"Mediterranean Diet for Dummies" a Smart Choice!

This is the best book I've read yet on the Mediterranean Diet. It explains what the "Diet"--actually a life-style- is all about, how to transition into it, and why it is so good for you. I have tried some of the recipes, and they are delicious, and generally call for ingredients you have on hand. I highly recommend this book if you are planning to eat in a more healthful way. It is easy to read, interesting, and packed full of valuable information.

I am a physician so knew a little about the benefits of the Mediterranean diet and wanted to get started. The information is accurate-often writers exaggerate when promoting something but not in this book. Pros and cons are honestly presented. It is so simple to understand and gives suggestions for keeping costs down that I can share with my patients who are on limited budgets. I have already shared it with several. There are not a lot of recipes, that was not the point. This book was meant to help us understand the basic concepts of the diet so we can incorporate it into our lives.

Don't believe the title

For me this book talks more about health than the Mediterranean diet. I goes over heart disease, kidney disease, and the many benefits of the diet. Very few recipes in the back of the book. It does give info on herbs and spices of this diet. I was very disappointed.

For beginners

I use it as a rough guide. The base of the pyramid is grains then in the book it says to have 25% of your meal as grains. I might be wrong, but if you use the pyramid as a guide, you might be eating too many carbs, I think.

This book is WONDERFUL!!

I thought this book was just wonderful. I have read many books about the Mediterranean Diet and also got info online. This book has such great info to get you following the Mediterranean. I don't call it a diet because it's not a diet. You eat this way forever, the way the Mediterranean people eat this way. An endocrinologist told me the Mediterranean is the best diet there is and I believe her. I was first on this diet in the early 2000's and lost 30 pounds. Like a dummy, I went off of it but the 30 pounds did not come back. I am now following it and am now losing weight again. I have been on every diet there is and this one is the BEST!! The author did a great job giving so much information re: the Mediterranean way of eating. I don't say the D word anymore. I just call it the Mediterranean. I am a chipoholic. When I'm on the Mediterranean, I don't even crave chips anymore because my body now craves the good foods. And I feel so much better and happier now. Again, great job by the author. I bought the Mediterranean Diet Cookbook for Dummies and I can't wait to start reading it. Start eating the Mediterranean way, you won't regret it. #EatMediterraneanForever. :)

Keeping on with For Dummies quality!

As many other For Dummies book, this one is very informative and well written in a colloquial speech. However, I missed some direct orientation for arranging my meals as a diet prescription, which is common in diet books. Nonetheless, I recommend this book for you as it may prove an introductory, however complete, reference about the subject.

Not What I Had In Mind

For decades the Mediterranean Diet has been held up as a solution for everything from weight loss to heart disease. Some of these notions are a little ify--the simple truth is that when it comes to diet, no two experts agree. Still, the Mediterranean diet does have several decades worth of study going for it, and it seems worth serious consideration.

Enter MEDITERRANEAN DIET FOR DUMMIES. Quite frankly, I expected a few chapters of general discussion (what it is and why it is believed to work) followed by recipes. What I got was a splash of history, a lot of sidebars and graphics, and page after page on what heart disease is, what diabetes is, what olive oil is, what barley is, and why I should overcome my life-long dislike and try sardines once more. The book tells you what ingredients to use, it even gives you tips on scheduling time for cooking. Unfortunately, it offers about twenty ho-hum recipes as examples. I could do better in five minutes on the internet.

If you are actually looking for a cookbook, there is such a thing as THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET COOKBOOK FOR DUMMIES. It is probably of more practical use than this particular book. Because, quite frankly, almost anything else would be.
