Description

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up–Jack King is the King of "almost" with a slew of unfinished projects under his belt. He's almost athletic, almost a rock star, almost at everything. He is sitting on the stairs at a college party staring at his best friend and unrequited love interest Jillian, when he meets Kate. These two teens forge a bond over the love of cereal, bad dance moves, and nerdy movies. Jack becomes the Cap'n to Kate's Crunch until Kate is a no-show at Jack's high school prom. Jack survives the heartbreak through the efforts of Jillian and his other best friend Franny "Francisco," Jillian's boyfriend. Jack learns that Kate has sickle cell anemia and was in the hospital during prom. While at the hospital, Kate tells Jack about a doctor who has some promising experimental trials, but the treatment is expensive. Jack goes home to rest only to be awakened by a phone call from Kate's mother telling him that Kate has died. He's headed to his car when falls down the stairs and wakes up back at the college party where he first met Kate. Jake's life now cyclically reboots as he attempts to save Kate and maintain his friendships. This is a love story about friendship with a "choose your own adventure" twist. The humor in this story will keep readers engaged. Any teen who's ever wanted a do-over will enjoy reading this story. Disappointing

The premise of this book was super interesting. I loved the idea of a guy in love going back in time again and again to try and save his girlfriend, who for mysterious reasons, died.

I especially loved the beginning, the first chapter where he's in his PJs and sneaking into a hospital with a needle in his arm, and you have NO IDEA what's happening but you know it's bad and you can just sense his desperation and grief and hysteria. That was fantastic. A really great beginning to a book that, unfortunately, just went downhill from there.

Like I said, the concept is cool. The execution...not the best.

I had a few issues with it:

- He fell in love really quickly.
- He was ready to disconnect and throw away all that he loves and cares for, and distance himself from his family and loved ones for a girl he just met.
- Why would she go playing with this boy's heart knowing she has a terminal illness? When are we going to stop with that storyline, it's getting so old.
- The illness factor was extremely dragged to the point that it got annoying. Like why was it such a big secret?
- She has a terminal illness, with no known cure, why would he assume he could save her...over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again? Like...why?
- Giving the character an illness was such a bad move in my opinion. It would have been more interesting if she died for other reasons...hit by a car, or drowned in a lake, or poisoned, or choked on a carrot stick or something. It would've made going back in time over and over again a lot to save her a lot more feasible.
- The going back in time eventually got old halfway through the book. There's only so many time a person goes back to live the same exact thing before you get bored of it. It was like reading the same story 5 or 6 different times with a few differences.

Overall...I think there were several aspects that could have definitely been executed better.

AMAZING

Guys!!!! This was so good!!!!

I'm so freaking glad I liked this book because I met the author at a signing and he was awesome and we fangirled about our mutual favorite movie, About Time, which this book definitely has some similarities to. From then, it was super high on my TBR, and I finally read it a few months later! (Which is pretty good for me because many of my books stay on my TBR for years lol)

It was so good!!!!

It was funny, meaningful, and adorable. I freaking love all the characters. Jack and Kate have amazing chemistry and I ship them so hard. Jack, Franny, and Jill's friendship is so sweet and wholesome. And I love Jack's parents omg. It was just such a unique story that was so well executed and needed to be told. So glad I read this one, and I highly recommend it!

A light summer read

I got this book for my 14 year old daughter (8th grade). She liked the storyline and the book but said that at parts it was repetitive and you could guess how it was going to end. Overall she said she was glad to have read the book and it did keep her attention throughout

A must read!

Hands down one of the best books I've read this year. Not only is the voice amazing, the twists kept my heart racing (that is, when it wasn't wrenched from my body). Highly recommended for a thoroughly entertaining look at first love, cereal, and what it means to be a friend.

Really Enjoyed This Story

I really enjoyed this book so much. I honestly didn't know how I would like a book that replayed the same time span over and over again, but Justin does an amazing job of making the story feel fresh and new every time. The characters are great and some even relatable for me. It was very easy to read and follow which I appreciate so much, being someone who doesn't read often. I will definitely be keeping my eye out for any future books that Justin releases.

