Kanna gets her own spin-off series

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid is one of my favorite manga series and it gets a spin-off, featuring the adventures of Kanna, the little dragon girl. The first volume gives us a charming series of tales, mostly of Kanna and her best friend Saikawa getting into a number of situations. The girls go to a shrine on New Year's. They build an igloo and get snowed in. On Valentine's Day, they try their hands at making chocolates. There are rumors of a haunted video game arcade. My favorite story has Kanna waking up and seeing Miss Kobayashi and Tohru having a nightcap and she and Saikawa decide they want to try that as well (I think a lot of readers will get a kick out of Kanna's sleepers). Aside from the few fantasy touches, Kanna and Saikawa come across as typical young girls and I was glad to see the return of Saikawa's older sister Georgie, who likes to imagine herself as a maid. Probably many mothers would think having a daughter who likes dressing and acting like a maid would be a nice problem to have. While Miss Kobayashi creator Coolkyosinnjya provides the story, it is Mitsuhiro Kimura who does the art, and the work is very good. Kanna's Daily Life is a fine companion to the original series.

Author & Art Change

Just some things to note, the author of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid did not do the art or story for this spin-off series. It was done with the author's permission and input. All of the art is noticeably different from the original. There are not really chapters as much as small one-page sections that link together (but the flow isn't like the original). If you go into it with the mindset I had that it would be just like the original just with a different focus, you will be in for a slight shock. I'm not saying it is bad or anything, just expect it before you start reading it that it will be entirely different format and art. At the top of each page is a short few word description of the scene for that page.

So much cute

As the title implies, this is a spin-off series from Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid focusing on the child-like dragon Kanna. It's basically a four-strip, where each page is one scene or mini-plot, and as such it has a lot of narrative momentum. Kanna is unquestionably one of the cutest characters in the manga world, and because she is a dragon from another world living on Earth, her child-like quality is doubled (if not squared). There are some squicky elements that suggest a lesbian relationship with one of her human classmates, and that makes some people uncomfortable, but if you can look past that this is a sweet and funny series.
