This one should keep you turning pages till the end

3.5
This is one of those books that I wasn’t sure if I was enjoying for a good bit of the time, or so I thought, yet I just could not put the thing down and kept rapidly turning those pages.
Francine Day, a divorce lawyer, has built a career on doing everything right. She’s just one case away from securing her place among the elite of London. Of course, when that one case involves Martin Joy, all her hard work at maintaining caution is out the window and she soon finds herself having a quite graphic sexual affair.
Martin is very insistent that his marriage is over but Francine just doesn’t trust him. She feels things he tells her don’t add up. She’s truly becoming obsessed with him and the relationship (now, I would say it’s rather unhealthy myself not that much about any of this is healthy…) and decides to stalk, I mean, follow his soon to be ex wife one night. There she sees the two together.
The very next morning Francine wakes up in her neighbors house with blood all on her clothes and all dirty yet she can’t recall at all what happened after a certain point (blind drunk plotline anyone?) Soon she gets another bit of news, Donna Martin’s wife is missing. No one has seen her since that dinner.
From this point on I can’t tell you too much more since this is where the story really picks up. There are things that happen that make sense and some that don’t. There’s a sexual assault storyline that begins but has the ability to annoy in more ways than one all the way to the end. There is the whole thing that doesn’t quite get acknowledged, or I don’t think it fully did, that Francine might have a few issues to work through but I can’t get into that. I think as you read and get to the end you’ll see. Some people come out of this book with a lot of damage, some none, some minimal, and some so little you have to scratch your head and wonder why? Some things that I think aren’t supposed to be are perfectly okay and, well, I don’t know.
I had a love hate with this book but the two things I definitely give it. It’s well written in that it kept pulling me back in no matter what and I still haven’t stopped thinking about certain parts of it ten days later. So, it’s probably worth reading to see what you think about all of that.

Fell Flat

While I could not put down the book and had to read it to the end, I was disappointed in the ending. It seemed to fall flat.

Good but not great

First the cover the book and the description about obsession, lures you into the book, but found there was nothing in the book about obsession. And as a few others pointed out, the story tends to drag a bit. But I stuck with it to the bitter end.Three stars.

This was a decent thriller.

Thank you William Morrow Books for the physical copy, and Edelweiss for the E-ARC. #Partner, all opinions are my own.

I rate this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Okay, so the prologue was Amazing, and I totally thought I was in for the best read of my life. But something just didn't work for me, for instance, there was  way to much going on in this book, a lot of side stories, and side characters, and for me it made me lose sight of the main storyline. The cover says it's a story of obsession, it just wasn't the type of obsession I was hoping for. This was more of a money/power-driven obsession.

I knew what happened to Donna Joy very early on in the book, the only thing I had wrong was the reason why. Which is another issue I had with this book. Parts of this story were just very odd, but I cannot go into detail as it will be a spoiler. I also really didn't like how it ended. I know it really seems like I am tearing this book apart, and I don't intend too. So let me get in to what I liked about this book.

I did love the Martin and Francine together, I enjoyed their intimate moments, and the thrill of them being together. I liked how fast paced this book was, I felt like I flew through the pages. I liked the way Butler described the areas and different cities the book took place in, the details regarding the houses was very visionary. The friends that Francine has I really appreciated, as well the talk of mental health, and the normalization that Butler brought to it.

Overall, I did not have nor did I love this book. I liked this book, and I enjoyed the read. I may not have agreed with things, and the paths that Butler took with the story and the characters, but that's okay, because I guarantee one of you guys is going to love this book!
