Features & Highlights

  • Not many people can say they met and married their spouse within thirty days of beginning to hike the Pacific Crest Trail.
  • But that’s exactly what happened to twenty-five-year-old Claire Henley Miller.
  • Mile 445
  • is the inspiring—and romantic—true story of how Miller left corporate life behind to embark on a 2,650-mile hike from Mexico to Canada. She is doing it alone, and the only gear she takes to survive the trek in the mountains of California, Oregon, and Washington fits inside her sixty-eight-liter backpack.
  • At the start of her five-month journey, she meets a handsome young man known on the trail as Big Spoon. Their paths keep crossing. The two quickly see a greater reason for their expedition than to explore the rigorous wilderness. They fall madly in love and get married. But their adventure is just beginning.
  • Told with rich vitality, Miller’s quest unfolds in mystical ways through deadly desert storms, 14,000-foot ascents, and decisions that will affect the rest of her life. This bold tale of courage and determination brims with humor and suspense as it reveals life, love, and loss in the rawness of the wild.

Half the book is a trail book, the other half is conversations.

I enjoyed the beginning of this book but it lost its way pretty quick after the marriage part. It went from a trail story to a story about many, many conversations about how everything would work out for them because of their faith. After the first couple of those conversations the rest of their conversations no longer added anything to the story. After their wedding she seems to really lose interest in the trail and in writing about it. I think it's great she found her partner and they were true to themselves and what choices they needed and wanted to make on the trail but i think it would have been more interesting had she not skipped over so much of her time on the trail after they got married. This would have been a much better book if in the second half she had less pages of talking and more trail descriptions.

Great Read! She takes you along with her.

This is a great read. Writing style is wonderful. I read it on a beach trip. Thought "true grit" had gone out of style but Claire's book proved me wrong. Highly recommend.

A Story with a Message

This true life story has all the hallmarks of an archetypal fairy tale in an improbable setting; for sometimes, real life really is stranger than fiction.

What affected me most was the underlying message. MILE 445 reinforces that no matter what there are always things worth belleving in: that good will always conquer evil, that honor and courage and virtue mean everything and power and money mean nothing. And that true love is the greatest power of all. Because these are the things worth believing in.

Eh

This is the writing of someone who would blindly marry someone she did not yet know. she tells a story but lacks a voice of her own. She helped me understand life on the pct a bit more and for that I am appreciative. The book reads very much like a book report. I don't relate to this woman at all but can't hate too much bc she published a book and completed a goal. Good for her. Get lost in the woods by aspen matis. It's a much better read about finding love on the trail.

Must Buy for Sure

I received my copy of this book on Friday and read it yesterday. It was a story of soul searching, determination and love. The path grabs the reader and you wonder what lies ahead for her. She describes each new experience with delight and wonder and even meets a few Earth Angels along the way. All of us have a journey, or path, in life and hers was connected to Caleb. How wonderful for them and all the others who will walk that trail wondering if it will happen for them too. God bless you both and please keep writing Claire you are a star!

Loved it! I could not put this book down. How can you not believe in destiny or angels after reading this book? I am a big believer that everything happens for a reason and Mile 445 just confirms that. In these troubling times it's refreshing to see that there really is so much kindness and love out there! Thank you for sharing your adventure with us Claire Henley Miller, Big Spoon seems like quite a guy!
