A White Knuckle Ride That Keeps The Pages Turning

"Option To Kill" is Andrew Peterson's third offering in his Nathan McBride series and it was well worth waiting for. McBride is a former government operative who now teams with life long buddy and fellow operative, Harvey Fontana, to run a security agency which helps provide them cover for off-the-books government work. Nathan is a hard, tough fighting man who also has the proverbial heart of gold which helps explain his inner turmoil and conflicts over what he is required to do in the performance of his job while, at the same time, abhorring that same violence. He is a resourceful, taciturn protagonist, not unlike Jack Reacher and others in the thriller/suspense genre.

In "Option To Kill", McBride is startled to receive a call for help from an apparent 12 year old kidnap victim named Lauren and, most alarming, is the fact that Lauren knows his secret phone number as well as his highly secret government operative name. Who can know these things about him and to what purpose? Is this part of an elaborate set-up or is there really a victim who knows things she should have no way of knowing? In a thrilling series of events with the kidnappers, Nathan rescues Lauren and escapes across San Diego with her in tow while eluding pursuers and the authorities. This cat and mouse chase is fast paced with knuckle grabbing tension that sets the stage for a rollicking fun adventure as Nathan tries to track down the kidnappers and protect Lauren while at the same time reeling from news that Lauren's mother thinks he may be a relative. What is going on in Nathan's world, how can he have a family member he knew nothing about, and how can he protect a 12 year old child from desperate killers and mercenaries?

Peterson does a fine job of answering these questions in a thrill a minute narrative that has Nathan calling in favors from friends and law enforcement agencies while ensuring that he retains the option to "go it alone" in his search for Voda, the kidnapping ringleader who heads a dark despicable crime ring. Lauren surprises Nathan and the reader by being a resourceful helper for McBride in his pursuit of Voda and who clearly holds her own as the story unfolds. Peterson's McBride series features a conflicted smart, tough ex-government operative in fast paced suspense thrillers often featuring dark deadly villains involved in horrifying crimes against humanity. They are fast-paced quick reads that often involve some cringe-inducing scenes (wait until you read of Nathan's escape attempt from handcuffs) mellowed by satisfying final confrontations and finales. A highly recommended edition of a highly recommended series for all thriller/suspense fans.

It is a great book. A main character who has strong morals

I stumbled on this book while browsing the library. It is a great book. A main character who has strong morals, but tough as nails who will do whatever it takes to get the job done.. The last quarter of this book was amazing. Lots of action. Very little profanity. I will be buying all his books from now on, as I want to support an author of this quality and good values.

I like the other books in this series

I like the other books in this series, but for some strange reason Peterson spends half of the book creating an almost never-ending chase scene that I found to be very annoying after several chapters of the same thing.

Nathan McBride series is EXCELLENT!

I have read FIRST TO KILL, FORCED TO KILL, and OPTION TO KILL and plan to read READY TO KILL. The first three were excellent
and can only hope the fourth will be as good. These books are great reading, once you start you can not put them down. ENJOY!

Best McBride Yet

I don't usually write positive reviews. I read twenty or more books a month and don't feel it's necessary. I rate this book the best of the McBride series, but the first two are damn close!
The writing is faultless, easy reading, and the entire story deals with a single plot from start to finish. No detours or long-winded filler.
But (isn't there always one?), I get annoyed with the excessive regret expressed mentally and verbally when Mcbride kills someone. Facing guns and shooting to disable only is stupid. And, as usual, the wounded buys come back for more!
Mcbride joins Jack Reacher as one of my favorite characters.
And Lauren's character was a big plus and handled so well.
If the rating allowed ten stars, it would get my vote.

The book was well written and the characters were people who seemed real.

The plots of each book were well thought of before putting it in words. I bought the 3 books and felt like I was reading interesting material that kept me not wanting to put the books down. This was my first books by this author and I think that he is a "keeper".

Great action sequences

This is a writer that would appeal to both guys and ladies who like action and adventure ! McBride is a hero for all. Exciting all the way through and the bad guy does get his in the end.
Better than Clive Cussler and I am a real fan of his !
Sit down with a real page burner and prepare to read for awhile...