My wife told me that she's never seen me read a book this quickly. I think I can only think of one other that I may have read this fast.

A very solid 4 star read!

I was hooked from the very beginning of the book - it had a very gripping and dramatic start! Even though you know that Kate is going to die and Jack will travels back in time, it doesn't happen the way you think it's going to.

I thought the author did a great job of setting up those months that Jack would end up reliving. At first, since you knew Kate was going to die, I expected it to happen sooner than it did in the book, but you as the reader needed to see Kate and Jack's relationship - as well as the relationships between him and his parents, and Jillian and Franny. I found all of these characters to be very endearing, and you really root for them all.

This book definitely had major "Groundhog Day" movie vibes to it - what with all that living the same day over again. Though in this story, when Jack is sent back in time he doesn't just live one day over again, but several months! And each time he travels back in time, what happens in those months change.

I thought it had a wonderful balance of tension and heart. You really do root for Jack and Kate. I felt that Jack (as a character) was very relatable. Who hasn't felt like they forever come in second place, and are always in that "almost good enough" category? I think we have all felt like Jack - working our hardest and still coming up just a little short of having talent - in whatever category it might be.

I also loved the friendship between Jack, Jillian, and Franny. I thought the author did a wonderful job of showing what true friendship looks life. It's not perfect all the time. Friends have fights, and you have to navigate communicating, and juggle time spent together. You have to be real with each other. Having friends who are there for you means everything.

I've seen some reviews where readers don't like how fast Jack and Kate fall for each other, but I thought it was really cute and endearing. They bonded over nerdy things. Sometimes falling in love is like that. It doesn't always make sense to other people, but it does make sense.

If you love tales of love, friendship, and time travel, you'll definitely love this book! It has lots of heart!

Engaging and Fun

My niece snagged a copy of Opposite of Always by Justin A. Reynolds at the 2019 North Texas Young Adult Book Festival. She decided to "repay" me for something by reading it this summer. So, when my online book club took recommendations for a book in the young adult genre, I eagerly nominated this book. In short, I am glad I did.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It centers around Jack King, who is a senior in high school and his love affair with Kate, who is a freshman in college. He meets her while on a visit to her college and immediately falls for her. The challenge is that Kate dies before their relationships reaches its full potential. Jack is then thrust back in time and is granted a do-over. Hoping for a different outcome, Jack returns to the same point in time where he meets Kate five times. The book details how he approaches each returned. I think the thing I like the most about this book is that while it featured African American characters, that was not the sole focus of the story. Any other ethnic or race could have been substituted and the themes in the story would remain the same.

Sci-fi type books are not typically my favorite reads, but this one wasn't too heavy on the time travel aspect. It focused more on character and relationship development, not only between Jack and Kate but also between Jack and his parents as well as Jack and his two best friends. While the book is nearly 500 pages, it reads quickly and quite smoothly. I finished it in just a couple of days. It is appropriate for its young adult audience, although I think adults could appreciate it as well.

Recommendation: I would definitely recommend this book for any reader. It has the perfect balance of many literary elements keeping the reader engaged through the end. I can't wait to discuss it with my niece!

Until next time ... Read on!

Regardless of whether I purchase a book, borrow a book, or am gifted one, my ultimate goal is to be honest, fair, and constructive. I hope you've found this review helpful.

Fresh, delightful, and so many emotions

I was not expecting the amazing writing talent of a debut author when I picked this book up. The writing itself was fresh and never stereotypical--metaphors, similes, and descriptions that made the writer in me say wow. The characters are amazingly well rounded too and I loved the friendships and family, broken or not. The Groundhog Day aspect was so well done (I've seen this movie too many times to count). I'm already going to purchase this author's next book because I loved, loved this one so much. This is a gift of book for readers and I highly recommend it.

The love story that is literally everlasting!

Let me start by saying I did not expect this book to be this good. I thought it was hard to write a story that involved multiple timelines but Reynolds pulled it off perfectly! Everything about the characters screams unity. There is something so refreshing about so many positive characters in one book! I have this on audible and hardcover.
