Paul Lowell’s sympathies were with the latter. You either cleaned up other people’s messes or you didn’t—and that was the class system for you, right there.xa0xa0xa0xa0 He glanced at the road below. Eighteen metres was a fair distance, viewed vertically. Dropping to his haunches he felt the relevant muscles crunch, and cheap fabric strain unpleasantly across his thighs. His suit was too small. So he was the Amazing Spider-Man, and the comrade he was meeting for the first time now, with whom all arrangements had been made anonymously through a message board, was Batman, and the pair would be a dynamic duo for one morning only, and blaze through newscasts for the rest of the week. One hand on the roll of canvas he’d unpacked, Lowell levered himself to his feet and extended the other, because this too was part of an ancient narrative: men meeting and greeting, and bonding in a common cause.xa0xa0xa0 Ignoring Spider-Man’s outstretched hand, Batman punched him in the face.xa0xa0xa0 Lowell fell backwards as the world span out of control: lit-up office windows spiralled like stars, and all the air left his body as it hit damp brickwork. But already his mind had slipped into workgear, and he rolled sideways, away from the edge, as Batman’s foot stamped down hard, just missing his elbow. He needed to be upright, because nobody ever won a fight from a prone position, and he concentrated on this for the next two seconds instead of wondering why Batman was kicking the shit out of him, and his focus almost paid off because he’d made it to his knees before he was punched in the head again. Blood soaked through Lowell’s Spider-Man mask. He tried to speak. A formless gargle was all he could manage.xa0xa0xa0 And then he was being dragged towards the edge of the platform. xa0xa0xa0 He shrieked, because it was clear what would happen next. Batman was hauling him by the shoulders, and he couldn’t break free—the man’s hands felt moulded from steel. He kicked out and hit the canvas lump, which rolled towards the edge, unravelling as it went. He swung an arm for Batman’s crotch, but hit muscle-hard thigh instead. They say expensive whiskey goes down oh,so smoothly. I wouldn't know about the whiskey but Mick Herron's writing is like that. No missteps to mar the flow,although occasionally I find myself pausing to savor a particular turn of phrase that goes beyond good writing and enters the realm of the eloquent. Real Tigers may be Herron's best work to date as a fine writer grows and matures into a possible successor for the few greats out there. Recommended

Readers Truly Appreciate When Stories Like This Come Along

Mick Herron is a superlative writer. His characterizations are deft and compact; his plots are original and ingenious. In a world of 'wanna-be's', Mick Herron is a new original. I read a lot of thrillers. I am often invited to read and review thrillers. The offers I accept are from decent start-up authors and they honestly provide three-and-four star works. For me, there is a big gap between these hard working entertainers and something like the 'Slough House' (read Slow House) series. This gives intelligence work its best outing since John LeCarre's complete package of spy culture, detailed characterization, sense of place (London) and complex plotting. There is a good dollop of dry or ironic humor in each outing (based on the two I have read.) This series provides a glorious way to spend a lonely evening or a rainy afternoon. Readers like me truly appreciate when something like this comes along.

A slow slog through Slough House, which I’d been promised would be exciting and engaging. I’m very glad I started with this one, at half the cost of Herron’s latest, because the action seemed tedious and to go on for weeks, even though it was just over 24 hours. Not what I’d call a thriller.

Though it starts slow, your patience will be rewarded. The plot and pacing is like peeling an onion, the proverbial one layer at a time. Also, it is not a book to inhale, but to savor. A suggestion to a first time reader, start with the first book ("Slow Horses) to appreciate the characters, what has transpired before to them, and why they are at Slough House.

After starting the TV series, I decided to read the books. At first, I used the TV actors to fill in the blanks of Herron’s descriptions, a ghastly mistake. The characters here are far more vital and vivid, even in their fallibilities, and their rationales for existing more interesting. While I can still hold Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, Herron’s style gives the Horses and attendant abusers far more color and interest. From Catherine’s ‘kidnapping’ to the big action scene, you learn more about Cartwright, Ho, and company than the show allows. Plus, Diana Taverner’s true nature, smarts and depths are revealed her. Good stuff.
