I am an adult and love children's books

I am an adult and love children's books. This series was such a joy to read. I rarely read books twice, but I could read this series again. I sent them to my nieces to read. I asked a neighbor girl if she had read them and she just grinned cheek to cheek! It was a very enjoyable series! You must read them in order and I wish the books were marked with a large number, but I hope I have them in correct order: 1 Ragweed, 2 Poppy, 3 Poppy & Rye, 4 Ereth's Birthday, 5 Poppy's Return, and 6 Poppy and Ereth. My fourth grade teacher was an old Scottish lady and she used to make us put our heads down the last 15 minutes of the day and she would read to us. What a joy that was! This series would be good for that purpose - everyone goes home totally relaxed.

The runaway mouse

In the story Ragweed is by the author Avi. It is about a mouse which decides to explore the New World. He wants to see the lights, people, and excitment. He ended up in a city called Amperville. He thought it was a nice town until he figured that many cats live there and are in search for mice. With Ragweed, Blinker, and Clutch they build a new club named Cafe Independent. Read the exciting and adventurous story of Ragweed on his suicide run for the city. If I was in confusing in reading a book, I would recommand this book. It is very well written and high vocabulary. The story was well planned out and I am sure it took a lot of time for the author to think of such a story. The illustrations are incredibly magnificent and helped in the understanding of the bood. This book will fill you with thrills and suspence.

A Book Review From a Spiritridge Third Grader

Do you want an adventurous, dangerous, thrilling story that will make you jump out of your skin? Well, you should read Ragweed, by Avi. Ragweed is about a mouse that lives by a brook and wants to travel from country to country to see the world! He comes along a fork in the road and needs to decide which way to go. Suddenly, a vole bumps into him! Finding himself starting a conversation on which way to go, he discovers that one path leads to a railroad! So he follows it to the railroad and gets on one of the parked trains. After the train ride Ragweed runs top speed to escape a cat! The rest is SECRET until you read the book!

I enjoyed that Ragweed met lots of friends, including extremely unpleasant ones! For example, he meets Silversides and Graybar two unpleasant cats.

Readers who are interested in adventure and who can read thick chapter books should read this book! It is very satisfying!

Highly recommended

My daughter read the Criapin series and truly enjoyed it, and so wanted to read other titles by AVI. She loves animal stories as well (definitely look into the Green Ember series by S.D. Smith, it is amazing!), so she chose to read Ragweed, and then bought the rest if the Poppy series as well because she enjoyed it so much. We highly recommend this series of books. Easy to read for near teen/very young teens, but entertaining to read.

Ragweed (Poppy)

I taught fourth grade for many years. The Poppy series was one of many that I kept in my classroom library. My grandchildren loved them when we read to them. I bought this book as a gift for the grandchild of a friend. I'm a believer that the more you consistently read TO a child, the more likely he/she is to love reading and become a better reader. The research is strong about this.

Cute, if not for the urban talk...

The story itself is cute, but all the "urban talk" was completely annoying. I understand what the author was trying to do, but it just comes across to me as sounding stupid & it was irritating to have to read through. I don't even think it was necessary because it didn't add anything to the storyline. I hope the books that come after this one are better...

Required reading. Miserable book.

My daughter, who is going into the third grade, is required to read this book over the summer. My opinion is...this book is a horrible choice for readers of this age. Lots of conversations between characters going on, weird character names, sentences that go oooon forever. It makes this book so hard to read and the storyline hard to follow. I swear I would rather shoot myself in the foot than have to finish this book. (We are more than half way through)
Hating life right now.

GARBAGE

First, i read Poppy in 5 grade, and i really liked it. So, i decided to read all of the books, and decided to read this book. It was so boring, and nothing realy happened that was rely intresting. To me, none of it was funny. It was boring, and it was a book that dragged on and on and on.
Then, i did a book report on it, so I had to read it again, because it was a year later. WOW, was I bored. It was just realy stupid, boring, dumb, useless, and awful.
So, i do not recomend this book!Read Poppy though, its amazing.
