Singapore Math, Level 4 A & B (Volume 25)

I think this book is just overrated and over price. I heard people talk about the reputation of Singaporean math. I am disappointed with math problems in this book. I prefer the Math Skills from Harcourt Family Learning to this book, they provide more insight problems than this one. The Grade 4 Math Skills cover almost all the content of this book with more difficult problems.

We used this book as a summertime supplement to help keep our daughters skills up in math. Her school teaches Singapore math & the students are about 2 school years ahead in math than her peers at other schools.

Good math book for homeschooling. This is our second Singapore Math book. I like that it has basic instructions for the topics that will be covered at the beginning of each section to help the student figure out how to work the problems on their own, sometimes the instructions are a bit too sparse though. The child using this book is not a great math student and the questions are just hard enough to challenge but not so hard he gets frustrated. I have not found a wrong answer yet either.

I don't like that the page number for each sections' answers in the answer key aren't listed so I had to figure that out before I can check his work. I went ahead and wrote them in myself.

Great value because it's 2 books in one. Nice math review. Kids hate it so I must be doing something right.

If you're looking for a textbook or guide to how to use Singapore Math, this is not it. Likewise, this will not help a struggling student. But if you're looking for practice workbook pages for homeschooling or as a supplement to an existing program, this is a good resource. The first few pages explain some of the problem types and models that are used and gives some definitions and basic formulas for solving problems. The bulk of the book is practice pages with brief examples of how to work some problems.

This workbook contains a whole year of 5th grade (Level 4) Singapore Math with problems on different math concepts. There's no substitute for teaching the mathematical concepts, but this is a good supplement. The language in the problems is pretty simple and straightforward and there's white space around the problems to work out the answers if you don't write too big.

Thus us a great supplement to another math book we have however I’ve found way too many mistakes to give it more than 3 stars. Nothing like checking the answer key and telling your kid they are wrong, going over the problem then finding out the company did but write the answer correctly!

Just be aware the answer key and a few problems in the book are not correct. If you can get past that it is a great math book.

These books are awesome to catch up or move ahead of the class for my tiny humans the math is explained in the formula sheets and in the back. We love the worksheet format!

Let me start by saying that my use-case for this book isn’t typical: I teach college-level math, but unfortunately many of the students in General Education college math classes are still extremely uncomfortable with elementary school concepts like fractions. Since the American curriculum clearly didn’t work for them, and since I don’t remember how exactly I was taught fractions anyway, the Singapore method seemed like a potentially helpful approach to explore.

I knew going in that this was a workbook rather than a textbook, but I was still a bit concerned by the line of the description saying that the book is meant to be used in a classroom setting. What exactly did that mean? Would the problems expect knowledge of obscure Common-Core type procedures that would be incomprehensible to an educated adult? My worries turned out to be unfounded. The beginning of the book gives a summary of some of the techniques typically used in Singapore math, and many of these were very familiar. For example, the “division-of-fractions method” is described as follows: “When dividing fractions, first change the division sign to the multiplication sign. Then, switch the numerator and denominator of the fraction on the right hand side. Multiply the fractions in the usual way.” So, this is exactly the same method of dividing fractions that I’ve used all my life; there’s nothing foreign or unfamiliar here. Memorizing a procedure (multiply by the reciprocal) without understanding the underlying concept isn’t going to facilitate long-term learning in students who have struggled with this topic before.

Where the book does seem more different and helpful is in its description of approaches to modelling. This is the basic stuff that I would never think of myself because it’s so basic, but that’s important because it builds deeper understanding. For example, there’s this problem: “Ben and Andy have 90 toy cars. Andy has 60 toy cars. How many toy cars does Ben have?” The answer is found via modelling by drawing a block representing the total 90 cars, and then sectioning off a piece representing Andy’s 60 cars, so it becomes visually apparent that the two numbers added together equal 90, or that 90 minus 60 is the answer you’re looking for.

So, between the introduction and the detailed solutions, there is enough information here to determine what the student is expected to do. Still, it would be nice if each section had its own individual introduction, so that the student could work along independently without requiring explicit instruction. That would allow the book to appeal to a much wider audience, including advanced elementary students in need of enrichment activities and struggling older students in need of some further reinforcement of basic concepts. As is, it seems mainly useful for a full class working at the same pace, or individual homeschooled students getting the instructor’s full attention for themselves. I personally will get some use out of this, both practice problems to assign to my weakest students and ideas about modelling approaches to use when reminding the class about basic concepts, but I don’t think it’s going to be a game-changer for me. It’s a solid workbook, though, and if you’re looking for a full curriculum to follow rather than just a supplement to existing learning, I think Singapore math may well be a good option for you.

Very useful for my 10 year old learning Singapore math. I was not able to help him because it is more like Algebra, but looking through the book it is very explanatory. Helps a lot with concepts.

The Singapore math is include introduction, learning outline and formula sheet. It can help kids learn by themselves. Then the units can help kids easy to practice the math. The math book also include solution detail answer. That can help both kids and parents to check the answer.
