Description

William Holmes McGuffey (1800-1873) was a "born" educator. Beginning by teaching his younger brothers and sisters, William McGuffey accepted his first teaching position at 13 in a one-room school with 48 students. After graduating from Washington College and being ordained as a Presbyterian minister, he taught moral philosophy at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio for almost ten years. It was during this period that McGuffey wrote and compiled the Readers that made him famous. Later McGuffey rose to the rank of university president, serving Cincinnati College and Ohio University. He spent the final third of his life teaching moral philosophy at the University of Virginia.

original, not revised version

I love this, and so does my struggling reader! The simplicity of the two letter words in the beginning are really helping to build courage in sounding out words. The lessons get progressively more difficult as you go along- much better than buying a box set of early reader books like wentried last year. I wish I had found this sooner!

beginning reader

I bought this as a primer for teaching my daughter to read. It has a pictorial alphabet with the words in upper and lower case so your child can read words both ways. Each night we pratice reading from it. Introduces short words and simple sentences that are great for repetition practice. The book progresses nicely from the alphabet, to simple sentences, to paragraphs and eventually short stories. I will definately purchase more McGuffey's after seeing the quality of this one. Binding and cover is very sturdy and nice quality.

Sometimes Old Fashioned Methods work the best

I don't know why I like this book, but it has worked well for us. I am homeschooling my 5 year old, and we have numerous other reading resources in addition to this (Bob books, dolche sight words in flash card form, Phonics Pathways) I picked this book up on a whim, not sure if we would even use it, but its history appealed to me, and my daughter likes it so much we've integrated it into our lessons 3-4 days a week. My 3 year old likes looking at it too, especially the beginning alphabet section. Won't be long before she's reading it as well.

Steady progress in writing and reading with this Primer!

I am using this Primer to teach my four year old to read and write in conjunction with the methodology of The Writing Road to Reading (the Spalding method). We both enjoy working through this book! I love that it progresses with enough repetition of previously learned words, interspersed with more newly learned words, and adding a few challenging spellings with each lesson. And my daughter beams with confidence at the end of each lesson because she's mastered some previously learned words and persevered through the newer challenging words as well as new concepts like commas. We usually celebrate with a sticker and lots of high fives!

Overall, I'm really enjoying the simplicity and timelessness of this Primer. I'm looking forward to working all the way through this "challenge" book, as we call it, and then to the others in this series! It's such a great tool for teaching the basics of writing and reading.

Just as an idea, this is how our daily lessons go...
I start by reading the word/sentence (the book starts with isolated words then builds to sentences) to my daughter so that she can identify the phonograms (sounds) she hears and write them down. After she sounds out and writes the word, I have her read her written word, and we do this until she finishes the sentence. Then she reads her sentence. We continue this way until she finishes the set of sentences (right now at Lesson 8 we're at five sentences). She then gets to read the same sentences from the Primer and look at the picture. I usually try to have her read through the set three times. By the third time through, her reading fluency improves so that she hesitates less and uses proper inflections for the various sentence types - statement, question, and exclamation, and even pauses for commas! Hooray!

Wonderful book to begin teaching reading & writing

The McGuffey's Pictorial Eclectic Primer is commonly used for ages 6-9. I bought this for my daughter's homeschool class. She has learned to read well on the McGuffey books. I highly recommend the use of these books for educational tools. Why spend a lot of money on other programs? This books is broken down in simple, easy to understand lessons

Book is great, condition is not

Only paid $6 for this including shipping so can't really complain much. It's worth $6. But the condition wasn't described very well. May have some signs of wear shouldn't mean part of the spine is missing. Pages themselves are in great shape.and some clear tape should fix the binding

Great book for learning to read.

I bought this for my 5 year old so we could practice on reading before he starts Kindergarten. This book was perfect. At the beginning it had pictures with the word beside them, it is great because some of the pictures you can't guess what they are and you have to really sound them out. Then it goes to short stories where it has about 5 sentences of very small words, very easy for children trying to learn to read. We haven't made it very far in the book as we just bought it recently, but as you go farther into the book the pictures have sentences beside them not just one word. Again this is the perfect book for trying to teach a child to read, highly recommend to everyone.

review

I was sent a paperback instead of the hardcover version I ordered. However, they refunded my money because they did not have a hardcover version and let me keep the paperback at no charge so I guess that squares up everything.
