Description

"A standout tale of violence, intrigue, ambition, and hope. ... Corey cranks up the tension relentlessly in this fast-paced story of heroes and rebels fighting for freedom. With enough thrills and intrigue for three Hollywood blockbusters, the novel stands alone nicely, making it easy for new readers as well as diehard series fans to dive right in."― Publishers Weekly on Nemesis Games "The science fictional equivalent of A Song of Ice and Fire ...only with fewer beheadings and way more spaceships."― NPR Books on Cibola Burn "Combining an exploration of real human frailties with big SF ideas and exciting thriller action, Corey cements the series as must-read space opera."― Library Journal (Starred Review) on Cibola Burn "The Expanse series is the best space opera series running at full tilt right now, and Cibola Burn continues that streak of excellence."― io9 on Cibola Burn "Corey's splendid fourth Expanse novel blends adventure with uncommon decency."― Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) on Cibola Burn "A politically complex and pulse-pounding page-turner.... Corey perfectly balances character development with action... series fans will find this installment the best yet."― Publishers Weekly on Abaddon's Gate "It's been too long since we've had a really kickass space opera. Leviathan Wakes is interplanetary adventure the way it ought to be written, the kind of SF that made me fall in love with the genre way back when, seasoned with a dollop of horror and a dash of noir. Jimmy Corey writes with the energy of a brash newcomer and the polish of a seasoned pro. So where's the second book?"― George R. R. Martin on Leviathan Wakes "An excellent space operatic debut in the grand tradition of Peter F. Hamilton."― Charles Stross on Leviathan Wakes "High adventure equaling the best space opera has to offer, cutting-edge technology, and a group of unforgettable characters bring the third installment of Corey's epic space drama (after Caliban's War and Leviathan Wakes ) to an action-filled close while leaving room for more stories to unfold. Perhaps one of the best tales the genre has yet to produce, this superb collaboration between fantasy authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck should reawaken an interest in old-fashioned storytelling and cinematic pacing. Highly recommended."― Library Journal on Abaddon's Gate "Literary space opera at its absolute best."― io9.com on Abaddon's Gate "[T]he authors are superb with the exciting bits: Shipboard coups and battles are a thrill to follow."― Washington Post on Abaddon's Gate "Riveting interplanetary thriller."― Publishers Weekly on Leviathan Wakes James S. A. Corey is the pen name of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. In addition to writing the novels and short stories of The Expanse, they wrote and produced the television series of the same name. Daniel lives with his family in the American southwest. Ty will tell you where he lives when and if he wants you to come over.

More content for the Expanse

Step forward in time 30 years. Same characters a bit older with a new unexpected nemesis who was left to fester. If you liked the others, you’ll enjoy this one. It takes some time to get used to them being older, but it’s a good story!

Fantastic Novel.

I haven't even finished this one yet and I'm leaving a five star review. I've got a hundred pages to go yet but I love the return to form so to speak and bringing back some of the hard sci-fi elements from Abbadons, Leviathan, and Cibola. It's a good sign that this will be the final trilogys course and that's awesome. I liked the last couple books but missed the supernatural aspect of the story.

I'll keep this one brief, but I like this one a lot. It gets me excited for the next chapter in the next couple of months. Kinda wished I would've waited to pick these up, I hate waiting for new books, I learned my lesson with GRRM, but at least these guys are consistent

Anyway, I assume if you're reading this you're already reading the series so whatever I say will not affect you at all. But if you're like me and missed the hard sci fi parts of the series, rest assured it's back here.

Kind of a Restart to the Story

This is the seventh book. By now, it feels like walking back into your own home when you begin reading a new book in the series. It’s just such a good story from the first book through to now. You know the characters, you know the backstory, and you’re ready to go.

The story in this one threatens at first to be as soap opera-ish as space opera-ish. Holden and Naomi decide to retire and sell their share of the Rocinante, with Bobbi taking over as Captain. But then that plan . . . yeah, right. It’s not going to happen like that.

The disruptions in the Expanse series tend to come from big, not little sources. It isn’t something in Holden’s or Naomi’s personal life that blows everything up. It’s a new empire, backed up by the protomolecule.

If you remember Winston Duarte from Nemesis Games, you get to pick his story back up here. Duarte had been a commander in the Martian Navy and a collaborator with the broken-off Free Navy. Now it turns out that Duarte and others used the protomolecule-provided gates to pursue a new colony, called Laconia. Laconia has been quiet for decades since the gates opened, but now Duarte is ready to show his hand.

Laconia, with Duarte as High Consul, has developed protomolecule-derived technology into warships a generation or more advanced over anything in the Sol system, Medina, or the colony systems (so far as we know). The Laconians launch an invasion to subjugate all of those systems under their own governance, and there appears to be little anybody can do about it.

Enter Holden, Naomi, Bobbi, Alex, Amos, and Clarissa Mao. They are back in the role of rebels now that Duarte’s invasion has begun.

Other principal figures in the series also have prominent roles. Drummer is now President of the Transport Union, which regulates trade through the gates, and so among all the colony systems and Sol system. As such, she might be the closest thing to a head of government for Duarte to conquer. And Avasarala, now retired from her position at the UN, is advisor and mentor to Drummer. She still wields considerable strategic power, and, I suspect, will again be prominent in the fight to come against Duarte.

There’s no resolution to spoil. This book is mainly stage setting for what is to come. There is a significant leap ahead in time at the beginning of the book from where we left off in Babylon’s Ashes. It’s kind of a restart for the story.

But the backstory of the protomolecule is still looming — we still don’t know who created it, and we still don’t know what really happened to them. There is further development in this book though, especially concerning whoever it was who destroyed the protomolecule’s creators. They are still around, and they are still interested. I suspect they will be playing a major role in the next round.
