A Relatively "Plain Jane" Story

The first two Jane books were so much fun that I knew I needed to read this one before I even knew what it’d be about. To that point, I’ve always been interested in Annie Oakley so a book about Calamity Jane (someone I didn’t know all that much about but existed in the sort of same space) was definitely intriguing to me.

Though this book carries on its predecessors’ fluidity with history and pop culture references and penchant for witty dialogue, it sadly didn’t impress me as much as the first two. The story here is just okay. But since the story very directly and wholly influences character arcs and personalities, it leaves those a bit lackluster as well. For instance, this didn’t feel much like Jane’s book. In fact, I think I liked her least. That could be because I’ve always been an Annie Oakley girl so my brain was wired to see her as the main character, but Jane didn’t do all that much here to sway me into putting the spotlight on her in my brain.

That being said, the book, although large, moves pretty quickly and at a good pace. The main romances are fun and the western setting introduces a lot to play with. One of my favorite parts was a hilarious call out to The Avengers, which left me wondering how the authors ever got permission to include it.

I’m not sure I’ll be picking this one up again (like I would love to do for the first two), but will definitely continue on with the authors as they explore the Marys of history!

The Version is Impeccable!

I absolutely love how all these books are written. Taking historical figures (or sometimes historical fiction characters), twisting the story with fantasy, and using narration the entire time like breaking the 4th wall, is (I think) genius and so fun. This definitely includes this story. I enjoyed every minute of it. I hope the authors continue on writing books like these. :)

Fun story

If anything these are fun rides and stories, the audiobooks are excellent. My Lady Jane is the best for sure and I can't wait to check out the next series of Mary's over the next 3 years. You wouldn't guess these are written by 3 authors, they flow so well.
