Description

When Cigdem Knebel struggled to find high-interest/low-level decodable chapter books a dyslexic child could painlessly read, she began to write one herself for her 7-year-old son. Cigdem is the founder of Simple Words Books (SWB), which are high-interest /low-level decodable children's chapter books. Her mission is to improve fluency, comprehension, and most importantly, reading-confidence of children with dyslexia. She accomplishes this by using many carefully chosen decodable and frequently used words in her books with the skills of young dyslexics in mind. Cigdem believes that all children love to read. This is no different for children with dyslexia; they just need to find that right book for them. And Simple Words Books aspire to be those books.

Features & Highlights

  • It is Matt's tenth birthday and he gets a lousy old pen from his rich Grandma Deb. But Matt does not like to write. What was Grandma Deb thinking...The pen turns out to be magical and soon Matt will learn that he has to help an elf clan to defeat King Gris before he destroys the entire Elf Land. This version is printed with DYSLEXIE FONT. Simple Words Books help children with dyslexia to become better readers, without tears. Our decodable books support improving their reading fluency, comprehension and confidence. In our books, we use decodable, high frequency and basic sight words that early or struggling readers can easily decode. Our short sentences and paragraphs make it easier for our readers to flow through the chapters. Spelling Pen in Elf Land has 16 chapters and over 7000 words. The entire word list and word frequency are included in the book and on our website (simplewordsbooks.com). We recommend the use of this list as a tool to determine the reading level match and pre-practice with the reader to improve fluency. Great for dyslexic children

My 10 year old grandson is dyslexic and I bought for him. He says he likes it, easier to read than traditional books due to the layout. He wants the other books in the series, so I will be ordering .

Good for children that have trouble reading

I bought this book for my boyfriends son who has a problem reading. He was able to read this book much easier then any normal book from the library. I should mention he is 7 and in 2nd grade.

Perfect HiLo reader

This is an excellent confidence booster for reluctant readers. It held my son's interest, which is huge when trying to get them to read in general. He is already asking for the second book.

Like it very much

I got this for my grand niece who is, like me, dyslexic. I loved it and hope she will learn to love it too. Eight year old's usually don't like books for their Birthday but I'm an old school teacher who just can't resist.

It’s decode-able but… needs revision

The book is cute but the writing is stiff, and some of the vocab is obscure or needlessly challenging—for example it describes a character as having a “vast gut” which were unfamiliar words for my third-grade struggling readers.
Also, readers need to be ready for multi-syllabic words. I would say this is good for students who are a little older (maybe 5th-8th grade) and have had some dyslexia intervention.

First book my daughter actually finished!

My daughter really loved this book. She's in 3rd grade and hasn't been diagnosed with dyslexia but we are fairly certain she has it. This book was the first chapter book my daughter finished on her own. She loved the content and excitedly told me about it every morning. It didn't take her very long to read it either. The dyslexie font seemed to be super helpful for her! Highly recommend! About to purchase another book by this auther
