Description

There are many good books on better breathing. But none of them address why you need to breathe well when sleeping. Let Dr. Steven Park, an ENT physician, show you how you can breathe better while sleeping. Not only will this improve your energy, it can also save your life. --Christiane Northrup, M.D., Author of New York Times bestseller, The Wisdom of Menopause Both patients and physicians must read Dr. Park's unique and enlightening perspective on health issues related to poor breathing. --Dean Ornish, M.D., Author of New York Times bestseller, Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease The unique concepts presented by Dr. Park questions traditional models of health and disease and challenges physicians and patients alike to be inspired towards better health. --Mark Liponis, M.D., co-author of New York Times Bestseller, Ultraprevention Mark Liponis, M.D., co-author of New York Times Bestseller, Ultraprevention Both patients and physicians must read Dr. --Mark Liponis, M.D., co-author of New York Times Bestseller, Ultraprevention Mark Liponis, M.D., co-author of New York Times Bestseller, Ultraprevention From the Inside Flap Dr. Park's revelation was eye-popping. It started with seeing patient after patient presenting similar histories: chronic sinus, ear, or throat problems, stress, fatigue, depression, and surprisingly, trouble sleeping on their backs. He began to suspect a connection between breathing problems at night and their various health and wellness issues. He knew that, anatomy-wise, the human ability to speak is actually a liability when it comes to breathing efficiency-humans are the only animals that can choke and die. If his patients' night breathing was poor, not only were they not getting good sleep, it could be tipping the balance of their health, making them vulnerable to a host of illnesses and conditions. On the other hand, if they're experiencing health conditions or illnesses that obstruct nighttime breathing, that could be the beginning of a vicious cycle: health problem, poor breathing during sleep, more health problems. The breakthrough came when he began to treat the night breathing and sleep position parts of the equation. Lo and behold, his patients showed immediate and drastic improvement in their health complaints.Sleep, Interrupted takes you step-by-step through the widespread problems created by obstructed breathing at night. You'll be shocked to discover how many illnesses stem from this one problem, and relieved to find clear, concise, actionable information and support for you and your doctor to review. Packed with easy-to-follow research and practical suggestions for a wide array of health issues, this book may just hold the answer to the question of why you feel so lousy, and what you can do to start feeling better today. Dr. Steven Y. Park is an author and surgeon who helps people who are always sick or tired to once again reclaim their health and energy. For the past 10 years in private practice, he has helped thousands of men and women breathe better, sleep better, and live more fulfilling lives. His passion is to identify and empower people to overcome sleep-related breathing problems, which most people don't realize is the real reason for many of their common medical ailments. Dr. Park practices integrative medicine and surgery, with a firm belief that other models of health and disease can complement traditional, Western medicine. He provides monthly live tele-seminars with experts not only related to his field, but also professionals in other areas he has interviewed an acupuncturist, dietician, and a neuro-linguistic programming and hypnosis expert in the past. He firmly believes that one must treat the whole person first, including addressing his or her diet, lifestyle, stresses and emotional states, rather than focusing on one simple symptom or area of the body. A good start

I confess to being disappointed. I read the book after being diagnosed (and treated for) sleep apnea and I was looking for a deeper understanding of why I have it and what I can do to be less tired. The vast majority of the book seems devoted to trying to convince the reader that poor sleep can be a cause of just about every disease or problem a person can have. It's only at the very end of the book that any suggestions are made, and most of them struck me as either obvious (the standard litany of sleep hygiene suggestions such as go to bed at the same time every night), impractical (arrange your schedule so you can get a long sleep every night), or lacking detail.

However, if you feel unwell and unrested and you don't know why, then this book would be a good resource for you. It will help you make the connection between your rest and your other symptoms and might help you frame your problems in a way to present them to your doctor so he or she can order a sleep study.

If you're already aware that you have sleep issues and that they affect you and you want more information on how it all works, I recommend The Promise of Sleep instead

Great book by a wonderful physician

I am a registered dietitian and nutritionist in private practice in NYC. From the first time I met Dr. Park in his office, I absolutely fell in love with his thirst for knowledge and true devotion to medicine.

I absolutely agree with all the positive reviews written thus far. Dr. Park has a gift of explaining the most complicated concepts in simple, easy-to-understand terms. In a world with so much quackery and unreliable information, it is refreshing to read a book written by an educated and knowledgeable physician with numerous years of hands-on experience.

Throughout the pages of this book, Dr. Park questions the traditional models of health and provides ample practical advice that is realistic and doable.

A must read for all healthcare professionals, patients diagnosed with sleep apnea, and all those looking to learn more about the condition.
