Burned the book for climate change

I am a vegan and a forks over knives convert. I have and read most of Brenda's books. I have admired her work in the Marshall Islands and listened to many of her lectures of youtube. So, I looked forward to her new book and preordered it. But, by the time I got to Chapter 2 on climate change and read all the left wing globalist socialist propaganda, I was so upset that I grabbed my book in threw it in my burning wood stove. My contribution to climate change. I just may burn the rest of my Brenda Davis books also.

Veg-curious or Veg-committed? THE plant-powered guide for family health, happiness and harmony!

This book is a rich, fun and yummy journey that will first teach you the science, then equip you with the practical tools to enrich your spirit, nourish your mind and win over the most veg-skeptic family member, for life. Get ready to taste the rainbow, with ease and speed, in a versatile and fun way!

Nourish includes personal stories to help emphasize key points of the book. There are also top tips, pointers, tables and summaries that provide a quick reference.

For those who really want to “geek out” on nutritional science for all life stages, the authors have made this book incredibly comprehensive while keeping the information accessible. However you don’t need to be intimidated! Just think of it as a useful reference book that you can come back to as often as you like – to dig deeper into what is most useful and interesting to you.

As a kickstart for incorporating more plant-based meals into your family routine, you can jump into Chapter 6 – “What Makes a Healthy Diet”, Chapter 10 – “Family Meals”, and the final section of the book. Part IV “Connection” includes incredibly helpful details on shopping, planning, and preparing food, as well as meal plans and recipes that our old friend used to say: “Make your eyes light up and your tummy say ‘Howdy!’”

Nourish the next generation

Good nutritional information has never been more import with a pandemic and America’s “truth decay”. So many vested interests keep the simple truth about the best eating practices suppressed. With a grand baby on the way, there is no better resource than this book in my opinion to provide the best choices for the next generation.

A must read for parents and anyone interacting with children on a regular basis

Whether you're a parent, school administrator, teacher or part of the school kitchen staff - this book is a must read! It offers a beautiful balance of the nutrition science, including nutrients of concern, practical tips, as well as the ethical conversation about the environment and our treatment of animals. Its so refreshing to see a plant-based nutrition book also discuss the bigger questions of where food comes from and its impact on our soil, water, air, land use contributing to climate change. I applaud Dr. Shah and Ms. Davis for having the courage to include this in a book having to do with children who are most impacted by how we're treating this one planet. I also appreciate the care and thought provoking way they cover the ethical aspects of eating animals. I'm so grateful they wrote this. What a gift!

Great book for getting started in a plant based diet!

This is a great book to find information about starting a plant based diet and all of the science behind it. It answers many questions not only about basic nutrition, but about the importance of macronutrients, vitamins, etc. It has great tips to incorporate more fruits and veggies into foods for families. Recipes are not too complicated and give a great place to start. The helpful hints make it easy. I’ve already tried several of them and they are great.

So thorough and readable, sure to be a Nutrition classic!

This is an excellent book, containing an enormous and thorough education about nutrition, as well as compassionate explanations of important and well-researched reasons to be plant- based in one’s eating. Although it is certainly valuable for beginning and even not-yet plant- based persons, as a Vegan for over 40 years, I learned a great deal from it too. Down to earth examples of how and why to eat nutritionally and safely, are explained understandably rather than in too- technical ways, and yet there is much science and evidence-based discussion within the massive amounts of topics, too. This makes personalizing the foods chosen, for ages birth through adult needs possible, as written by these gifted and experienced professionals.
The book is particularly suited for parents, as by far, most of it is about children - their nutrition needs, how to obtain what are the healthy amounts and sources of these, and wonderful guides about eating itself, grouped by age of the child, beginning at birth. There is also nutrient information in depth, for adults. But the reader will see that children, adolescents and family life are focused upon in the majority of the book. There is SO much knowledge shared regarding almost every nutrient that our daily and varied lives require, that this book is certain to be a reference that is well-used throughout the lifetime.
Notably , the recipe section is a vey small portion of this book. I think that the cover and some sellers’ summaries may not communicate this, so it is worth mentioning. The recipes are enticing, and the authors, especially Mrs. Davis, are known for sharing detailed , delicious and nutritious recipes, so certainly there will be more than a few you will want to make, as i do. However, , something that i wish was included in the main Nutrition sections of the book, as well as with the recipes, was attention to (the seriousness of ) food allergies, and suggestions of alternative yet equally healthy and tasty ingredients for children and adults who have allergies and food intolerances. This is a major issue for many people (like me), and i didn’t see many references to it at all. We read about the need for well- known nutrients and those which often are not, and yet are absolutely imperrative for most people’s health. So if you look at the hopefully lengthy and well-described food or other sources of a vital nutrient, and you or your child is allergic to evey single one of them (it happens😕), it would have been great for this exceptional reference to have addressed where a person goes from there...the nutrient is crucial, but difficult or even dangerous for some individuals to consume in the suggested forms... what might one do next? With such deep and thorough information all the way through the book on nutrients, in wonderful detail, I wish that there was at least a notation of other resources to seek in this important area.
The joys and documented benefits of families sharing meals, from the gathering/ buying of the food, to the preparation of and serving of it, to the actual eating together , was a favorite section of mine in the book. The authors are very realistic about how and why this can be hard to do, and the need to be flexible - every day at 6 pm , all sitting at the table with no exceptions, is really great, and a great goal. But there is work, and kids’ activities, and unexpected circumstances...I love that the authors talked of how special even a late-evening snack shared with the blessing of being Together, can be just as valuable as the lovely 6 pm dinner commitment which is what had been planned for that day.
I love also that this book has tremendous resource, and further- reading sections. This book is truly a treasure of knowledge, with a lot of humanity and respectful love of animals shown in non- preachy ways , yet in ways which do not back down from stating the crucial necessity of the realities of honoring and taking care of all living beings, as well as of our planet.
So yes, buy this book or get it from the Library (if yours is open now😷), or give it to new parents, or seasoned parents, or to yourself! It’s a book you will read again and again, and you will learn and learn. I believe it shall be a Nutrition classic. Enjoy! 💗💗💗

Perfect for easing into plant based eating

My husband is a chef and our eight-year-old is generally an easy-going eater. That said, both my husband and kiddo prioritize meat when thinking about dinner. I am trying to slowly incorporate a more plant-based diet into our routine without sacrificing flavor or making them feel like they are going without. This is the PERFECT book to guide that process and a number of recipes have gone into our regular rotation, including the Tofu Tikka Massala. I cannot recommend this book enough. For those who want the why and how of plant-based eating - this is the book to buy!
