Description

From the Inside Flap The small-block Chevrolet is easily the most popular V8 engine ever built. It was introduced in 1955, and remained in production until the mid-nineties, powering legendary cars such as the 55-57 Chevys, Camaros, Impalas, Novas, Chevelles and of course, the most popular sports car of all time, the Corvette. Of course, whether restoring or modifying one of these classics, there comes a time when your small-block Chevy needs rebuilding. In this newly updated edition, "Small-Block Chevrolet: Stock and High-Performance Rebuilds" is a step-by-step Workbench Book that shows you how to rebuild a stock or performance oriented small-block Chevy in your own garage. It includes more than 600 color photos and easy-to-read text that explains every procedure a professional builder uses to assemble an engine, from crankshaft to carburetor. Detailed sections show how to disassemble a used engine, inspect for signs of damage, select replacement parts, buy machine work, check critical component fit, and much more! Performance mods and upgrades are discussed along the way, so the book meets the needs of all enthusiasts, from restorers to hot rodders. "How to Rebuild the Small-Block Chevrolet" is a must-have for every small-block Chevy fan. For 50 years, the small-block Chevy has ruled the streets -- there are now millions of them out there, powering everything from classic muscle cars to drag boats, street rods to pickups. It’s simply the most popular engine ever built, for stock or racing use. Like any engine, though, almost every small-block Chevy will eventually need to be rebuilt, whether you’re restoring a vintage Corvette or building a pavement-ripping pro-touring Camaro. In this updated and revised version of a book that’s become the industry standard, the authors show you how to successfully rebuild your small-block Chevy. Using step-by-step photo sequences (more than 600 photos!) this book takes you through every step involved in rebuilding your small-block Chevy V-8: • Assessing the Engine • Engine Removal • Disassembly and Inspection • Machine Work • Trial Fitting Parts • Parts Cleaning • Final Assembly • First Firing and Break-In Along the way, the unique Workbench® format gives you helpful hints and tips on performance upgrades, including cams, heads, ignition, induction, and more. It also points out problem areas to watch for, professional builder tips, jobs that need special care or special tools, and more. Whether you’re a first-time engine builder or a seasoned professional, this is the essential guide to rebuilding your small-block Chevy.

Not as good as I had expected

I just wanted a book to reference various things like torque specs, etc. I thought this would be a great reference to have around.... I pretty much read the whole thing over and it's not nearly as thorough as I had hoped for the price. Another thing I do not like about it is how there is obviously some bias opinions about various products throughout the entire book. Complete sell out. That said, the pages are all glossy and are great for the garage since if/when they get oil/grease on them they clean up pretty well. Nothing in this book is definitive as it does not cover a wide enough range of possibilities. I also found that the information in this book is scattered all over and there is no index. Not a whole lot of thought went into this book. I would not buy it again.

First time engine pull and rebuild. This book helped a ton.

This book was really helpful. I used it when pulling out a blown 350 from my 77 Chevy k20. Lots of pictures with detailed information and helpful mechanic tips that save time and money. This book saved my bacon a couple of times and kept me from getting ahead of myself in tear down phase. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to work on an SBC for the first time.

Gets the job done!

I believe it’s a simple guide to follow when you are rebuilding a SBC. It does look like the authors put in plugs for different products but most of their recommendations are accurate for quality. I use their recommendations as only a guide and then make my own selections from there.

Not as informative as thought

This magazine was not as informative as I thought it would be. Need to find a book similar to Chiltons or Hayes I guess.
