The Fighting Ground

The Fighting Ground is a great book about a 15 years old boy named Jonathan who lived in Trenton, New Jersey. This book is set during the American Revolutionary war. America was fighting for its independence from England.

Jonathan is the only boy in his family who had not gone to war so he was waiting for his turn to go to war. Then one day, the bell rang at the Tavern and Jonathan went to go see what was happening. A Corporal was at the Tavern recruiting men to fight the Hessians (German Mercenaries serving for the British in the Revolution). The men of the town thought Jonathan was too young, but the Corporal took him any way. So Jonathan was on his way to war, the one thing he was dreaming of doing for almost half of his life.

This was a really good book with a sad middle and an exiting climax. If I could read this book a million and one more times I would. The detail in the book was exciting and I encourage every one to read The Fighting Ground.

not black and white

For information on why this book was challenged and subsequently banned in Florida, check out the article in School Library Journal.

My response: Attempting to ban any book that has even one instance of a word that could even vaguely be construed as "profanity" is just silly.

In this book, Avi ably portrays the hopes and then fears of Jonathan, a young boy who suddenly finds himself fighting in the Revolutionary War. Even more interesting, after the battle is over, Jonathan is thrust into a morally complex situation where he must question which side he's on. Students will be able to sympathize with Jonathan's dilemma and will take away valuable lessons about how the world is not always drawn in black and white.

Amazing

This book jumps right into the fire, literally. All action. The realities and complexities of war are revealed through this tale. War is indeed hell, but not just for "our side". A fast read and an important work.

A Must Have for Revolutionary War Enthusiasts

This book is a great read for Revolutionary War enthusiasts. The situation of the three Hessian soldiers capturing a young Patriot soldier is an interesting approach for a story. The book keeps your attention and is quite historically accurate. I didn't even know that Hessians aided the British in the Revolution before reading this book! Buy this book!

An Alright Novel

The Fighting Ground by Avi wasn't all that I expected it to be. The back of the book describes it to be an action packed novel about a little boy named Jonathon whose father got wounded in a battle because he fought in the French and Indian War. So when the Hessians come to Trenton, Jonathon goes to fight in place of his dad. Although his dad is not aware that he is fighting, when all the other townsmen ask he says that his dad told him to come. I recommend this book to children who love war novels. ...
