand modern language, you may not prefer the old language used, however I find this lends to the authenticity.

Every Monnite home needs a copy of this book.

Every Mennonite home needs a copy. Tons of stories and testimonies abound in this book and it's rich in history and detail of the Annabaptist faith. I've read a lot of this book but still haven't finished it. It will take a while to get through it. I've learned a lot by reading this book and I appreciate the sacrifices others made for the faith we take for granted today.

Martyrs Mirror

This is a classic book on the Mennonite persecution during the reformation. It provided many details about these events and answered questions I had. The book is often referred to in other writings so it is a useful reference for my genealogical research.
