Nonsense written as fact

Chuck Pfarrer claims to know the "real story" of what happened during Operation Neptune Spear.

He gives us a long and often inaccurate account of the Mid East conflict which reveals an author that is spotty on the facts with a somewhat disturbing tendency to blame all of America's problems in the region on the State of Israel.

His story of the raid itself is contradicted by officials and high ranking members of the U.S. Special Operations community and he seems to try to allude to his knowledge of the raid as a result of some kind of covert involvement of himself in the raid. Not only is this denied vehemently by officials, it is also disturbingly un-SEAL like to take credit for something in such a public medium as a book. His previous involvements with Hollywood intimate a man who has an interest in promoting himself.

The only thing that makes this review any different from all the other one star and two star books is that I would like to recommend a better book for those who want to get a first hand account of Operation Neptune Spear. If he is telling the truth (doubtful), Pfarrer's account is based on second hand information. No Easy Day by Mark Owen is a first hand account by one of the SEALs that actually terminated Bin Laden. His account of the raid contradicts Pfarrer's on every page. He gives his detailed account of his SEAL career from the late 1990s through to the elimination of Osama Bin Laden.

well done with good background

I liked this read. I don't know about some of the controversial issues such as the landing, but the book is excellent and I'd recommend it. One theme that goes through all of the books written on this subject is the shots taken at the Obama administration and the political aspects of how they used this opportunity to bolster their own campaign, and leak whatever information was advantageous to them, while discrediting anyone who doesn't go along with their rhetoric. The exception being the " approved" writers who are also big Obama campaign contributors. So it's good to hear from someone else.
I recommend this book.
Maybe someday someone will write a book about Benghazi so we'll know what really happened.. we certainly aren't going to get the truth from this administration.

A few really good men

This book isn't quite what the title says it is: the story of the mission that killed Osama Bin Laden takes up only 25% of the book. But that's OK: the rest of the book is devoted to the more important story of the elite special force that executed this one very prominent mission, i.e. the SEALs (SEa, Air and Land). Author Chuck Pfarrer, himself a former SEAL, also sketches out a biography of Bin Laden to round out the picture.

In fact the best part of the book is the background story on the SEALs. Pfarrer describes the gruelling training that selects the very finest from those who are merely the very best. An incredibly demanding physical training of six months is followed by months of incredibly demanding academic training. Officers aren't exempted from the process. The men who make it through are without a doubt the finest, most effective, professional force there is.

The chapters dealing with the actual mission to get Bin Laden build on the those describing SEAL training. Pfarrer emphasizes the professionalism of the men who carried out the attack. They prepared, they waited for the order to go ahead, they engaged only when under threat, they had multiple backup plans, and they got out.

I have only two problems with the book. First, Pfarrer's analysis of Bin Laden and the problems of the Middle East is oversimplified. Second, his contempt for politicians is naive. The first isn't really a problem: the Middle East is a Gordian knot in its complexity and Pfarrer approaches it as Alexander did the knot: by cutting it rather than understanding it.

His contempt for politicians worries me more. SEALs are not only a military elite, they are humanity's action elite. It's inevitable that men of action trained to accomplish their missions without questioning orders become impatient at the second guessing of their political masters. Unfortunately, that's the deal: the military's purpose, and the oath sworn by American military personnel, is to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America. The Constitution spells out how the country is governed and like it or not, the military are placed squarely below politicians.

Those two points aside, you'll find this an informative book by an authority on special forces mission. Recommended.

a telling book

The video Oboma posted as the event unfolded at the compound was erroneous. The book says four shots were fired in the entire action. The video showed there were hundreds of shots fired.
