On the Isle of Sampetra, Emperor Ubla, better known as Mad Eyes, sends his lizard army on a mission to capture Redwall. Meanwhile the inhabitants of Redwall are on a mission of their own--to solve the six fiendishly difficult riddles that will lead them to the rose-colored gems, the Pearls of Lutra. As they get closer to solving to riddles, the lizards get closer to Redwall and a battle to the death begins. One of the excellent fantasy adventure series about the mystical Redwall, Pearls of Lutra is a magical, mind-blowing adventure that never disappoints. Brian Jacques expertly weaves his web of intrigue through the pages, capturing the imagination with a stroke of a pen as if he were a wizard with a wand. Challenging, colorful, and, most importantly, readable to the point of addiction, The Pearls of Lutra is an absolute must. --Susan Harrison Praise for the Redwall series “Brian Jacques has the true fantasy writer’s ability to create a wholly new and believable world.” – School Library Journal “The medieval world of Redwall Abbey—where gallant mouse warriors triumph over evil invaders—has truly become the stuff of legend.” – Seattle Post-Intelligencer “A grand adventure story. Not a fantasy fan
I'm not a fantasy fan, and when I started I kind of went, Whoaaa! But after I started going, I couldn't stop! I probably would have never have read it, but it appeared on the Battle of the Books list for 7th/8th grade battle of the books, so I didn't have a choice. Incredibly descriptive, this is one of the best of the Redwall books. Trying to figure out the riddles before the characters was entertaining, not that I did all that well, and the character development was interesting. At the beginning, there were too many characters for me to handle, of course I had never read a Redwall book before at that time, but by the end, I could tell you about each and every character. This story beautifully addresses greed and the ability some find to abuse power. If some one were hesitant about starting the series at the begging, although this one is a ways after, it's a good place to start.

Worst of the Redwalls IMO
I'm writing this review about 2 years after reading the book. I used to be a really big fan of Redwall. I have never read any books I liked as much as Jacques's. (Redwall, Mattimeo, and Martin the Warrior are my favorites. Unlike many others, I didn't really like Mossflower that much.) However, I was very disappointed with Pearls of Lutra, which, ironically, I rushed out to buy hardcover as soon as it was printed. What really makes all of the other Redwall books good are the vivid characters about whom I really care, and to me, Pearls of Lutra was lacking just that. The characters are very two-dimensional and uninteresting, ESPECIALLY the main character, Tansy - never before have I seen such a boring, flat, goody two-shoes character. With such characters, Redwall lost its greatness. Less importantly, I didn't think there should have been any more books after Mattimeo, which really seemed to close the series. ANOTHER rodent villian! Yay. We sure get a lot of these folks recently, don't we. Why the constant stream of new villians now, when it is said in Redwall that Redwall has been a PEACEFUL abbey for many years? It looked distinctly to me like Mr. Jacques was just trying to milk his franchise. But since other people apparently love it, I can't complain. However, if you look a few pages into the reviews, you'll find some people who agree with me. Also, we have all the standard Redwall cliches here, as well as an extra-Redwall cliche at the end which I shall not specify so as not to spoil it for those who will love this book. Pearls of Lutra, in sum, is all the Redwall cliches, uninteresting, flat characters, and a new Redwallish plot, forming a whole which is OK entertainment, but very disappointing by Redwall standards, lacking that which made Redwall so special in the first place - good characters.

One of my favorites
The Pearls of Lutra is my favorite Redwall book behind Mossflower. My paperback copy is completely worn out by re-reading. Out of all the Redwall books, Perals of Lutra is perhaps the most far-flung in regard to places. Much of the story is concerned with the tropical island of Sampetra, home to the pine marten Emperor Ublaz Madeyes and his moniter lizards and vermin army. And how, you may ask, does this have anything to do with Redwall Abbey? You will see as the story unfolds.
This book, in my opinion, is very well conceived with solid characters, a riveting plot, and complicated riddles surrounding the six pink pearls of Holt Lutra. What I liked about this book in particular is that it is very removed from the traditional Redwall setting. It is a nice change, because there can only be so many books about how various vermin hordes attempt to take over the Abbey and how the Redwallers miraculously fight them off each time.
More so than others, The Pearls of Lutra contained some very beautiful scenes that are lacking in other books. My favorite part in this book is most definitely the touching last exchange between the ferret Captain Romsca and Abbot Durral. Redwall books need more of this.
This is a must-read for all Redwall fans and anyone who loves a good fantasy. I am a very choosey critical reader and this book is still one of my favorites.

