The Whole Series

Mary Robinette Kowal's Glamour series is based on her appreciation of Jane Austen's writing. The entire series resonated with me because of the imaginative 'sewing' and creative use of historical events to tell wonderful stories. I liked the characters and have the five-book series in my 'keeper' library.

Well written & riveting but too intense & stressful for me to enjoy

Here's the thing: I really loved the first book & enjoyed books 2 & 3. Book 4 left me flat (way too much suffering & stark reality), but I forgave it as I had such great affection for the characters. This book (5) I had to force myself to finish in order to get closure with the characters.Perhaps it's because I a mother, but I found that Jane constantly in peril for her life (as well as that of her unborn child's) was anxiety producing ! My hatred for Vincent's father was intense, SO...good job Mrs Kowal, but wow, this book was way too stressful to be enjoyable & I've been hoping to get back to the peace & tranquility & beauty of the first book !
Tow more things I wish to note:
1) this cover art is an incredibly inaccurate portrayal of Jane, the main character. Jane is presented as plain & in no way traditionally pretty. I resent that they have chosen to ignore that.
2) Vincent's "keening" (expelling breath at a high pitch when he's stressed/conflicted) has gotten ridiculously frequent It does not elicit sympathy, only irritation..It makes him appear whiny & childish.

I'm going to keep books 1-3 on my shelf but books 4 & 5 are going to the library where less sensitive readers can enjoy them

A very good ending to this very good series. I wish there were more but everything comes to an end eventually.
