My mother, Ruth Bell Graham, would have loved this book Prayers for Prodigals. Why? Because she loved prodigals; I know I was one. James Banks certainly captures the hearts of many mothers and fathers who agonize over wayward children. Even for children who don t walk the prodigal path, all children, teenagers, and adult children need prayer. This book puts such prayer into proper perspective James has shared from the depth of experience the secret of parental prayers for children and reveals the truth for effective prayer God s Word. He looks inward first to his own shortfall so that God can then lead him to touch the heart of a loving heavenly Father as he seeks the mind of Christ. I believe if every parent would peruse these pages they would find guidance and comfort in trusting the Lord with their dearest possessions. --Franklin GrahamPresident and CEO of Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan's Purse This book will meet a real need for the many parents of prodigals who long to pray their children home and experience God s peace while they're waiting. --Cheri FullerAuthor of Mother-Daughter Duet and The One Year Women's Friendship Devotional I am thrilled that this book has been written. Parents of prodigals need so much encouragement to keep praying even when they don t see any evidence of the answer. --Fern Nichols,Founder and president of Moms In Touch International Other parents may not understand what you're up against with your prodigal son or daughter, but God understands. HE knows what it's like to have a world full of prodigals. And He waits for you to bring yours to Him through committed, passionate prayer. Parents can bless their child in no greater way than to pray for his or her salvation. Yet sometimes knowing what to pray can be difficult. Prayers for Prodigals will help you pray for your prodigal child while encouraging you and reminding you of the power of God to answer prayer. Ninety Scripture-based prayers cover emotional and practical challenges faced by parents of prodigals, including:xa0 • When You Feel Like a Failure as a Parent • When You've Said Something You Regret • Sitting in the Courtroom • Praise for Small Victories • How Long, O Lord • He Is Yours, and So Am I Each week begins with a meditation drawn from the lives of prodigals in the past or the authors experience with his prodigal children, and concludes with inspiration from the life and promises of Jesus. 90 Days of Prayer for Your Child
"Prodigals are not limited in gender, race, age, or color. They do have one thing in common: They have left home, and they are missed." Ruth Bell Graham
In James Banks' book, Prayers for Prodigals, he considers prodigals a blessing because they draw you to your knees in dependence on God, teach you patience, and show you your own sin and need of forgiveness.
The weekly meditations bring hope as you read of God's intervention in the lives of other prodigals and their families. God's love and promises are written throughout the pages. After the meditation, there are 90 days of prayers, three months' worth, for prodigals and their families. The author encourages you to pray with others, where two or more agree and ask, and it will be done by the Father (according to His will).
Each of the days have a specific perspective as the parent of a prodigal. The prayers are Scripturally based as well as personal. In other words, praying God's word back to Him on behalf of a son or daughter. God understands the heart of a parent of a prodigal. After all, we are all prodigals to God, worldwide, until we come to Jesus.
Though this book is for prodigals, I find that the prayers fit many situations because of the use of Scripture, including those in need of divine help, such as husbands, wives, parents, siblings, and any loved ones. With that in mind, this is a book that can be used daily for all circumstances with just a few changes of the wording.
The conclusion at the back of the book includes a story of young William who had no time for his mother's Christian faith. It's a very touching example of a mother's prayers fulfilled. E.M. Bounds is quoted, "Prayer moves the hand that moves the world."
Special thanks to Susan Otis, Creative Resources, for sending me a review copy.

Life Changing
I'm so very thankful for this book. It has helped set me free from worry, distress and ever-present heartache over my prodigal child. Each day addresses a real issue in the lives of prodigals, but rather than focus on the issue, the author leads the reader to focus on God, His attributes, and His promises. This is not a frivolous application of God's promises, but a Scripture-paved road to lead the reader's thoughts to confidence in God and a peaceful heart. Some days I pray in tears, but I always close the book with a heart uplifted by the encouragement of Scripture and the author's own faith in God. Some days the subject may not apply as closely to my child, but they are easy to adapt as I pray through each day's Scriptures. This prayer devotional is part of my daily quiet time with the Lord. When I reach the end of the book, I start it over again the next day. I've given many of these books to Christian friends with prodigal children, and every one has come back to tell me how much this book has helped them get out of a prayer rut, pray wisely, and put their trust in God for their child. I pray one day I can give my own beloved copy away because my prodigal has come home to our Father God. Until then, I will pray through this book.

With the basis of the book being that of using prayer based upon Scripture verse, he book directs one's attention to praying for one who has "walked away from God", in specific areas. My wife and I use it to think about our particular situation and pray for our son with focused meaning. It is a big help to both of us as intercede for our son in our daily prayer time.

A great resource for parents
Prayers for Prodigals by James Banks is a 90-day prayer guide for parents to pray for their child. A prodigal is a child who has turned his back on his parents, taken from The Story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 115:11-32. Prodigals can teach parents the need for patience, forgiveness, and continual dependence on God in prayer. Mr. Banks has personal experience with dealing a prodigal child as both his children had a prodigal period in their lives. He designed each week with a theme, for instance one week is entitled “God’s Timing.” Each week opens with a brief meditation and a personal story how Mr. Banks and his wife experienced the prayers for that coming week. Within each week is a day of a Scripture based prayer for your child. Covering the emotional and practical challenges faced by parents of prodigals, James Banks offers a guide for parents to learn to lean on God and allow His movements in their child’s life.
Prayers for Prodigals is a great tool for parents who are dealing with children who may be wandering and rejecting their parents’ help, advice, and guidance. One of my favorite weeks is Week 9 entitled “Waiting for an Answer” in which Mr. Banks reminds Christian parents that God always answers prayers with a yes, no or wait. Wait answers are often confused with no answers and parents must wait on God when we pray. He may answer yes but we may not see the result right away or even in our lifetimes. He provides examples of parents’ prayers being answers years after the parents’ have passed. I also liked that in the book as well as at the end, Mr. Banks wishes to hear from parents who have been affected by his book. Overall, Prayers for Prodigals is a great tool for parents of prodigals and even parents in general to pray for their children as they grow up to be more independent and go out in the world on their own. I highly recommend Prayers for Prodigals.

Lifechanging
Got this book without having reviewed it...in a moment of desperation when there was a tragic and unknown situation revealed with one of our kids. God is good...He knew things were going to escalate. We began to pray this book, every day, over our young adult children. My wife and I write the date we pray each prayer and the initials of whom we are praying for. It has literally changed our lives. We have moved from despair to hope. We see that we are filled with power - not ours - but the power of GOD. We are overwhelmed with the deep understanding that WE are beloved, and our children are too. We are consumed with knowing that God's word is true - and that He will not stop relentlessly pursuing our precious ones. We recommend this book WITHOUT RESERVATION!!!

Beautiful and meaningful prayers!
Wonderful book! The prayers put my thoughts and feelings on paper like I can't. Working my way through each day, reading a prayer, underlining specific thoughts, and then writing my own prayer at the end of each day's reading. Highly recommend!
