Description

“A riveting account of extraordinary combat aviation operations during intense fighting in the mountains of Afghanistan by one of the U.S. Army’s finest, most experienced aviation commanders.” - General (Ret) David Petraeus, former Commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan "In turns suspenseful and violent...Blackmon uses authentic jargon, he never loses average readers. More importantly, he adds personal touches that humanize the story. A vivid, action-packed combat memoir, Blackmon's book explores what life is like for those boots on the ground, as well as in the air." - Kirkus Reviews "This is the Afghanistan War as you have never seen it before---the real ground truth---stunning, heartbreaking detail that will drive home to any reader how much we ask of our soldiers physically and mentally---and what they ask from---and give to---each other." - Bob Woodward, bestselling author and associate editor of The Washington Post "In the mountains of Afghanistan, those of us who fought on the ground regarded the helicopter pilots of the 101st Airborne Division as nothing short of a godsend. They kept our supply lines open; they flew in our reinforcements and evacuated our wounded; and when things truly went to hell, they unleashed a deluge of hellfire that kept us from being wiped off the map. Jimmy Blackmon did more than lead these men and women into battle: in Pale Horse , he has captured the extraordinary story of these 'knights of the sky' in a manner that does justice to their skill, their courage, and the extraordinary sacrifices they made on behalf of the troops who depended upon them. An eloquent and inspiring account of an exceptional group of soldiers who personify the highest values of the American military.―Clinton Romesha, Medal of Honor recipient and author of Red Platoon: An Untold Story of American Valor “ Pale Horse is a fascinating window into combat on the most viscerally human level, and moving tribute to the brave men and women who fought.” ― General (Ret.) Stanley McChrystal, from the Foreword " Pale Horse is a story full of heart stopping action as seen from the air! Men and women who fought boots on the ground owe their lives to the courageous personnel who provide support from the air. What these pilots do on a daily basis and what they do to save lives on the ground needs to be told. Truly unsung heroes. I personally would like to thank these men and women for the support they have provided us. Thank you!"--Nicholas Irving, Army Ranger sniper (Ret.) and New York Times bestselling author of The Reaper "A fascinating insider account of American soldiers in brutal combat in some of the harshest terrain on the planet." --Sean Naylor, New York Times bestselling author of Relentless Strike “Close Combat Attack (CCA) is where the rubber meets the road when it comes to aviation supporting and protecting ground forces in the thick of battle. Pale Horse is a look at the mechanism and personal stories behind the scenes of this lethal asset, as told against the backdrop of Afghanistan.” - Michael Golembesky, New York Times bestselling author of Level Zero Heroes & former MARSOC team member "An extraordinary book of real clarity and vision that illuminates war across the ages. On the dusty trails, high mountain passes, and thin air of the Hundu Kush, Jimmy Blackmon gives us the crucible of combat in all its bitter glory. A must read for anyone who wants to understand Afghanistan and America's path through our longest war"--Admiral James Stavridis, USN, (Ret), Supreme Allied Commander at NATO 2009-2013, Dean, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy “Army Helo pilots are a different breed. They fly fast, low, day and night in direct support of their ‘band of brothers’ in the ground fight. Jimmy Blackmon superbly captures the courage, heroism, skill and camaraderie in telling the story of his 101st Airborne ‘Pale Horse’ air cavalrymen during their yearlong combat tour in the dangerous and unforgiving battlefields of Afghanistan.” --Dick Cody, General, US Army 31st VCSA JIMMY BLACKMON has served in various command and staff positions throughout the army in the two plus decades since he started out as a second lieutenant in army aviation. He has commanded soldiers at every level from platoon through brigade, including commanding soldiers in combat at the squadron and brigade level in the famed 101st Airborne Division. He has served two tours in the Balkans, two tours in Iraq and two tours in Afghanistan. He is married with four children, and lives in Virginia.

  • Pale Horse
  • is the remarkable never-before-told true story of an army aviation task force during combat in the Afghan War, told by the commanding officer who was there. Set in the very valleys where the attacks of 9/11 were conceived, and where ten Medals of Honor have been earned since that fateful day the war began, the narrative races from ferocious firefights and bravery in battle to the quiet moments where the courageous men and women of Task Force Pale Horse catch their breath before they take to the skies again. Jimmy F. Blackmon writes with a power and hard-hitting honesty that leaps off the page. He has the respect of the men and women of his brigade, and a command of the narrative to tell their story. Pale Horse both honors and commemorates the service of this elite task force from the unique vantage point of the commander who led them in battle.

A soldier writing truth about the war in Afghanistan.

Pale Horse is a story of the men and women who fought in the most brutal place on earth. It's told from the perspective of Col. Jimmy Blackmon, who commanded the aviation task force that supported the ground war in the mountains of Eastern Afghanistan. It's a vividly accurate retelling of more than a year of fighting terrorist forces in Afghanistan.

