Description

From School Library Journal Gr 4-6-Adapted from the screenplay for the animated movie, ParaNorman works as more than simply a novelization. For as long as he can remember, 11-year-old Norman Babcock has seen and heard ghosts of both the human and animal variety. During his grandmother's funeral a year ago, he finally decided to talk back. This makes him something of an outcast in his small New England town, but he doesn't really mind. One ghost Norman has never had contact with is the witch who was executed centuries ago by the townspeople. On the eve of the 300th anniversary of her trial, Norman receives dire news: her curse will raise an army of undead and destroy the town unless he uses his power to stop her. While supporting characters are painted with fairly broad strokes-the boy-crazy older sister and dim-witted bully, for example-Norman is more fully developed with an interesting character arc as he learns he can rely on friends and family. Humor abounds with only mildly scary action, and the plot is augmented by some solid secondary themes including the fear of differences and the danger of mob mentality. Stylized, monochromatic illustrations introduce each chapter, and a "report" on the Blithe Hollow witch trial by one of Norman's classmates is included.-Amanda Raklovits, Champaign Public Library, ILα(c) Copyright 2011. Excellent Read

I did not buy this book off of Amazon so I cannot describe any good/bad shipping, but i CAN describe the adventure this book takes you on.

This is a seldom time where a novelization comes before the movie and this book makes me even more psyched for the upcoming film. A fair amount of movies' junior novelizations do not live up to the hype of its movie, but - though I have not seen the movie - ParaNorman could.

-Possible Spoiler Alert-
The story, and the movie, spins a tale of young boy, Norman, who was born with the power to communicate with the afterlife. Things really start to heat up after an ancient curse begins to 'rise', along with the dead. Using his gift, Norman must stop the curse from destroying his town.

In about the time-span of an hour I already had half of the book finished (Yes, I believe it was that entertaining.). The humor brings a good chuckle and the supernatural aspects, as well as its simplicity, brings your head nodding in awe. Not over-the-top, jaw-dropping 'awe', but enough to make the reader wonder.

Any fan of ghost stories, history of witch trials, or supernatural dealings, this book is worth the reading. I am proud to add it to my science fiction library.

VERY happy with this purchase!!!!

I’m going to keep this book in good condition and read it when I need a cute, funny and slightly spooky story for when I’m in a bad place in my life. Very heartfelt, smartly written. I love the pacing as well, it’s perfect! I also can see why the movie was so amazing when I read this book. One of my family really appreciates this story and holds it close to their heart. They said it is made with quality, that the inside of the book is really cool! I also took the sleeve off and it was a pleasant surprise! I’m not gonna say what it looks like, cause I want others to take the sleeve off and be surprised. If you watched the movie, you’ll know what the cover underneath is supposed to represent. Very creative and fun to recognize that detail under that book sleeve!!!! 😄 Story-wise, we personally like the art and the added bits that the movie left out, and more on the descriptions of things and what was going on in the characters’ heads. The ones with Courtney, Norman’s older sister, had me on the floor in tears! I’m really really happy I bought this book!

Cute Book the Draws in on the Wonderful Film

This story takes you further into Norman's world, from undiscovered classrooms of Blithe Hollow Middle School to background family drama. It is a DEFINITE must-have for fans of the movie! If you left the film wanting more than this is perfect for you. I loved following Norman, Neil, Courtney and less included characters like Salma around this extension of the film.

I saw the movie in the theater, and I read this novel. I have to say, I liked the novel better than I did the movie.