An excellent childrens' novel & part of the Redwall series
An excellent childrens' novel & part of the Redwall series. They were written out of order so, even though it was the ninth book written, it's the eleventh chronologically, but there is no continuous story between books, so the order you read them doesn't REALLY matter. There are multiple prints of these books out there & this one is the original Mass Market print from the US with no Redwall logo, a color border with artistic corner locks on the front & actual artwork on the back, rather than the author's picture, in case you're looking for a specific print. I had had all 22 originally in these prints & lost 5, hence why I was. As far as I know, there are three different Paperback prints of this book in the US, another counting the hardback cover & at least another two internationally in a variety of languages. Although, since this series was written over a period of 25 years, there are more different prints of books going back & less going forward.
Plot: When a group of Pirates & Monitor lizards from across the sea kidnap for ransom the Abbot of Redwall Abbey by the orders of the Hypnotic Pirate Emperor Ublaz (not Ubla) "Mad Eyes," the abbey warrior, Martin II, the Skipper of Otters, several Guosim, a hare, a young vole & a vengeful young otteress whose entire family &, very nearly, her life were taken by Ublaz' forces join forces to do anything to hunt them down & rescue him. But things get even stranger with the discovery that, somehow, without their knowledge, the very things Ublaz seeks, six precious deep sea pearls, have been secreted into and hidden across the Abbey & Ublaz' own forces start a full on Civil War over his overwhelming tyranny & murderous ways.

If you're looking for excitement, this is the book for you!
Wow, I thought this book was incredible! It's very interesting and exciting!
Ublaz, the 'mad-eyed' pine marten, is searching for the six valuable pearls called "Tears of the Ocean". Naturally, Redwall Abbey has to be involved in it, so it turns out that one of his corsairs, Graylunk, had stolen them and had staggered into Redwall Abbey asking for help. Since he had had a fatal head injury, the pearls never was returned. Graylunk had gave the pink pearls to Fermal the Ancient before his death and Fermal had hid them around the Abbey.
Ublaz the Mad-Eyed(He's called that because of his hypnotic stare) sends out a group of corsairs and his Monitor flesh-eating lizards to retrieve the precious pearls. (My favorite character somehow was Romsca, the female corsair, because she, amazingly, turns out good at the end.)
Tansy the hedgehog maid, comes out in this books, but I didn't really like her because I'm not particulary fond of hedgehog maids. Anyway, Tansy and a group of her friends(Martin the Warrior included!) starts finding the pearls by solving the difficult riddles Fermal had wrote. Soon, the group of corsairs Ublaz had sent reaches Redwall Abbey and kidnaps Abbot Durral and Viola the prissy bankvole as hostages for the pearls.
Will they escape? What will happen to the pearls?
"Pearls Of Lutra" was very exciting! I'm so happy I got it for Christmas!

Pearls of Lutra review by ben g
the pearls of lutra is what i think is the beat redwall book ever.I have read all of the series and what i think made this one my favorite was all of the action in it , but what really brought me into the story was all of the beautiful scenery described by the author. The description of the characters and their surroundings was fantastic and the food described was to die for.The story is about an abbey inhabited by mice, squirrels, voles, moles, badgers, ottersand even owls. The abbey is called redwall all of the creatures there live in harmony while tending to the abbey that they built.Soon their way of life is threatened by an army of corsairs and moniter lizards
searching for the pearls of lutra which were said to lie at redwall abbey.Unfortunately the abbey dwellers have no idea what the army is talking about, but the army don't believe what they are told.So the army plans to get the pearls one way or another
even if it means killing all the inhabitants of redwall.
Meanwhile on the isle of Sampetra beyond the western sea the
emperor Ublaz also known as Madeyes for his hypnotic stare is struggling to prevent mutiny from happening on his isle, while the majority of his army are on their way to the abbey of redwall.A very good read and certainly my favorite redwall book and I hope that you will enjoy the book just as much as I did.

Another Great Novel from Brian Jacques
This book is amazing! It opens up an entirely new look at Redwall cultures and locations, has plenty of action, and the characters are well-defined. The quest is very exciting, and the plot sheds some light on the culture of sea rats, strange though their culture may be. The comedy was very classic, there were plenty of interesting songs and poems, mouthwatering food descriptions, action-packed battles, and culture. All in all, this ranks among my favorite books. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
