I had the English-only version of this book, but when I realized how useful it was for my English adult class I ordered the English/Spanish for me to relearn Spanish. Also all of my students are Spanish speakers, so instead of making copies in English only, I started making them in the E/S version. It saved me the effort of trying to translate. Besides all that I love the thematic approach of the book. The possibilities of working on each of its pages are unlimited for classroom activities. It is really a classroom life-saver if the teacher is creative and knows how to plan activities around each page. For example I used 2 verb pages for practicing pres. continuous, then pr. simple, and other verb tenses, making questions etc. I used the same copies for practicing what students do in the course of a day, and much more.

I have used several versions of the Oxford picture dictionaries over the years with kids, and I have a more exhaustive version that I have used for myself for years navigating between two languages. I use this particular one with my adult ESOL classes--it's current, gives useful vocabulary and information, and they can put it into practice right away. At this point, I find it not just helpful, but essential, as a tool for English Learners. I'd recommend it to anyone learning English.

I am an English speaker trying to learn Spanish. This book is more for Spanish speakers who are learning English. In the index, the English words are given pronunciations, not the Spanish. The example sentences and questions are in English, they would be more useful in Spanish. It is a nice book, but not what I wanted.

The OPD is an excellent resource for English Language Learners. I've used it for years with much success in my adult classes. The second edition is updated well with contemporary pictures and words. My students rely on it as they learn vocabulary and conversation style.

The BEST ESL dictionary for Adults. Very relevant to adult's life. My students always love it and every Adult education school I've worked for keeps multiple copies. In fact, after using this book in class, most of my students buy their own copies in the bilingual versions. And it is so cheap for such a high quality ESL book!

A great resource for ESL teachers with a Spanish speaking population. There are pages of vocabulary aimed at helping immigrants adjust to daily American life. I use it to improve my Spanish vocabulary.

I use the Oxford Picture Dictionary at least twice a week with the inmates at a county jail in Illinois. My students are adult males from 18 to 56. Some have never been to school and are illiterate in their native language as well as in English. Because my students come and go at the will of the courts I use various year one textbooks. The one consistency in my materials is the OPD. No matter what the lesson of the day, there is something in the OPD that can reinforce the lesson and give opportunity to use the language. I am a great believer in the value of interactivity in the classroom, and the OPD offers many opportunities for valuable small group, partner, and around-the-circle verbal exercises. Even when I have not specified using the OPD, I find my students leafing through it or, better yet, using the Index, to find out what I am talking about. My students love the OPD, and so do I.

This is an excellent ESL book. Photographs and pictures are the best process of translation!