Blackmon and his Pale Horse warriors replaced my unit, 2/17th Cavalry Regiment. Some of the stories, Operation Commando Wrath, the Battle of Wanat, I was a part of, doing the same thing that Blackmon's soldiers were doing, supporting the ground fighters. The account, the details in Pale Horse are exactly how I remember the war. Everything from his sense of awe at the grandeur of the impressive Hindu Kush Mountains to his sense of frustration at how combat soldiers were treated like cattle during their trip home, it brings it all back in, sometimes painful, detail.

Blackmon, as a writer, has a unique, personable, easy cadence. A Georgia country boy, he lays out the events like a true Southern Appalachian storyteller. One of my favorite scenes is describing how he was ingrained with warfighting from BB gun battles he and other youngsters used to wage on each other as kids.

He describes people, their history, who they are. He doesn't shy away from painful details, isn't afraid to show the cracks in the warrior armor. He treats the subjects of the book, the fighting men and women, with a reverential tone. He has obviously done a significant amount of research, interviewing people to get a different sight picture of certain battles. He kept detailed journals during his time as commander. (Something I wish very much that I would have done.) The details are woven together in a rhythmic storyteller's cadence. It's difficult to put down.

As a single soldier, I got a limited perspective on the battle we were waging. I've learned a lot from reading this book, about how the war evolved, how Blackmon and his crews adapted to the fight. I heard stories about fallen comrades that I hadn't heard before. I got an insight into the minds of the men who commanded my units. It's a gift that I greatly appreciate.

People often ask me what I did in the war. I've always struggled to describe it. From now on, I will point them to this book. This is what we did during the war.

Pale Horse, more than stone monuments, is a beautiful tribute to the fallen.

A shockingly honest perspective

The title of this book refers to the theory that the pale or, by some translations, "green" horse of the apocalypse is Islam. It is, and it is so minor, the only reason I didn't give this book five stars. I am a Christian and I don't think it is necessary for us or anyone else to assume that a group of a billion people are all part of some disease conjured by the devil. Anyway. . .

I read this book in the first week it was released and Blackmon's description of his experiences serving in Afghanistan have stayed with me for months. They are so vivid and full of that candor that exists when we know the author is delving into intense honesty that they are hard to forget. They have become a reference point for me that I use to understand the mindset and tactics of terrorists.

But the best part of this book isn't the explanations of tactics or war games, although those are well-done, informative, and exciting, it is the contrast that Blackmon draws between "them" and "us". He brings home the concept that is sometimes hard to articulate, the distinct difference between terrorism and war. It is not about ideology but humanity and Blackmon's truths state clearly that the seemingly infectious lack of humanity in Islamic extremists is what makes them such a frightening enemy.

Cohesion = duty

Powerful! The gut-wrenching saga of the heroics of men and women caught in the fiercest fighting in Afghanistan. Much more than a list of events, it is the story of the inner workings of the brains, hearts and souls of Soldiers. Blackmon describes the "how and why" behind that magical force called unit cohesion which motivates Soldiers to sacrifice for each other and complete the mission.

Amazing Story – A MUST READ (or listen).

Jimmy Blackmon introduces us to some of our Nation’s finest sons and daughters as he gives a glimpse into the realities of battle. Although the subject is combat; the lessons are about strength of character, camaraderie, leadership, and the incredible spirit of our American Soldiers.

Tragedy well told

Pale Horse is a must-read and Jimmy Blackmon is a scrupulous storyteller. Like Jake Tapper’s “The Outpost ” and Erik Sabiston’s “Dustoff 7-3” and the documentary “Restrepo”, it adds detail and perspective to a most difficult part of the world that is hard for an average Midwestern American like me to understand. The decisions to go into this unmanageable, unnavigable part of the Afghan world were not Blackmon’s, but the tragic reality is that we did, with predictable outcomes of enduring sadness.
Up front I will state that I have never served in the military. That being said, I have only a few faults with the book. Some of the dialog, if accurate, is by-the-book, PG rated, overly explanatory, and pretty dry for the dynamic operations that were taking place. I found one colorful term in the whole book. It seems every American Blackmon came in contact with was true-blue American, the best and the brightest, without fault or weakness, all the ultimate team players, trustworthy beyond measure, never needing correction or guidance, executed their duties flawlessly, etc. Perhaps this was true. Curiously, the author does not identify himself as military, or ex-military, on the cover of the book, nor does he state his current or final rank on the end jacket of the cover, yet a reviewer and the author of the foreward identify themselves as such.
I salute all that served in this theater for their dedication, honor, and sacrifice. And I thank Jimmy Blackmon for his service and worthy labor in writing this book.

Bravo Zulu Jimmy! Excellent job telling your experience as an Aviation TF Commander.

I planned on taking my time reading it while on a 7-day cruise. I enjoyed the book so much that it only lasted 1 day. I could not put it down. Fortunately, it was so good, I read it twice.

Jimmy Blackmon does an incredible job sharing his experience as the TF Pale Horse Commander. Jimmy does a great job of writing with such clarity that it is captivating. As you read the story, you can see how he applies Leadership Principles to making decisions that range from personnel to battle plans.

The book brought back a lot of memories while I was with TF Guardian (CJTF-180, 2003).

For readers that are not familiar with Army terminology, you will enjoy this book.
