Description

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Peter, Gwen, and Miles are Spidey, Ghost-Spider, and Miles Morales, a trio of superheroes who team up when needed to help others and foil villains. Peter and Gwen are white; Miles is Afro-Latinx. As this is a tie-in comic to the cartoon series, certain elements are pre-established, such as a "webquarters" hideout and robotic helper Trace-E. Large panels, brief chapter lengths (ranging from two to eight pages apiece) and short, simple dialogue balloons are friendly to early readers. When villains do appear, the heroes leap into action to prevent or undo harm, not to fight. For example, Peter, Gwen, and Miles work as a team to stop Green Goblin from stealing parade balloons, eventually webbing him to a wall. Some Marvel cameos include Black Panther, Hulk, and Ms. Marvel, who help retrieve a lost cat and prevent Doc Ock from flooding a park. The book encourages parents to read along with their child, with notes about panel order, reading aloud, character introductions, and asking questions about the story. VERDICT Accessible layouts and guidance make this superhero digest for little ones a gentle introduction to superheroes and comics in general.—Thomas Maluck

Nerd uncle trying to indoctrinate nephew

I’m the only person in my nephews life that is willing to get him into nerd life. This is a good stepping stone to achieve that goal. It’s a set of short stories in comic form. Bright pictures and if your little one watches this show the gang is all there

Great first comic! A MUST buy for young Spidey fans.

This is a GREAT buy for kids ages 4-8 new to comics and/or any young child who likes the Spidey and his Amazing Friends show. This book is a great investment and very much worth the $5.99 price. The pages and color ink are a great quality with beautiful drawings and bold colors. The spine seems strong and durable- impressive for a book at this price point. I bought this for my 4 year old but my 6 year old loves it, too. Though it is not my favorite read, it lights their spark and they are excited, so I am excited. Here are our favorite things:
1) Last comic is a Super Hero Team-Up! and bring in Black Panther, Miss Marvel and Hulk. Throughout the book it focuses on the core team (Spidey, Spin and Ghost spider) solving problems and working as a team. The main bad guys are Doc Ock, Rhino and Green Goblin.
2) Best feature of the book (in my opinion) is the How to Read a Comic guide (page 6). It is a great short step-by-step tutorial to help parents discuss how to read comics to young readers. Very thoughtful design and a great tool to support the discussion.
3) Quality of Story - This book is meant to be a collection of short comics and stories. There is not an overarching storyline to tie each chapter together. Most of the comics are short (2-3 pages) and fun. Some of the chapters are better than others.
4) You open the book and find a “Message for Parents” section with suggestions on how to help support your young reader with reading comics.
5) Table of Contents - large font, titles of chapters alternate colors and labeled clearly with connecting word balloons - just like in the comics. Such a creative and clear presentation!
6) Meet the Characters page in beginning quickly sums up each character and shows the characters with and without costumes.
7) Vocabulary page at end of book for readers who might not know specific Spidey terms.

High Quality 1st Comic

This comic is really well done. It has a primer on how to read comics as well as an overview of the characters at the beginning. The stories are short so it does not overwhelm young readers. The artwork is fantastic; clean, clear professional drawings in the style of the show, without being simply lifted from the show. This product was definitely not phoned-in and does not feel like a rush job trying to capitalize on a hot show. The coloring is really well done too. The paperback format might not be the most robust but it will introduce young readers to real comics and how to take care of them I suppose. I'm very happy with the purchase.

Kinda weak. Wanted to love it.

The books for Spidey and Amazing friends are pretty cool, but these little comic stories are straight corn balls and too short. My daughter still enjoys it because of the topic and style, but you can tell she’s a bit underwhelmed by this. I’ll still pick up the next one, but I hope it’s better than this.

7 yr old really enjoys his first comic

My kiddo wanted a comic book, but he’s never read one before. This book has instructions on what order to read the pictures in, which was incredibly helpful. I absolutely recommend this and would buy it again

A worthwhile quick read!

My 6 year old came home from school asking me about comic books and where we could find one. This Spidey comic book was a huge hit for my beginner reader! He loved reading the plot and the illustrations.

A great beginning comic book

My granddaughter loved this comic book. It is a perfect beginners comic with short three to six page stories, all with a good message. The illustrations were vivid and the dialogue short.
My 4 year old was enthralled with it and once I had read it to here she “re-reads” it over and over telling herself the stories. I wish there were more comics like this for early readers.

Great for beginning readers!

my 6 year old can read this all on his own! Love how it has instructions on how to read comics/graphic novels. Super cute and fun! Relates to episodes of the show. Bought another one at a school bookfair and had to find more! Kiddo love this! A lot of images and little words makes it seem like a more achievable book to read for kids who do not like to read!
